Network Issues on Hyper-V

I am building an MCSA lab in Hyper-V on my Windows 8.1 PC.  I have 2 physical NICs on the PC with 1 NIC for Hyper-V and the other for the host PC LAN/Internet traffic.  Physical network is 192.168.0.0 with gateway 0.254.  Two virtual NICs were created on my host PC with the v-switches and I renamed them to "vEthernet (LAN 10)" and "vEthernet (LAN 20)".

In Hyper-V I have an external v-switch ("Hyper-V External") connected to the dedicated Hyper-V NIC and two internal v-switches ("LAN 10" and "LAN 20"), all are being used with a virtual VyOS router for 2 separate LANs and a route to the physical network.  This all works as desired:

On LAN 10 I have a domain controller ("DC1") at 10.100 that is running DNS and DHCP.  When I enabled DHCP, "vEthernet (LAN10)" on my host PC pulled DHCP with a 10.254 gateway and a 10.100 DNS as I would expect but I noticed that when I shutdown DC1 I could no longer get to the Internet on my host until I disabled "LAN 10".

Doing a tracert from my host I found that traffic is being routed to the "LAN 10" gateway on the VyOS router first (10.254) and then to the physical router (0.254) and route print shows a route with gateway 10.254 with a metric of only 5 so that all traffic from my host is being routed through the virtual "LAN 10" interface rather than the physical "Ethernet" interface.  I can delete the route to 10.254 and my first hop then becomes the physical router at 0.254 but if I disable and re-enable "LAN 10" the route to 10.254 with metric 5 comes back.  Additionally, nslookup on my host defaults to 10.100 ("DC1").  If I disable "LAN 10" it will then default back to the DNS I statically assigned to my "Ethernet" NIC.

For now I'm just leaving the "LAN 10" interface disabled which doesn't affect VM network communication at all, it just keeps LAN 10 off my physical PC.  I couldn't ping or RDP into VMs on that network from my host until I added a static route on my physical router to the VyOS router.  This works but I don't get DNS resolution from anything on that network.

Should I just leave LAN 10 disabled or is there something I've overlooked that I need to (re)configure?  I tried to change the metric of the default route to 0.254 from "266" to "4" but it will not go lower than 14.  I would also like to know why it behaves this way - why are the virtual NIC settings given priority over the physical NIC settings?  Is a NIC pointing to a domain given precedence over a NIC on a workgroup?

Thanks!

Guest OS Best Practices

Have some VMware experience but new to Hyper V. Have a new Server 2012 R2 server and enabled the Hyper V Role so I can have a test platform to learn Hyper V on. Have a question about Best Practices for installing Guest OS due to conflicting information on docs I have researched.

Doc I read says that it is best to choose option to install OS later when creating the VM and also to use fixed VHDX files. Choosing to install OS later during VM creation results in a dynamic VHDX, a SCSI Controller, and an OS Not Found error upon initial boot. Have figured out how to get VM to look to ISO image during boot and install to hard drive on SCSI Controller. Have also figured out how to create hard drive VHDX file as fixed ahead of time and point that file during VM creation.

Choosing to install OS from an ISO image during VM creation results in a dynamic VHDX but now on an IDE Controller.

Which is the best way to install OS? During or later?

As far as Hyper V goes best to use SCSI or IDE?

If I have an IDE drive with an OS already installed can I convert to SCSI or vice versa? Have tried going into Hard Drive settings and changing from IDE(0) to SCSI(0) but end up with a boot failure. Changing back and all works fine.

Any and all input is appreciated - remember I am learning so will absorb and appreciate all input.

I have a workstation with 3 VMs. I am not a expert in IT. but I need atleast one of these VMs on second socket.

when I check the processor settings of VM this is what I see.

Processors:8

Numa nodes : 1

Sockets : 1

and this is the same for all VMs.

Does reading Hyper-V VM's KVP should be started?

Hi

I've number of VM in Hyper V (2008 R2). I want to know whether all the VMs has the Integration Services installed or not. I'm using KVPs (Key-Value Pair Data Item) WMI API, but I able to query the KVPs only when the VM started. Reading only one KVP, should I start VM one by one??!!.. (I know KVPs written in Guest Registry...)

Can I read the KVP without starting the VM?

Can you use NIC Teaming for Replica Traffic in a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster

We are in the process of setting up a two node 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster and will be using the Replica feature to make copies of some of the hosted VM's to an off-site, standalone Hyper-V server.

We have planned to use two physical NIC's in an LBFO Team on the Cluster Nodes to use for the Replica traffic but wanted to confirm that this is supported before we continue?

Cheers for now

Hi forum,

What is the best way to reboot a host server after updates? Do I shut down the guests first or if I reboot the host, does it automatically reboot the guests at the same time?

Thank you,

Jeremy

Help Setting up a Converged Network for Hyper-V 2012 R2 using 2 10Gbe nics - Questions / Help

We have 2 R820 Dell servers with 4 10Gbe nics-

We plan or have currently setup the following :

Windows 2012 R2 DC

  • 2 10Gbe nics in a Team for iSCSI traffic (Storage)
  • 2 10Gbe nics in a Team for Management / Production / CSV-HB / LM

Questions we have:

What is the role of the "Management Network"? Is this role to be the management of the Host and Hyper-V via SCVMM?

Which Network should have the default gateway configured and DNS in AD ? Management or Production?

We have a current setup that was done with out a management network initially and just a production network, the VSwitch was set to AllowManagmentOS: True (This I read a lot should be false - right? and if so what are the implications of changing it now or can it be without interrupting the current setup?)

Thanks for any help and if you need more information no problem -

Paul

Internal Switch DHCP

Hi

I have a host machine Server 2012 R2 with AD, DHCP and DNS plus the hyper v role. I have made a Win 8.1 VM. I have set up and internal switch and want the VM to get and DHCP address from the host. Both host and vm are connected to the internal switch and I have enabled VLAN id. I have binded the dhcp server on the host to the internal swtich/apaters. Is this possible to do as I can only get a 169 address on the VM ?

Thanks

If I install hyper V on a small slow dive eg 60gb 5400 RPM Sata but have the DataStores on a 1500 RPM SAS drive

will the slow drive for the hypervisor slow the access down for datastores?

I plan to have 3 win2012r2 separate server installs on the sas drives.

Thanks

tried to add 2012AD to 2008R2 AD, got error Unnamed VM could not initialize (0x80070005).

Had a SAS controller failure on a Dell R710, that house Exchange 2010, so was trying to stand up Exchange 2013 in coexistence mode, as I got Exchange 201 VM back up. On another R710, I had the DC 2009 R2 on a VM, so on a 3rd R710, I started a 2012R2 AD and joined to domain so I could use the second R710 as a host for 1st that failed to export VMs and save them.

The DNS for whole network went down and I discovered the DC on the second R710 had stopped, Tried to start it, but got failure to initialize 0x80070005. I noticed that the avhd file no longer exists.

Hyper-v mount hard drive

Hello all,

I am running Hyper-v on MS Server 2012 R-2 as the host with various clients.  I am not able to find how to use a hard drive as storage that will be mounted to a virtual client. In short the storage will be for a repository that is managed with Scientific Linux 7.  I can give more details if preferred.  I have looked extensively but cannot find a tutorial for this specific scenario.

I appreciate any insight,

Joe

Internal Switch DHCP

Hi

I have a host machine (Sever 2012 R2) and I have installed a VM (Win 8.1) The host has AD, DNS and DHCP as well as Hyper V Role. I have set up an internal switch and connected both virtual interfaces to it - host and VM. The VM does not get a DHCP address from the host. Satic IP's work fine. Can this be done - host supply VM with an DHCP address ?

Thanks

Howard

Virtual machine vlan changed

I have a weird issue where the vlan of a virtual machine is being changed without our intervention. I've scoured the event logs on the host and cannot find anything. We noticed a VM lost network communication. In the jobs in scvmm we found the AccessVlan was changed from what we set to 0. We had to reconnect the VM. Environment is Windows 2012 (NOT r2) and scvmm 2012 (also not r2).

VM Nic's on Hyper V not getting throughput

$

Hi,

I am new to creating Hyper V host machines so not sure where to look for this issue. I created a Server 2012 R2 Hyper V host with 3 Server 2008R2 VM's running underneath this host.

1. The host machine has 4 total NIC's connected to it.
2. Each NIC is running at 1Gbps
3. We have 1 NIC dedicated for each VM and 1 NIC is being used for the host

When transferring files between VM's I am not getting anywhere close to 1Gbps in speed even though all 3 VM's are on the same switch and in the same subnet. In fact I get less than 2 - 4Mbps. I don't have any issues when I try to transfer files between the host server and another physical server on the same subnet and on the same switch.

I have made sure that VMQ is enabled on the Host and Virtual NIC's. I also disabled Priority and VLAN tagging. The Host machine is a HP DL380 G8 with the latest NIC drivers installed so I don't think that's the problem.

Any help with this issue will be much appreciated.

Windows 8.1 / Hyper-V : Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections

I used to have a virtual switch that was bound to my wireless adapter. It was at one point removed, but now I want to re-create it.

But, now Hyper-V throws this error any time I try to bind a virtual switch to my wireless adapter:

Error applying Virtual Switch Properties changes

Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections.

Ethernet port '{Guid}' bind failed: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002).

I've tried uninstalling/re-installing my network adapter. My efforts have had no effect.

hello,

we want to establish a new isp we planning to use hyper-v for isp system (dns,billing,hosting...)

instead of install too dns on sperate serve will installed in same on in two virtual machine and we will make the cluster for better performance

the vm vhd will placed in data storage with fiber link connected to switch then to server

so do you think there is any problem for that ?

do you think there is any problem to use ms dns as main one ?

thanks.

Hyper-V VM is losing external connection to Internet

$

Issue:

The VM's is losing network connectivity to the external network over the virtual switch when creating a third or fourth VM. Sometimes even local connectivity is missing, but not always.

Scenario:

  • HP ProLiant ML350p Gen8
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with Hyper-V
  • 1 NIC for management, 1 NIC for VM's (HP Ethernet 1G 4-port 331i adapter, driver version 16.6.0.4.)
  • LAB environment on separate subnet for 'proof or concept' with no user load - yet!

Things I've tried:

  1. Update NIC to the latest available official driver on HPs webpage. No change.
  2. Alternating settings for 'Virtual Machines Queue' in NIC driver settings. No change
  3. Replaced physical firewall. No change.
  4. Firmware update using HP intelligent Provisioning (sufficient?). No change.
  5. Replaced physical switch. VM can now connect to external network (!?)

Workaround:

I've found out that changing physical switch will restore connectivity. However, loss of connectivity will occur again after creating another VM - until the switch is replaced once again.

I alternate between two switches; Dell PowerConnection 2816 and D-Link DGS-1008G. I know the D-link is a consumer switch (HP enterprise switches awaiting, but doubt it will matter) but it should work for now.

Question:

I'm not completely comfortable with putting this hypervisor in production with this irrational behavior and my question is if anybody else has encountered similar problems and if so how did you resolve it permanently?
