Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server

$

Dear Experts...

Greetings !!!

1. Issue Description:
Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server – Shows connecting to Virtual Machine Manager Service state and did not connect. Hyper-V Host shows Host Not Responding in the SCVMM console
Due to which VDIs were not launching to newly connecting users as just disappearing

2. Temporary Fix:
If we restart the server, the issue will be resolved but the current active users gets impacted.
Need to power on all the VDIs and ensured all got registered state
And also the same issue keep on re-occurring frequently and affecting production users

3. Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
We tried to restart the service SCVMM and WS-Remote Management service which got restarted. But still the issue persists.
When we restart the WMI Service, one of its dependent service Hyper-V Virtual Machine Manager (vmms.exe) goes to stopping state and neither stopped nor restarted.
Tried to kill the vmms.exe process from task manager and via command prompt using the commands but it never destroyed.
It says cannot stop the Virtual machine manager service, already another running instance exists, access denied (when kills process from task manager), etc.
Until the server reboot the issue will not be resolved.

Thanks in Advance ...

Hyper-V clear as mud

Can someone please provide some clarity about Hyper-V:

1) Hyper-V server does it come with a GUI?

2) Is it basically server 2019 with Hyper-V role installed?

3) or is it core only and if you install 2019 e.g. core then you have install the Hyper-V role via Powershell? then how do you administer it? RDP, Hyper-V manager on remote machine or???

Thanks.

Hyper-V Could not retrieve replication health data

I have the following problem.

Did Windows Patching on all nodes on my Cluster this Weekend.

12 VM's reports replication health Warning on the Primary Server.

When trying to view replication health - it states could not retrieve replication health data.

When looking on the Replica Server all is normal and replication succeeds.

All Servers are running latest integration tools.

I removed replication , and replicas, redone replication then it appears after some time same issue happens.

PLEASE ASSIT ME

Hyper-V replication and resynchronization failures

$

Hi,

We user Windows Hyper-V Replication for a particular VM which has been failing since the end of last year and not been noticed!  The replication health is critical and the only option available was to resynchronize.  I have tested the connection and firewall rules and ensured that the two Hyper-V hosts can connect to each other on the appropriate ports, and then last night I started a manual resync from the primary VM (the only option available).

This has run throughout the night and produced numerous incidences of event ids 32315 and 32088 in the Hyper-V-VMMS event log.  There was no apparent replication activity on the host or replica server (using netstat to see what remote addresses had connections established on port 80), so I cancelled the resynchronization this morning (the VM's VHD is 40Gb in size).  On cancellation, the AVHD file on the Primary host cleared, as did the checkpoint in Hyper-V Manager, but it hasn't cleared on the Replica host, and there is still a replica checkpoint in Hyper-V Manager (the remaining avhd file is 352Kb).

There is also a 1Mb .hrl file left on the primary server as well and a 40Mb hru file on the replica server.

The only replication option still available is to resynchronize, but I don't want the possibility of another checkpoint getting created and stuck on the replica or primary server and making the situation worse.  I also have limited reboot options as we are required to give notice to reboot the VM and it is in production.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I look at removing and recreating replication for the VM?

Thanks

Hyper-V 10G connections and File Transfer speed

Hello,

for the past two weeks, I've been bashing my skull around configuring a working SET with a HyperV cluster, to no avail.

The systems are two Lenovo SR530 with 2x10G Intel x722 NICs, hosts are running 2016, guests are Windows 10 1809.

The NICs FW and all other firmware is fully updated. The drivers are installed through Lenovo XClarity Essentials UpdateExpress and there are no more driver updates available.

There is no antivirus or firewall on neither the hosts, nor the VMs.

After some pain, I decided to go to the sheer basics and configure:

  • Initial test with no vSwitch, just two NICs and a direct speed test and then everything below
  • iPerf host-to-host with no vSwitch configured, just a direct 10G link
  • iPerf tests at 9.5 Gbps (great, so the NICs are working at 10G-ish)
  • Copying files between hosts works at ~700 MB/s

Subsequent tests with a vSwitch (configuration):

  • A single 10G network adapter on each host (all other NICs disabled)
  • A single vSwitch on each host created through HyperV Manager with SR-IOV enabled, AllowManagementOS is Enabled.
  • All VM interfaces are with default settings, meaning VMQ and SR-IOV are enabled
  • A single VM on each host

The tests:

  • iPerf host-to-host with a vSwitch enabled, 10 streams (-P10 switch)
  • Copy a 4,5 GB ISO file host-to-host
  • iPerf guest-to-guest with a vSwitch, 10 streams (-P10 switch)
  • Copy a 4,5 GB ISO file guest-to-guest

The results are:

  • 4.5 Gbps (OK, I guess it's VMQ doing something)
  • 260 MB/s stable transfer (not ideal, but OK)
  • 4.5 Gbps (OK, seems stable)
  • 10-60 MB/s unstable transfer (What-the-heck?!)

When I transfer all of this workload on the 1G NICs, eveything is working full-speed.

Additionally, when I transfer the same file from a VM on a 3rd host, which only has 1G network, to my VM which has 10G, everything is stable at 1G (line speed of the sender station).

That brings me to the conclusion that there is something very wrong with my 10G cards when they communicate with each other, but that's as far as I can go, because I have no other machines to test 10G externally.

Bottom line - as soon as a vSwitch comes into play, the guest-to-guest file transfer speed drops to 0.3 Gbps.

So, please, any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong or am missing would be highly valued.

EDIT for completeness: I have already tried disabling VMQ on the phy and virtual network adapters. That did not help the low bandwidth when copying guest-to-guest.

How to boot vm in order to reset Administrator password

Hello guys,

I want to reset Administrator password. I tried to boot, but I even couldn't boot.

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 I have a VM Generation 2.   I set "Boot from DVD Drive" in Firmware category in Hyper V setting and tried to uncheck Enable Secure Boot, but the Windows Setup menu didn't show up.

I referred to the following sites:(Sorry I cannot contain any links...)

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

Resetting Administrator Password in Windows 2012

Actually, I tried similar things by making a similar situation in my windows10 at home and I could boot and reset a password, so I don't know what I'm missing for the windows10 in the office.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Hello all,
I have a windows 2012 R2 server running Hyper-V

My VM on this server is Windows 2016 running Exchange Server 2016.

On the VM, I installed Windows Server Backup and I have it backing up the data stores daily.

On the Host machine (Windows 2012), I have just installed WSB.
How should I go about backing up my Win2016/Exchange Server VM?

Event ID 32000 after drive failed on replication server

$

I had a server that received hyper-v replicas but we had a drive failure. I replaced the drive and tried to re enable replication but it keeps failing. I then removed replication from the host and then when I tried to re enable it I get an error that is Event ID 32000.

It says Enabling replication failed Hyper-v failed to enable replication for the virtual machine "x" Cannot create a file when that file already exist.

It does create a folder in the server that will receive the VM but it's empty. I'm not sure what to do here.

Thank you for your help.

Can you store an deleted VM in hyperv if you have a snap?

We have a hyper-v server and am wondering if the VM is deleted accidentally if a snap made before the deletion will it restore the VM ?

.VMCX files grow in size and prevent Live Migration working (Server 2016)

$

We have an issue whereby the .VMCX files for our production VMs have steadily grown in size (from a start point of less than 100KB up to 20MBcurrently!).

This is preventing Live Migration from functioning, and also introducing long delays when attempting to edit the virtual machines.

I have spoken with someone else who has had the same issue, and they tracked it down to being related to having the machines checkpointed regularly - each time the VM is checkpointed the .VMCX file grows a little larger (and doesn't shrink when the check point is removed).

Is there a way to "repair" the .VMCX file?

All VMs are Server 2016, running on a Server 2016 Storage Spaces Direct cluster.

tempory copy VM files, reconfig RAID, and put back the VM files

Hi,

I tought i had a simple question, but the internet is not quiet clear about this.

Since i have perfomance issues i want to reconfigure a logical drive (where my VM's are stored).  The drive where my VM's are stored is a RAID6 drive. Apparantly this is not fast enough for an SQL applcation.  So i want to Reconfigure/Rebuild that drive.

Plan of attack :

Since this is a small copmany i can do a full stop. My way of work would be. Shutdown all VM's. Copy everything that is on my D;\ drive to an external device. Start Smart Storage Administrator. Delete the second logical drive. Make a new logical RAID1+0 drive. Copy everything back from my extranl device to my new drive. And startup my VM's

Question :

Will this work ? Is this "best-practice" ? And will my VM's start with no problem ?
