Hi friend
it's about 6 months which i am struggling with this issue in hyper-v 2012 R2.
we have a domain network and for employees i have created domain user accounts & are member of "Domainemployees" group.
we have a 2012 R2 hyper-v Host (joined to domain) & have created VMs for each employee on it.
using vmconnect.exe, i have created a shortcut to their VMs & this shortcut is located in theirHome folder which is mapped in their my computer window as a network drive.
i have performed all required steps which is mentioned here Here (John Howard blog) & here part2
but unfortunately, unlike hyper-v 2008R2, there Authorization manager doesn't work & seems they are ignored in windows server 2012R2. so although i have assigned required access to"Domain employees" group, when they double click on their VM shortcut (vmconnect) to connect to their VM's window, that they encounter this error:
"You do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer"
so the only workaround is to add our users into"Hyper-v Administrators" group in hyper-v Host LSD.
the downside of this is that users can manipulate their VM settings & configurations which is definitely undesirable ( for example they can change memory, processor, add disks,....)
i have seen many people has this problem & has posed their scenario in forums.
any finally what's the solution?
note that for some reasons, we can't migrate to VMM or System centers & .... we want to handle scenario without deploying System centers & VMM.
if really there is no other solution, i will add them to "Hyper-V Administrators" group, but know is there any trick to deny them from changing VM settings (although they are member of this group?! )
i tried to add them in VM's xml configuration files security tab & assign them deny permission, but no effect & they are still able to change vm settings.
you won't believe that because of the above issue, we have downgraded our server to windows 2008 R2 (which authorization manager works), but we have lost lots of benefits of new features of hyper-v 2012 R2 ) :-(
special thanks to whom help me from hell !
i use windows 2012 R2
and enable Hyper-V Role
and i want how to calculate vCPU formula ?

I have found that the latest version of the Dell MD Storage has ODX on by default. When using the storage migration with this turned on the VHDX files transfer instantly between the LUN's but the VHDX is corrupt and causes the Virtual Server to blue screen and then to never boot again. I have yet to find a way to recover any data.
My current work around is to disable ODX on the array itself which means that the data is transferred by the hosts, but does not corrupt the VHDX files.
show storageArray odxsetting;
set storageArray odxEnabled=false;
I have a couple of VMs that lose network connectivity periodically. I can ping a problem VM and about 50% of the time it will not reply back. All the VMs are on the same subnet as my workstation. All the drivers have been updated on the hosts. I have other VMs that are attached to the same virtual switch and they don't have an issue. I have created a virtual switch from a nic that is not being used by anything else and still have the same results.
Any ideas.
Hi,
Ive been running my lab on 2 hosts with local storage (2012 R2). Recently ive purchased an additional server and setup an SMB 3 (Server 2012 R2) share for my VMs.
I switch my hosts and SMB Server off at night (as its only a lab). When I boot the next morning, I cannot connect to anything and my VMs are in a "saved-critical" state. The only way I can get things moving again is to
1. Delete my DC
2. Copy the files to a local drive
3. import the VM back into the host
4. Migrate the storage back to the SMB 3 share
The above works but is a bit of a pain. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I can do? Im guessing im in a bit of a chicken and egg situation as I must need the DC to validate the permissions for the share?
Hi,
What is the best practice for formatting CSV LUN for hosting Exchange/SQL Server VM?
Can the CSV be formatting with 64K allocation size unit and VM OS VHD with 4K, SQL/Exchange Data VHD with 64K?

Dear Sir,
I am running DC on Windows 2008 R2 Rack Server. Now I have one Desktop server (Windows 2008 R2) and configured Hyper-V on the same. Can I configure ADC on the Hyper-V.
Thanks

Good Morning everyone,
I have a Lab environnement in my Physical Computer win 8.1 that has Hyper-V on it.
Inside Hyper-V I have a win server 2012 R2 that is a DC, I also have a VM win win XP that Im trying to configure a VLAN on it and the point is that DC should server clients IP based on wich vSwitch they are connected.
I have no psysical switch layer 2, but my NIC supports VLN tagging also my router.
In the DC I ran a cmdlet on Powershell to trunk the virtual switch, it is DC01 - Network Adapter - Trunk - 0, 1-10
and the VM is also in Trunk, WINXP - Network Adapter - Trunk - 2,0
DC and VM are connected to the external virtual switch because I would like to have Internet on VM WINXP.
On the DC everything is ok, I have Internet Connection and I can ping the VM, but on the VM I can ping the DC but I havent Internet Connection, because I cant ping the Default Gateway.
Anyone could help me ? or give me some advices ?
Thank you very much
Hi everyone,
I deployed 2 hyper v vitual machines a while ago, and i did that because I needed to test my current game Project, which is an
online game. However, i've had some problems with my Windows installation then I had to reset the pc by making it a refresh
install. I still have the hyper v virtual disks, but i cannot attach it to a new hyper-v virtual machine. it pops up this message:
"the storage
where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual disk sharing". I dont know anything about virtual machines, so I
didnt know I had to make the disk sharable. How can I force to attach the hard disk to a new hyper-v? I dont want to go t
hrough the whole proccess of installing the operating system all over again and updating it....
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Romulo Romero
We have a server 2012 standard hosting 2 Hyper-V machines, one is our Exchange and the other our App server.
We had a power outage last night and it looks that the host shut down cleanly but the VM's did not.I checked the event logs and the VM's are showing an unexpected shut down exactly the same time as the Host server. The host server event logs is showing "Event
6006" which to me is a clean shutdown.
Hyper-V Guest Shutdown Service is running on both VM's. On the Host that service was set to "Manual (Trigger Start)". I'm not sure what that means but I changed it to "Automatic (Trigger Start)"
Also, I tried to start HV Guest Shutdown Service on the host server but it just starts and stops. Is that because the startup type is set to "Trigger start"?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi everybody,
Got a fun one, kinda. So started to upgrade from hyper-v 2012 core 2012 to R2. Migrated the VMs. Formatted the system drive. Reinstalled from scratch. Added to the domain. Rebooted.
I could remote desktop, connect with Hyper-V manager.
Connected back to the hyper-v 2012 R2 core with RD, installed iSCSI and set the target, installed and configured MPIO. Rebooted.
And I lost access from every where to the Hyper-V Core. The only way I can access them is via remote powershell sessions. Server manager does not work, I can't ping anymore, can't RD to them, can't SNMP either. They are in the same OU as the other servers still running 2012 normal.
Any idea why, after the second reboot most access went down the drain ?
I feel like the system thinks it is not on a domain network anymore and thus the firewall started. But even stopping the firewall did not help for one of the 2 servers. And I d rather not disable the FW anyway. I also tried hvremote, no luck.
Regards,
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help. In my lab environment I run 2 Hyper V hosts with a 3rd server on SMB (All server 2012 R2). All VMs use the share on the Windows Server 2012 R2 SMB Server. I can move Windows VMs from one host to another with no issues. When I try to move my Vyatta Virtual Router ( a linux box), the move fails with a message about the process failing on the destination host.
Any ideas as to why I can move Windows boxes but not linux? or is it the fact this box is doing all my routing for my VMs (and also host access). I tried this with clustering but I get an issue with the cluster manager being unable to connect to a DC (presumably because the Vyatta router is down as the hosts authenticate with DCs on a separate subnet which is routed via the vyatta).
Any help, as always, appreciated.
Hi folks,
I have an environment that is Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V (some 20 VMs), it is standalone server. I want to migrate to Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V.
What is the easiest way?
Can I update using same hardware? (NO NEW HW)
I will lose something during migration?
Thank you,
Hi,
Since when do the VMs change MAC at each reboot ? I just upgraded to 2012 R2 and now I am literally screwed. I can't reboot a server without having to update the whole DHCP configuration or manually set the mac address of the network adapters on the servers. which means I have to keep a MAC database now.
Regards,
Hi,
Running Server 2012 R2
I have a requirement to convert a vhdx to vhd. I used the builtin feature in the hyperv manager to convert the vhdx (Fixed) disk to a vhd (fixed).
When i create a new server an attach this vhd disk, i get an error when the vm boots. It briefly displays the windows logo, then gives an error: boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device. This occurs whether i attach the disk as ide or scsi.
Why would the converted drive no longer be bootable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi all,
I have a customer that need Hyper-V cluster nodes network subnet on a VLAN\subnet different than the guest VMs to be hosted on the Hype-V cluster (hosts in a subnet and guests on different subnet). Is this possible? Is it only about doing network routing on the router\L3 switch?
I need to programatically determine how much memory a Hyper-V guest with dynamic memory is using, from within the guest running Windows Server 2008 R2, without access to the host.
The total amount the guest thinks it is using is, of course, easy to get. But most of that is driver locked memory created by the memory balloon, not memory actually in use by the guest. I have not been able to find a way to query the current size of the memory balloon.
You can see the size of the driver locked memory using Sysinternals RAMMap.exe, but I need a way to get that value in PowerShell.
Any ideas?
Thanks
