Hi,

Short version: Hyper-V role installed on Windows 2019 with gen2 Win 2019 VM. File share created on that Win 2019 VM. File open (200Mb) or copy from share with Win 10 client machine is realy slow.

Please check detailed issue description: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3248a691-d32f-4ac6-9175-94524afc35ba/windows-server-2019-hyperv-guest-on-windows-server-2019-hyperv-host-networking-performance-error?forum=servervirtualization .

I guess we have posted it on the wrong place..

Setting network configuration on Hyper-V Linux Guest VM using WMI - SetGuestNetworkAdapterConfiguration

$

Hi,

I am trying to set network configuration like IP address, DNS, Gateway, address policy (dhcp/static), etc. on the Hyper-V Linux guest VMs using SetGuestNetworkAdapterConfiguration API in WMI through powershell. I need some information on this API.

1. Sometimes, the call is returning asynchronously and sometimes the operation is done synchronously. Why is this happening when the parameters are the same?

2. When call is returning asynchronously, when retrieving the job object from the return variable is resulting in following error:

$ret = $Service.SetGuestNetworkAdapterConfiguration($vm, $networkSettings[0].GetText(1))

$jobInstance = [WMI]$ret.job

Cannot convert value "\\HYPER-VHOST6\root\virtualization\v2:Msvm_ConcreteJob.InstanceID="8273DB55-AF16-4264-912C-FBF321AA1664"" to type "System.Management.ManagementObject". Error: "The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)"

Am I missing something here?

3. Is there any limitation using this WMI API for setting network configuration on Linux guest VMs, since I am running into these issue intermittently in Linux VMs?

I would appreciate any pointers for these queries.

Thanks,

Priya

VM Multiple Checkpoints Created with no Corresponding avhdx files

Dear All,

Thank you in advance if are able to help me solve a problem.

I am a total newbee regarding VMs but I am stuck to solve this.

We have a physical machine Windows Server 2016 based which host 2 VMs and 1 is no longer working properly.

After a lack of disk space a local back-up crashed.

Hyper-V apparently have created multiple check-points.

The treeview of my VM shows, 2 Levels with Blue Icon and 4 subsequent non-blue, sorry for the non technical description ;-)

I have only 3 files, 1 .vhdx and 2 .avhdx.

I can set the VM to point to my vhdx file and the inspection goes well.

I have reconnected the avhdx from earliest to latest using both Hyper-V Manager and PowerShell (ignoring Id Mismatch).

Get-VHD command says correct parent-child relationships but says files are not attached.

I can start the VM but it is in initial state without data contained in the checkpoints.

I have tried to delete some checkpoints but with no success.

It's been 2 days and I am running out of ideas, any help would really be much much appreciated.

Warm regards,

Thomas

Hyper-V VLAN on External Nic

Hello

I have Hyper-V 2016 installed with PFSense and I created a LAN with 192.168.1.1 range and a VLAn with 192.168.20.1 range and tag of 30. Both of the ranges have DHCP enabled. I'm also have a un-managed switch installed on the LAN port with a Unify AP router. Any device connected to the switch is able to get an IP address from the 192.168.1.1 however when I trunk the LAN adapter using "-VMNetworkAdapterVlan" I'm not able to get an ip address from both 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.20.1. I'm I able to use a standard LAN and VLAN on the same NIC adpater?

Thanks for the help in advance

DFS and resilient FS options

$

Morning

I have a 4 node Server 2016 Hyper-v cluster running on a Dell VRTX (Built in shared storage), this provides a number of VM's including a few File servers.

We use DFS namespace for most of the file servers, simply to make it easier as servers get changed, upgraded, renamed etc.

Lets take the example of FS1 (File server1), it has a DFS namespace with a number of folders/shares under it.

I want a solution to have a FS2 that also shares the same DFS name space, so that we can do maintenance on FS1 while users continue to work. Then maintenance on FS2 while FS1 is back up.

What options are available with our Hyper-v Cluster to achieve this?

One of the other File servers is simply for users H: drives, a share for each user exists, for example \\FS3\fred$.

What options do we have for a 2nd server for this, to allow the same kind of maintenance?

This cluster all exists on one site, in one rack.

Thanks in advance for suggestions and ideas :)

Virtual Machine stuck in Stopping state

I have a single virtual machine running on my Windows Server 2012 Standard Hyper-V host. Occasionally my VM goes offline (as far as my remote monitoring agent is concerned) and when I check the VM status in Hyper-V Manager the VM shows as Stopping. The vmwp.exe process is still running and cannot be terminated. My only option seems to be to reboot the server.

The server went offline at 10:09AM today and I checked System and Application logs for an explanation but found nothing however in the Hyper-V-VMMS Admin log I found this error at 8:29AM today:

Date:          20/02/2019 08:29:04
Event ID:      14100
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      server.domain.local
Description:
Shut down physical computer. Stopping/saving all virtual machines...

I am not sure if this is relevant.

Is it possible to identify why the VM is stopping?

Thanks

Hello,

Need a bit of help. Can someone tell me if  Microsoft Server 2019 Essentials comes with licencing for Hyper-V so you can have a physical instance of Windows Server 2019 Essentials installed with the same copy of Windows Server 2019 Essentials running as a VM?

Basically I have one physical server but wanted to be sure that if I buy Essentials 2019 it can be used as a host and a VM

Many thanks

Hi,

Was wondering if anybody else is having this issue..  I'm on Windows 10 RS5 (1809) and I'm unable to create a new VM and power it up..  It is coming up with the following error:

I came across this issue when trying to get Docker For Windows installed..  So went back to basics and tried to create a basic VM..

I've tried disabling the Hyper-V :

Rebooted and then re-enabling it:

Rebooted, same issue :(

So was wondering if anybody else has had this issue and resolved it?

Thanks

Which Physical NIC is my VM Guest using?

Hello everyone....

Our Host machine has 4 physical NICs which are teamed into a single logical switch.  (Setting is currently Switch Independent / Hyper-V Port)

When the VM is turned on, I would like to know which of four physical NICs it is using in the team.  I am hoping there is a nice PowerShell command for this, but I haven't been able to find any.

...Or perhaps there are some network teaming command that would tell me what IP addresses are currently being used by each of the physical NICs in the team? I simple "ipconfig" will only show me the host IP address.

Thanks!

Dynamic Memory - Over Allocation

$

I have an environment where hosts have 256Gb RAM and VMs are allocated a dynamic memory maximum of 1Tb as a default (Startup =4Gb and Min = 512Mb).

I have read a number of posts and articles that state you should not over allocate dynamic memory (which makes sense) but they are all for 2008R2 (some 2012R2). I am trying to find guidance/evidence that the current default is not best practice and find documentation on how dynamic memory in 2016 should be configured.

Is anyone aware of any good sites, documents, deep dives, etc that can help me draw up guidance for a build guide?

Clearing the list of Network Adapter maintained by the guest OS

$

If you remove the Nework Adapter from a VM and later add one, the Name and Device Name properties get incremented with a numeric suffix. If the removed Adapter had a static IP assigned to it, and if you try to assign the same IP to the newly added adapter, you'll be prompted with a notice/warning.

Same thing happens if you use a VHD with more than one VM - with each VM results a numeric increment in the name and a prompt if you try to assign a static IP which was used by any previous VM that used the VHD.

So, the guest OS is keeping a list of Network Adapters it ever used. Is there any way I can clear this list?

CPU-Usage

Hello,

yesterday i wanted to understand CPU-Usage-Display from VM's and Hypervisor-Hosts and i red a lot of regarding stuff.

First question:

A lot of posts say, that the display in the taskmanager does only show the usage of the host-OS vCPU, but not of the physical. While i checked the CPU-Usage, i got another picture! The Taskmanager of the HyperV-Host seems to show the exactly same values as here the "logical CPU of hypervisor" (i am not sure if microsoft made a mistake in the translation, was hard to find the counter because it's listed under L what i didnt expect), that you can see here with the fat red line.

So i am wandering if microsoft changed the behavier of the taskmanager in Server2016 (what is the System i made this tests on), or if i misunderstood something!

while i recorded this graphs, i started CPU-Burn.

within the first peak of 100% CPU-Usage, i ran CPU-Burn on the Hyper-V-Host, so the blue line goes to 100% and the fat red one aswell. okay, this seems to be logical.

within the second peak of 100% CPU-Usage, i ran CPU-Born on one of the HyperV-VMs, that has assigned 11 vCPU's (while the system has 12 logical cores), so it is limited to 95% what we can see within the fat line.

what i dont understand is: what does the thin red line shows? if it is the sum of all virtual cpu's it should show aswell almost 95% CPU-usage, but it just shows something like 35% which makes no sense at all to me. can somebody explain that?

last but not least, the HyperV-Manager has also a CPU-Usage display, which does not correspondent to the CPU-Usage-display inside the taskmanager of the VM, and also does not correspondent to the relative ammount of usage of the physical CPU - as far as i understand everything right and as far as i found the right counter to display the usage of the physical CPU.

i hope, someon can bring light into the dark!

VHD Set file format

Hello there,

We (Systola GmbH) provide vhdxtool utility which enables fast creation of VHDX files.

Recently a customer asked us to implement VHD Set files support. So I'm looking for the VHD Set file format specification. But it does not seem to be available unlike VHD/VHDX file format specifications which Microsoft published years ago.

I would like to know if HyperV involved Microsoft employees reading this group can help obtaining the VHD Set specification. Or maybe confirm that absence of the spec is intentional and it's not going to be published.

Best regards,

Hyper-v Network Internal

$

Hello

In defining an Internal Network in Hyper-V, it says that the VM can communicate with other VMs and with the Physical Host.

However in the tests I did the VM can not ping the Physical Host, it only can ping if I change to External Network.

The definition also says that a VM configured with External network can not access the physical network.

Now the Host to be accessed in the physical network, as would the VM access configured with Internal Network, to the physical host, if I can not ping the physical host?

The firewall was disabled in both directions for testing and even then I can not ping the physical host, the VM being configured with Internal Network.

I also put the VM in the same physical host subnet

I wonder if I'm getting it wrong or is this normal?

Understanding resilient options for File Server in cluster

$

So I have an established Server 2016 Hyper-V Cluster, running a variety of Windows server VM's.

If I take an existing File Server VM, it can run on any one of the 4 nodes and can be live migrated around easily. (I mean general purpose file server for users documents)

What options/solutions are there to both increase resilience and ease maintenance tasks for file servers?

We already use DFS-N so the FS would be accessed from \\DOMAIN\Share\ by the users, but only the FS VM itself is contained in the DFS-N root/config. (This was simply done after I got fed up with UNC paths changing every time I replaced a physical FS, way back when!)

I have done various reading online and I feel I'm missing a concept or a solution here.

What I really want, is a 2nd FS VM, that accesses the same Data drive that's being shared by the first VM, that can be added as a 2nd server in the DFS-N config, so that if one FS VM is offline for maintenance (for example) Staff can still access their data on the \\DOMAIN\Share. It would make it easier for me to do maintenance during the day with a 2nd, or even 3rd VM running.

Maintenance on the Hyper-V Custer Nodes is easy during the day, I just live migrate running VM's to another node and carry on with the work.

I have read up on host-clusters, shared VHDX files but I am still confused as to how to achieve my goal.

If it makes any difference, this is all running on a Dell VRTX server, which has 4 server blades and built in local storage thats made available to all 4 blades via MPIO.
