Problem with VM of Windows 10: Could not send keys to the virtual machine

$

After a windows update that is the problem.  I also have a network interface icon on the startup page with a red x thru it so I can't connect with RD either.  I tried command prompt doing a DISM and an SFC but to no avail.  Also tried removing the last update and that did no good either.  Looks like I will have to try and repair the integration services, which Hyper-V manager claims are up to do.  The OS is Windows 10.

Any suggestions?

Hi

I am having some issues and hitting break walls. I have a Server running Server 2016 and a VM created using Hyper-V.

I have create a VM running Server 2016, created the Virtual Switch (Internal), added the adaptor under settings and then on the Host Server, Shared the NIC to allow sharing with the vethernet virtual switch,

On the host i have manual set teh main NIC to 192.168.7.3 and the virtual switch to 192.168.7.5

On the VM I have set the NIC to 192.168.7.40

I cannot ping the VM from the Host and cannot ping the Host from the VM

All firewalls and Antivirus are disabled until i resolve this issue

I have tried a lot of solutions but nothing works.

Any help you can offer would be great.

Thanks

No Live Migration after KB4487026 (also not after removing it again)

Hi, we're running a 3-node Hyper-V cluster with Windows Server 2016 and a FibreChannel SAN. This morning I installed KB4487026 (and SSU KB4485447) on the first node.

After the first reboot, the server crashed with BSOD USER_MODE_HEALTH_MONITOR. After resetting it again, server booted fine, had new build installed (14393.2791), and seemed to work. However, it can no longer receive live migrations. All VMs failed their migration back. For each attempt, I get this event:

KB4487026 describes a known issue with SCVMM that seems related:

For hosts managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), SCVMM cannot enumerate and manage
logical switches deployed on the host after installing the update.

I cannot perform the suggested workaround (compile two MOF files) because these MOF files are specific to SCVMM and do not exist on our servers.

Still I concluded that the issue must be related to the update and uninstalled it. That did not help though - even after removing KB4487026, Live Migration is still not possible.

I quick-migrated some VMs to the node for now. Does anyone have the same issue, or an idea?

(Live migrations from the updated node to the other nodes or between the other nodes, as well as quick migrations between all nodes, are working fine.)

Connecting a VM to 2 seperate networks through 2 host adapters

Hello All,

I have a windows 2016 host running hyper-v. On the host i have 2 guest os also windows(2012). The host is connected to a corporate network and also a private network through 2 different NICs. I have created 2 vSwitchs Both external and each pointing at different network adapters.

The issue i have is that when both vSwitches are connected to the guest i can access the vm remotely on the corporate network. However i can't ping anything on the private network if i disable the adapter connecting to the corporate vSwitch then i can ping anything on the private network.

Networking is not my strong suit but i know enough to be dangerous so i appreciate any help i can get.

Thanks

Hyper-V Failed to Change State Error Code 32788

Hello Everyone,

So this issue I've searched long and wide for a resolution and it seems that there are many responses however no 100% fix.

I'm currently using Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, with 4 Windows 10 VM's attached through Hyper-V. Ultimately I would like to have 2 of the 4 VM's have the Virtual 3dFX add-in card enabled. Everything was working perfectly well when the system wasn't promoted to the domain controller. However, when the system is promoted, the 2 VM's that have the 3dfx add-in, when trying to boot them up, produce the error "Hyper-V Failed to Change State Error Code 32788".

I've tried: creating a brand new VM after the domain joins with all the basic settings and have narrowed it down to the fact that the VM will boot perfectly fine when the 3dfx card is removed. I've gone through the settings and there was nothing in an error state. I've tried putting the 3dfx settings to the lowest possible, however i dont feel with after joining the domain, that should have any issue.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue please?

Thank you in advance!

How to monitor performance for a specific VM in Hyper-V

$

Hi guys,

I have two Hyper-V hosts bundled in a failover cluster.

The storage for virtual machines files is a fiber channel SAN.

There is a tenant on that cluster that who complains about server performance.

I increased the amount of memory now I can see that memory demand (memory pressure) is lower than the assigned amount of RAM.

However, I'm still getting complaints from that tenants regarding performance.

Below are CPU and memory configurations.

Is it possible to monitor a specific VM?

Thank you.

Hyper-V more than 8 NIC for VM

Hello,

I have Hyper-V host machine connected to the switch with trunk port. There is VM with Windows Server 2012r2 and it's Domain Controller with DHCP and DNS role.

There are 12 VLANs in our company. I added 8 NICs to the VM and configured 8 vlans on them just by configuring ip for each NIC in WS 2012r2 and everything works as expected. Then I reached dead end and there is no way to add more NICs to the VM...

I tried to delete all unnecessary NICs and leave only one and change it to work as trunk with powershell command:

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -Trunk -AllowedVlanIdList 1-10 -NativeVlanId 100

but I don't know what to do after that - how to add virtual NICs inside VM to handle VLANs.

Also, there is no option to provide VLAN ID in device manager in VM. Probably Hyper-V NIC driver doesn't support it.

What I'm trying to do is to configure VM-DC to work as DHCP for 12 VLANs. I googled for 3 hours and I didn't find any solution for similar scenario, maybe my questions to google was bad ;) Can anyone be so kind and help me?

Thanks in advance!

Possible Use Specific DHCP Server for Hyper-V VMs Only Although On Common Subnet?

$

Hey Guys -

I'm trying to see if its possible to configure all Hyper-V VMs on a host to use DHCP from a DC (also a VM) and all external / non-VM devices use the router for DHCP.  Details are below...

I've got a home lab which includes a large variety of devices on a single subnet.  One of the systems is a Hyper-V server which includes a few VMs on their own domain for SCCM testing including its domain controller.  These VMs are also on the same subnet as all other devices.

The Issue / Why

Some of my testing requires imaging new VMs using SCCM's OSD where I boot a VM with blank HDD to media to start.  In order for domain joining and such to work correctly, this requires that the VM receive only the DNS address of the DC.  Therefore, I was hoping to find a way to get only the Hyper-V VMs to use DHCP from the DC VM and have all other (non-VM) devices use my router.

Below is what I've tried, considered, please a few other notes:

  • I realize that having the VMs on a separate subnet would simply this as I used to have it set up that way and had internet routed via the DC VM with 2 NICs.  However, I sometimes test hardware with SCCM and couldn't get it to talk to systems in the virtual subnet so had to go to everything on same subnet
  • Within the router's DHCP, I tried adding the DC's DNS IP to be assigned ahead of the router's DNS.  This applied correctly to the clients, but unfortunately still had the issue as I was only able to join the domain on the clients when the DC's DNS is the only IP listed
  • The router is a Linksys 1900ACS running the latest LEDE (OpenWRT)
  • The Hyper-V host is a Windows 10 1809 system and all server VMs are 2016
  • If possible to configure a Hyper-V switch for DHCP, yet not when hosted by Windows 10, does Windows Server has capability or will VMM be required?

Error trying to edit Virtual Disk

I am trying to convert a .vhdx file to .vhd, but whichever method i use (either Powershell or the Edit Disk option in Hyper-V) it fails with a generic error.

Through trial and error, I found it works if i OMIT the option to convert to "Fixed Disk" and leave it as a "Dynamically Expanding Disk". However I need to convert this VHD to Fixed Disk as it is required for Azure.

As the error is so generic, I can't determine what the problem is.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

TIA

Hyper-V host and disabling VMQ

Hi,

I have a hyper-V server with different VM’s on it.  After installing and configuring i keep having slow network traffic. In other words all works slow.

After searching the internet i have red that VMQ kan be parralizing for network traffic. Altough i have disabled all VMQ options on my networkadapters, i still have the issue.

So i started digging deeper.  I found a Powershell command to check if this is realy the case. Output is this :

Get-VMNetworkAdapter -ComputerName PROLIANTDL380 -VMname * | Select VMName, VMQweight

I have red that is should be 0 ,  i don’t know what 100 means ?

So the command to display the settings i did found (see above)

I can’t seem to find the powershell command to set VMQ to 0 (if this is needed ofcourse, and would have impact on my network traffic)

Thanks,

Extra info, these are my network adapters of my VM host :

Using Teamed NIC with Hyper V, and a WS2016 VM

$

I have a server running Hyper V 2016, which manages a WS2016 VM . The server has dual ethernet NIC's which I was looking at teaming up to improve ethernet performance on the vm. I followed the procedure in this article

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/networking/technologies/nic-teaming/create-a-new-nic-team-on-a-host-computer-or-vm

The procedure worked fine for Step 1, items 1-18.

In Step 2 where you set up the NIC team in Item 2, I see the two virtual switches setup in Step 1 (not the two ethernet nics) I try to add these to a team but I see an invalid parameter error.

I checked on this message, and this was caused by trying to team the ethernet adaptors which had already been associated with a virtual switch, which cannot be done.

This implies the procedure shown in the article is incorrect.

What is the correct way to set this up ?

Thanks

Tony

hyper-v guest iscsi

hi there i would like to connect iscsi volume to one of my guest vms

my question is about the networking.....

my iscsi is on vlan 10 and my normal vm traffic on vlan 1

i have dedicated iscsi nics on my hyper-v hosts (using 10 GIG)

my vm traffic is on 2 x 1 G NICs (teamed) . but only 1G.

Do i create a new virtual switch or just trunk the existing virtual switch even tho its 1G ?

I don't see anyway to create a new virtual switch and utilize my 10G iscsi interfaces
