strange memory behaviour

Hi,

Host 20012 R2

VM 2012 R2

assigned 6GB of RAM for SQL server.

Under assigned memory in Hyper-V manager it shows around 1GB but in task manager of VM around 6GB

The screenshot was made after opening SQL installation media.

During installation it was around 6GB. Could not find the process taken Gigs...

After restart the same picture. Assigned is a bit higher that 1 GB but in task man 5.8GB

What is this? I want to try switching to static memory.

Please see the screenshot.

Hyper-V VLAN changes

On few occasions now we have noticed that a server becomes inaccessible from others in the same domain. Server can ping the local domain controllers, but nothing else. When we run the powershell command to check the status of the VLAN, we see that it is configured correctly to "Community 2,10".

We have found that way around it is by running the command below to re-apply the same settings:

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -VMName 'servername' -Community -PrimaryVlanId 2 -SecondaryVlanIdList 2,10

As soon as we do this, server becomes accessible once again. Host is running Windows 2012 R2 clustered server and we have seen this on VM's running different Server OS's (2003, 2008, 2008 R2).

Just wanted to check and see if anyone else have experienced something similar and if there is a way around it.

Thanks.

Hyper-V Replica Paused After Physical Host Reboots

$

We have a couple VMs that are setup using Hyper-V Replica. Everything works fine until one of the physical hosts reboots. Each reboot causes the replication to pause. When the host comes back online, it does not resume replication automatically, which means we have to manually resume replication each time we have a host server reboot.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Is there a way to have replication resume automatically?

Thanks!

for an implementation of FailOver clustering of Hyper-V 2012 R2, it is a best practice to use Hyper-V Replica or physically connection connection to the servers to storage???

Shared VHDX Performance Penalty

Good day to all.

So we have to deploy Hyper-V Cluster using EMC VNX 5300 as base of storage system.

When i connect to VM some vhdx file on dedicated vSCSI controller i get good performance (on 4K blocks) of 4.5k IOPS, but when i make this vhdx as shared disk it start work very slow and IOPS falls to 1.3k.

What can i do to use shared vhdx and not to get so little IOPS?

CSV Cache of 2Gb doesn't help.

Hyper-V - virtual machines don't start automatically after power outage

Hi,

I have a HP server running Windows 2012 R2 + Hyper-V. On this server, four VM have Windows Server 2003 R2, and one VM has Windows 2012. After power outage, 1 2003 R2 VM and 1 2012 VM are started properly, but the other three machines aren't. I've started it manually. All VM's have last version of Hyper-V integration tools installed, the option "Automatically start VM if it was running before the service was stopped" was chosen. I'm not very familiar with Hyper-V, so, I've investigated only Hyper-V-VMMS event log. There are some recurring errors:

The Integration Services Setup Disk image could not be updated: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x80070020).

and

Failed to get the disk information.

But I think it isn't a clue.

How can I clarify, why these machines aren't started automatically?

Hyper-V machine do not start

Dear All,

I have few Hyper-V VM's on my Laptop (OS windows 8) which were working fine for a very long time. Last March 2014 i saved all the VM's and since then I never started them.

During this time i ran couple of windows updates and restarted the machine. Last week i tried to start the saved VM's but they never get started. I don’t get any valuable or descriptive error except VM failed to starts the machine (Machine Id XXXXx). In the event log i see timeout period for the thread.

Thinking the saved state is corrupted, deleted the saved state and tried to start it again , but still same issue.

Later i uninstalled the Hyper-V, rebooted the laptop and installed it again following a reboot. Tried to create a VM which was successfully created but that too never starts.

Googled the issue to find if someone has similar issue but so far there is no luck and issue is still wasting my time.

Can some please help me to resolve this or guide me to get more descriptive error?

Regards

Sufian

VDI virtualization servers: a separate cluster or a part of a common cluster?

$

We've bought a new storage system, and I'm in process of rebuilding our Hyper-V virtualization farm. I intend to create a highly available solution based on Hyper-V (Windows Server 2012 R2) clustering technology.

We have only four servers connected to the storage system. I need at least three of them to create a robust cluster of server virtual machines. In addition, I need to deploy a pilot VDI farm for hosting at least 50 workstation VMs. They will need an entire physical server.

The question is, should I deploy all four servers as a part of a single four-node Hyper-V cluster? Or should I deploy three servers in a three-node cluster for hosting server VMs and then create a single-node cluster for VDI (supposing that it will be extended with new servers in the future)? The first design is much more robust, but it requires that I give full control over the SC VMM server to a person who manages that VDI installation. I don't want to do it due to security reasons.

Any ideas?

delete checkpoint

Hi,

need quick confirmation before deleting checkpoints...

Server 2012R2 Host - server 2012R2 VM with 2 checkpoints after all configurations done.

Want to merge checkpoints.

Even on test machines I never tried to delete Checkpoint Subtree.

Question 1.

Would it be more  secure to delete checkpoints one by one with a shutdown after each deletion or I can click on top one and delete subtree?

Question 2.

Also, just for the information...

Let say I have 5 checkpoints and want to merge all of them one by one, would  the order of deletion matter?

Thanks.

Server 2012 R2 Network Teaming Switch Independent Dynamic with VMQ - Do i still need to run set-netadaptervmq -name "VMS 1" -BaseProcessorNumber x-MaxProcessors x

Hi,

When I setup a Server 2012 R2 Network Team Switch Independent Dynamic with VMQ do i still need to run set-netadaptervmq -name "VMS 1" -BaseProcessorNumber x-MaxProcessors x?

Different internet sources say different things so I kept it default (no set-netadaptervmq) according to http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2013/09/10/vmq-deep-dive-2-of-3.aspx

I do get Event ID 106:

Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{9A983737-533F-44DB-B59B-4B474698B613} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver #2) on switch 21519DF6-CE43-4B89-AD5A-36465A946D57 (Friendly Name: VMS Virtual Switch) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.

Thanx for helping me out.

BP for presenting Clients additional disks

Which way offers better performance and design?

Attaching an additional iSCSI disk directly attached to the client VM (Windows)

or

Attaching the iSCSI disk to the host server, and adding as an additional disk in the VM config.

I can think of positive and negative benefits for both.

Thanks.

Deploying VM using VM template in SCVMM 2012

$

Hi experts,

I have SCVMM 2012 running on Windows Server 2012 R1.

I have a custom linux VM running on it with two disks.I created a VM template using this VM.

But I have a large disk of size 160GB. So when I deploy a VM using this template, the copy operation is taking a very long time of 3 hours approx. to complete. This is very long, even if I run the SCVMM server in the Same Windows Server.

Any pointers on how to reduce this time?

I even disabled Encryption and used BITS over HTTP. But that does not reduce the time much.

Thanks in advance,

Saleem

Move VHD

$

Hi,

I have standalone W12K hyper-v server running some (W8K R2) VM, also on my network I have a 10 node (W8K R2)  hyper-v cluster. My question what is the best method to move some of the VMs from the standalone W12K box to the W8K R2 cluster.

All the VMs are VHD and VHDX files and other possible problem is that the W12K box has an AMD processor and the cluster nodes are using Intel.

My original plan was to copy the VHD to a USB disk and then copy to the cluster and setup via Fail Over Cluster Manager.

Hyper-V Error

I am getting this error constantly on all of nodes:

Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{6F58A4CD-BBBB-4E4A-B7A2-122CDC06E7A2} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver #2) on switch 597752D5-FF11-4436-83B5-449630DF04E9 (Friendly Name: vSwitch) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.

Is this anything serious? Any resolution to it?

How to automate VMs: Sysprep(Master Image) + Unatended .xml(add to domain) + change name(base on physical name)

$

Dear friends

I will like to deploy a number (10) of VMs.

I have successfully Sysprep the image and clone it.

Then by means of unattended.xml, I have been able to join it to the domain with the random name assigned.

Here is my problem:

For consistency, the "file name of the VM's are exactly the same": lets say, VM1, VM2, ...VM10. (The name in the AD is anything random as "Asd5678JK".

By means of a Registry look up I can see the assigned File_name and manually script a change_name script.

-------

1) The unattended.xml will not do the second order after the first reboot.

2) I can swap the orders so the name is change but the VM is not added to the domain.

3) IS there any way to do this by means of powershell or a different batch procedure.

Thanks

vreplica and windows 2012 r2 backups combined

$

Hi

Hi

I would like to know if the following is possible with hyper-v 2012 r2 vreplica

Host 1 - running 4 vm's and replicated to host 2 (same site)

Host 2 - running 4 vm's and replicated to host 1 (same site)

Host 1 - carrying out native backups of vm's to a NAS (local site)

Host 2 - carrying out native backups of vm's to a NAS (local site)

then for host 1 and host 2 to have their vm's vreplicas extended to a DR site (different location)

Maybe the design above is simply too cumbersome and a hyper-v cluster locally would be a better option combined with vreplica from both hosts to a DR site (standalone server) - 50Mb link between locations

Thoughts appreciated.
