Availability of Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019

Dear Microsoft!

On https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2019 you link the hyper v core server setup. However, it only leads to https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2018/11/13/update-on-windows-server-2019-availability/ and there is no download available.

When are you planning to make it available?

By the way: The download that was briefly online https://software-download.microsoft.com/download/pr/17763.1.180914-1434.rs5_release_SERVERHYPERCORE_OEM_X64FRE_EN-US.ISO is barely usable for 2 reasons:

A after installing it and activating Remote desktop, the server does not start to listen on port 3389. No RDP possible!

B Trying to do an in-place upgrade from Hyper-V Server 2016 leads to an error: "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during SET_Product_Key operation"

Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V "Phantom" VM, locked VMCX and VMRS files, "Virtual Machine Cache"

Hello!

I have a customer who is running Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V.  There is a folder which has <GUID>.vmcx and <GUID>.vmrs files which I can't delete because it's in use.  This GUID doesn't show up in "get-vm | ft -property vmid, vmname" so I know that it's not a GUID for a valid VM.  And while this GUID does show up in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines Cache" I can't delete it from there, either - it's in use.

So does anyone know how I can delete this "phantom" GUID VM so I can delete my folder which has the .vmcx and .vmrs files in it?  Especially if it doesn't involving taking Hyper-V Down?

Thanks!  Dave

How to connect a 2016 Hyper-V VM to multiple vLANs via a single physical NIC

$

A physical switch is configured with four tagged vLANs on a single port.

The single physical switch port is connected to a physical box with a single physical NIC.

The box is running Hyper-V Core 2016.

A single vSwitch (External) uses that single physical NIC.

A single VM running Server 2016 Standard is using that vSwitch.

I want that VM to be able to communicate with those 4 vLANs.

I've seen a thousand and one ways described but none exactly what I want.

A little help?

SR-IOV not working on Hyper-V server 2016

$

Hi,

I have a server running Hyper-V server 2016 and I am trying to use SR-IOV on an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS virtual machine. The hardware configuration is Dell R630 with Intel X710 network adapter. Please note that there is no issue with SR-IOV when running Ubuntu 18.04 / KVM on this server so I know that the issue does not come from the hardware.

Here is the issue: I configured SR-IOV on both the vSwitch connected to one port of the X710 board and one of the network adapters of my virtual machine. Network adapter status is the following in Hyper-V GUI: "OK (SR-IOV enabled)". However when I boot my virtual machine, I get the following error in Hyper-V server event viewer: "Failed to allocate virtual function for NIC 6CA4D1EF-E8B6-4FD1-8456-75B56950979C--F8CFAFF8-B7CA-4F40-895F-DDE0BB7EA8BF (Friendly Name: Network Adapter), status = {Drive Not Ready}. The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive %hs and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed.". And I get the following error message every 5 seconds in /var/log/kern.log on the virtual machine: "Feb 26 07:04:08 ubuntu-18 kernel: [ 1674.718553] i40evf 8b8c:00:02.0: Device is still in reset (-16), retrying
Feb 26 07:04:08 ubuntu-18 kernel: [ 1674.718556] i40evf 8b8c:00:02.0: Failed to communicate with PF; waiting before retry".

How can I fix it ?

Thanks for your help,

Pierre

Isolate Hyper-v guest for safe browsing

$

Hi,

I'm trying to create a safe browsing environment for all the online activity I'd like to isolate from my personal information and be safe from malware. As far as I know it's possible by using a hyper-v guest for browsing sites I don't want to be able to see my personal information. For example I use my physical computer (equipped with antivirus protection) for logging into my bank account and other official stuff. I don't want other sites like facebook, webshops or non-safe websites to track my personal data so I'd like to browse these sites in an isolated environment. I'm not looking for a way to hide from authorities. I don't even think it would be possible... So please, don't suggest Tor and other solutions like that. I'm just looking for a way to hide from those sites abusing my personal information by following me everywhere. Also it would be my first line of defense against malware activity when browsing/downloading stuff that's not entirely safe or testing/trying applications that are not yet proven to be safe. So my question is if you could give me a list of settings I should use in hyper-v to completely (or as much as possible) isolate my guest OS from the host so there'd be no information leaking.

NUMA SQL SERVER

Hello guys

I would definitely understand the subject WE NUMA in the configuration of a VM for SQL Server.

I currently have a Host with Windows Server 2016, dedicated as a Hyper-V Host with 64 GB Ram, 2-socket processor, 12-core processor and 24 logical processors.

I have already done several readings about NUMA Nodes configuration, and it seems to me that Windows Server does not know how to manage this, and that we must take care not to cross the limit of a node in one, so that it does not have to use external memory.

And there I have read many comments and magical formulas to be able to do accounts and decide this.

I honestly can not understand the account, I do not know if windows does not know how to manage it.

And in all the confusion in this matter I have made available a VM for SQL Server 2014, with 20 GB and 9 processors, because in the NUMA configuration it speaks up to 12 CPUs per node.

Sorry for the long post, but if anyone can explain this please and if my settings are correct

Thank you

Hyper-v & threadripper temp issues

I have a threadripper 1950x and had hyper-v installed to run a few vms but have run into an odd issue and am curious if anyone else has run into it as well, and if there is a fix.

So the issue is, when hyper-v is installed, my liquid cooler (kraken x62) cannot seem to read the temps properly from the cpu. My cam software should scale up fan speed and pump speed based on this reading, but it doesnt. When I uninstall hyper-v everything runs fine and scales as it should.

I also tried running the ryzen master utility while hyper-v was installed but it cannot run due to VBS and requests that you disable VBS before running it again.

If anyone has run into this and knows whether or not there is a solution please let me know as I would like to run a few vms but am currently worried about my processor overheating.

Hi!

I am having problems with activation of two virtual machines... virtual machines are installed from downloaded 2016 evaluation iso.

host server is 2019 stardard (activated)

I am getting 0xC004FD03 error.

I used AVMA key (for 2016 standard) C3RCX-M6NRP-6CXC9-TW2F2-4RHYD

I also tried this : https://victorhomocea.wordpress.com/2016/12/27/this-edition-cannot-be-upgraded-how-to-activate-windows-server-2016-evaluation/

any hints?

deleting checkpoints Hyper-v windows server 2016

$

to give a bit of background we have a 2016 server hosting a windows 2008 VM

Someone created a checkpoint or windows server backup did, not too sure as to the initial cause.

The hard drive started to fill up with .avhdx files.

due to limited space we moved 2 of the storage disks for the VM to another drive and manually merged the .vhdx files back to the parents.

they are all now merged back and vm working fine. however the checkpoint is still showing in the hyper-v management interface and subsequesnt backups have started to create avhdx files.

Now the question, should i run Get-VM -name | remove-vmsnapshot to remove the checkpoints or are there other options

thanks in advance

Cannot manage Hyper-V 2012 core from Windows 10 Enterprise.

Been stuck at the coal face trying to figure this one out for best part of 24 hours now.

I have a dell blade server, and 3 of the nodes on it are configured as Windows Hyper-V 2012 core servers, with a verity of VM's running on them.

A week ago, after a disk crash on my workstation, I had to re-install windows 10 enterprise.  As it was a re-install I patched it all the way up to 1809 (Prior to the crash I was at 1803).

After I reinstalled, I went to access the Hyper-V servers as I had done without problems previously, with both Windows 7 and W10-1803.

As expected, I got the various winRM trusted hosts errors, so I ran the required WinRM commands, made sure the firewall had the correct rules in place, etc etc...

However, I cannot in any way connect to my servers using Hyper-V.

On the advice of some other technet forums, and various MS-Connect posts and MSDN Blogs, I installed the "Windows Server Manager" on the windows 10 machine, and that also has problems accessing the Hyper-V servers.

Remote desktop connections work totally fine, I can RDP into the servers no problem.  All 3 servers have both an Administrator account on, and an account using my own Login Name that I log onto my Windows 10 PC with, which is also part of the administrators group on my machine, and on the 3 remotes.

All the machines are in a work group, rather than in a domain, but the work group settings appear fine too, as I can access the file shares and other resources perfectly fine, from my personal account, and logged in as "Administrator"

I've disabled the firewalls on the 3 Hyper-V servers and that's made no difference (Although not tried disabling the Win10 FW yet)

Corefig, which I have installed on each of the Hyper-V servers tells me that all the various rules are enabled, and that WinRM is correctly set up, I have the security level set to allow "All Clients", not just the newer more secure ones.

I cannot see anything that appears to be wrong.

The windows event logs don't give me any useful information, other than the updates I last tried to install failed (When in actual fact according to the screen I was looking at, said they had succeeded).

In Hyper-V manager, all I get is this:

Where "Lucinda" is the Windows 10 machine used for management, and "CB*" are the 3 hyper-v nodes.

In server manager, all I see is this:

I'm really out of options now.  It all worked perfectly previously, under 1803, but now it doesn't matter what I try I can't seem to get it to work.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts anyone has.

Cheers

Shawty

My Virtual Machie File server is very Slow when a Copie are file with storage in cluster Hyper V

Good afternoon!

, I made a Cluster with Hyper v - Failover Cluster, with two Nodes and 16 Roles and create the Storage with 3 disks (Qourum of 1GB, and two distributions of 5TB and another one of 4TB), and it works perfectly. one of the Roles in this case the virtual machine with the file server configured and allocated the 4TB Disk.

In this Cluster I have a Database Application running very well

To make the Cluster I am using two HP Prolaint DL360 G8 servers, each with 136GB Ram with 12 CPUs for each with 2.5 GHz,

When copied a file from Virtual machine (FServ) to the server in clustter it has good perfomence of transference 80MB / s or more.
The problem starts when I try to copy a file from my file server to my PC or make storage on it, it takes a speed of 300kbs / s

Requirements for using Hyper-V

Hello,

I'm new to Hyper-V. I have a .vhdx file which is pretty big 360 GB. I to run it as virtual machine. I tried to convert it to other virtual disk image formats in order to open it in other virtualisation tools, but I could not boot the vm from the converted image files. It seems that I could directly boot a vm from the .vhdx file. I tried few tutorials to boot enable Hyper-V on my machine but I cannot see Hyper-V Manager if look for it in start-up search. What are the requirements to run Hyper-V. I have Windows 10 64-bit Enterprise running on my laptop. Also is it possible to such a big image to .vdi or .vmdk formats?

Thanks.

apply vs revert

revert and delete checkpoint are absolutely clear...

basically I can quickly test if my thinking about APPLY is correct:

revert will bring a VM to the state after a checkpoint was taking, removing all changes made after.

I understand that Apply save(apply) any changes made after checkpoint creation and it will not be reversible.

Correct?

Then if Delete checkpoint will be made this checkpoint (with Apply) will be merged to VM.
