How to get the current user name of the host who is occupying a specific VM?

I'm developing a winform app with c# code to manage Hyper-V. I need to remind someone if he/she would take a VM which has already been occupied by others.

Is there any powershell cmd or WMI interface to get the current user of a specific VM?

Thanks!

Exporting VM to shared folder from 2k8 R2 Core Hyper-v to other 2k8 server

Hi,

I am trying o export VM to shared folder from my Hyper-V host based on 2k8 R2 Core edition and so far I fail miserably.

It seems that not only I had this problem but I was not able to find a solution yet in neither of the other threads I have found about it.

I have tried well advertised method of:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/03/15/exporting-to-importing-from-a-network-share-hyper-v.aspx

but it does not work in Core environment (I have also tried giving "everyone" and "guest" full NTFS and Shares permissions to no result). With above mentioned methods all I am getting is

Did anybody have found a working method to export to shared folder using Core version of 2k8 (both target and source are in one domain).

Thanks

Execute powershell commands on a VM from the host.

I’m wondering if it’s possible to execute PowerShell commands from the host that will be execute on a virtual machine.

I have around 10 VM and I need to run the same command on all of it and I need to do the same in other 15 host.  None of the VM belong to the same domain.

Prompt to Delete. HyperV Manager

Hello all

Windows 2012. Hyper-V Manager.

Question: Is there a way to have a prompt (OK/Cancel) when using the option to delete?

Once I meant to rename a computer (right click on VM) but since it's the option above delete, I accidentally deleted the virtual machine instead. I would like to know if there is an option to have a pop-up prompt to select OK or Cancel when deleting a virtual machine.

P2V Migration hardware problems - Blue Screen of DEATH!

We're starting to virtualize some of our HW servers. We're using a backup product called Dell AppAssure and porting the image to virtual from their backup snapshot.

I know this isn't a Dell forum, but what is happening is that the snapshot is taken with certain registry settings shich point to the local boot device.  Obviously when the image becomes virtual, that HW is gone.  There is a KB article from Dell which describes a way to boot to recovery, load the registry hive, modify some registry keys like so..

intelide = 0

pciide = 3

LSI_SAS = 0

https://support.software.dell.com/appassure/kb/120315

etc..

My question to you guys is this.  Is there some way for me to prep a server before hand, so that when I take a snapshot of it and migrate it, it won't blue screen.  Maybe some kind of prep tool.  I'm guessing there are lots of products for P2V migrations alone, but I can't take these servers down which is why using a backups snapshot is more attractive.

Thanks,

physical to virtual ends with errors, other methods export but launch with windows repair 2008 r2

New to hyperV here, plan to implement it in a few months. So I am practicing with it now.

I am trying to convert a working 2008 r2 physical to virtual using Microsoft virtual machine converter.  in the settings I was point it to my hyperv- server and I was getting errors, this was due to permissions. No matter what I did I can't get it to work, not sure whats wrong. SO I installed hyper V under my win8.1 pro machine shared the folders and the export started.

Upon the end of the export where it goes into "Fixing disk' I get an instant error no matter how may times I do this or how which server I try to export I get an error here.

It still created files and when I then copy those over to my test hyper V the win2008 R2 export goes into repair mode, I'm sure it's a driver issue but I would have expected that MS would have stripped the drivers our before export.

I then tried Acronis backup server and was able to export to MS virtual machine but this export also goes into windows repair more.

In the past I've used acronis and restored a physical server , this would also go into repair mode unless I use the "intelligent restore" which strips the drivers.

I don't want to tinker with the live server to get this to work since It's still in production, but I would like to get this to work , would any one have a tip, what can I do to provide more information on the root of the problem?

Can I apply policy-based QoS to the VM network traffic?

Hi,

If I create a QoS policy (policy-based QoS, for example with New-NetQosPolicy) on a Hyper-V host (2012 R2), will it apply to the host traffic only, or it will apply both to the VM traffic and to the host traffic?

By “host traffic” I mean the traffic that is sourced or destined to the host operating system - as opposed to traffic sourced or destined to the VM’s running on this host. Please note that I am NOT asking about Hyper-V specific QoS policies (Hyper-V QoS, Set-VMNetworkAdapter).

DC from syspreped vhdx

in lab I am usually using generalized vhdx for VMs

I just set up a new AD with DC from syspreped Server 2012.

First trouble I hit setting up time. After some troubleshooting I unregister/reregister time service.

But could not start it. And the error was related to SID. So I just reinstalling DC from ISO.

The question: is it known that DC must not be created from syspreped disk?

Does such a disk could create troubles with other member servers like SQL, SCCM?

Thanks.

Use hyper-v manager to Hyper-V server with public IP

Hello,

I have recently purchased a dedicated server online, and a fresh copy of hyper-v has been installed. This is the free version, and not what's included with Windows Server 2012 R2. I have a quick question. I can RDP into my server, which is located on the Internet. When I try to connect an MMC snapin, like Hyper-V manager, it is inaccessible. Is there a way to manage hyper-v servers found on the Internet? And, if so, is this a good idea?

Thanks to all that reply,

Mike

Unable to specify both source and size with New-VHD command

Hi all!  I'm working with Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (fully patched).

new-vhd -Path c:\util.vhdx -Fixed -SourceDisk 3 -SizeBytes 50GB fails with the errorNew-VHD : Parameter set cannot be resolved using the specified named parameters.

However, if I run the command above without either the SourceDisk or SizeBytes parameter it succeeds.  It only fails when they're both present.  TechNet documentation shows both parameters in the same command.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Hyper-V Vlan tagging. Question

Hi everyone,

The question is simple. My NIC is a Realtek PCI GBe familly controller, Priority and VLAN are enabled. I havent any physical switch and when i create an external virtual switch on hyper-v if I add a VM on VLAN 2 why it doesnt have Internet access or can pingn the router ?

The virtual external switch has no default vlan on it, so it supoosed to be on TRUNK mode. I also have a static route on my router 192.168.2.0/24 -> 192.168.1.254.

If I add a VM with no VLAN tag and manually assign the IP adress it can communicate with the router but if I add a VLAN tag it doesnt.

What you think ?

Thanks

Hyper-V replica

Hello,

I have a question about Hyper - V replica.

I have configured Hyper - V replica for one virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 (hypervisors are using Windows server 2012R2). I have created also backup with windows backup in recovery site. I have the following issue:

Second server has stopped to be replicated before a month and there is no working backup either.

I have a problem with the primary Virtual machine and it is not working now. I checked the log in primary hipervisor and it looks that there some data that should be replicated.

I was wondering whether if i start the secondary virtual machine the replication will be resumed to the last available snapshot?

 Thank you in advance!

Hyper-V VM Network issue with Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtreme II 10 GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

Hi all,

I have some strange network issue with my Hyper-V computer.

The server is PowerEdge R820, with 2 Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtreme II 10 GigE (NDIS VBD Client) adapters and 2 Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtreme II 1 GigE (NDIS VBD Client) adapters. OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest updates installed.

I configured one External Virtual Network bind to a 1 GB adapter(let's call it vSwitch-1GB) and one External Virtual Network bind to a 10 GB adapter(let's call it vSwitch-10GB). When the VM connect to vSwitch-1GB, everything goes fine, it can get IP address and can ping other machines in the same LAN, and vice versa. However, it the VM connect to the vSwitch-10GB, it can get IP info, but most of the ping failed, and vice versa.

I tried to use the build-in driver, tried to disable TCP Offloading and other Offloading, tried to disable power saver on the network adapter, but the same issue persist.

Intermittent network connectivity loss on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster VM's

I am experiencing an interesting problem with our Windows Server 2012 R2 three node cluster. On one of the nodes network connectivity tends to drop randomly for the virtual machines network interface. The associated network card on the affected node indicates a connected as well as all the virtual machines on the affected node. This only happens for the network attached to the production virtual network. Live migration and the CSV virtual networks never lose connectivity.

Rebooting the virtual machines does not resolve the problem. Only physically unplugging the affected network cable and plugging it back in resuming network connectivity.

All host are up to date via Cluster Aware Updating and the network card drivers are all current.

The frequency is totally random sometimes in between two days to two months between incidents.

Any thoughts on a cause?

Issues with continued use of Shared VHDx

$

Hi all,

I have been struggling to get Shared VHDx to work properly for the last week or so.  I have a two 2012 R2 file server VMs clustered sitting on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster, I would like to use Shared VHDx for the Quorum Disk Witness and for the File server cluster storage.

Initially when I first create, share and add the VHDx to the two file servers it works without an issue, the file server cluster role will live migrate and storage stays accessible.  However after a period of time e.g. overnight if either of the servers are shutdown/restarted they will not restart.  The error I receive is:

'FS1B' failed to add device 'Virtual Hard Disk'.

Failed to open attachment
'Path to disk\Quorum.vhdx'. Error: 'The request is not supported'.

'FS1B': Cannot get information for attachment 'Path to disk\Quorum.vhdx'.

Failed to open attachment 'Path to disk\Quorum.vhdx'. Error: 'The request is not supported.'.

I have searched around online and came across a couple of people with a similar issue, one fixed it with adjusting his Network Binding (this did not help me).  If I turn off the sharing on the VHDx the server it is attached to will boot fine.

I have also made sure the networking and storage access to the Hyper-V hosts are identical and that all four servers are up to date patching wise.

I don't think I'm missing anything but it really doesn't want to work and driving me a little nuts.

Thanks!

Hyper-V Migration

Hi.

I just really want to double check that what I am about to do wont break everything.

I have a 2 node Hyper-V 2008R2 cluster, with 15 VM's).

I have purchased a 3rd server where I will install Server 2012R2 and Hyper-v.
the idea build 1 server and connect up to the Shared storage. Shut down all VM's

Import them into the New Hyper-V server

Break the old cluster, rebuild server to 2012R2 and create highly available cluster. power on the VM's.

rebuild final server to 2012R2 and then have a 3 node cluster.

Does this seem correct in terms of order or should I switch around any steps

thanks

Pass through Performance

Hi,

We have a problem with performance on pass-thru disks on our VMs and Hyper-V hosts. When we directly provision LUNs from 3PAR via Fibre HBAs the performance is shocking (diskspd tests). However, when we use a VHDx file stored on the same LUN the performance is nearly 3 times faster.

Surely this doesnt sound right. We also tried provisioning a SSD volume from our 3PAR but the performance on this is the same compared to VHDx. How can VHDx be faster than SSD volume. Anyone got any ideas on this? What sort of performance do you see on your pass-thru disks compared to VHDx.

Really struggling to figure out what could cause should dramatic difference. Any help or suggestions highly appreciated.

The diskspd parameters i am using are: -o8 -t1 -c25G -d120.

Thank You
