Migration from VMware to Hyper-V 2012

I am looking for some advice on migrating from VMware with an existing SAN to Hyper-V 2012 on a new SAN. I have 5 ESXi 4.1 hosts hosting about 20 virtual machines on a MD3000 SAN that holds that data. I want to migrate to Hyper-V that will be utilizing a new recently purchased Dell Equalogic SAN as its storage. What would be the best way to do this? I had thought about getting the 1st Hyper-V host setup and configured with the Equalogic, running that along side the existing VMware infrastructure and then converting the vms to Hyper-V on the new storage with the standalone MVMC. Once all the vms are converted I would then re-purpose the MD3000 as additional backup storage. Would this be a workable solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

v-switch question

When assigning a physical nic to a v-switch is it necessary to give that nic a static IP first? For clarification I realize that DHCP will give it an IP if it needs one but what I am wondering is, does it even need one?

In a related question, I did give static IP's to nic's on a server and then assign several nic's to specific v-switches.  When I ping at least one of those static IP's I get a response.  But what I need now is to know what IP's I gave to those nics since they seem to be using them and I don't want to create a conflict. But If I look at the physical adapter properties all it shows now is "Hyper-V extensible virtual switch" which has no properties to view.  The v-switch manager has no information about what IP the associated physical adapter might be using.

This is in regards to Server 2012 R1 and R2.  The existing server where I am trying to get the IP's I used on the nics before associating them to v-switches is R1 but I am building an R2 server so I am wondering about whether or not to assign IP's to the nic's prior to associating them to v-switches on the new server.

What are the host network requirements for a 2012 R2 failover cluster using fiber channel?

I've seen comments on here regarding how the heartbeat signal isn't really required anymore - is that true?  We started using Hyper-V in its infancy and have upgraded gleefully every step of the way.  With 2012 R2, we also upgraded from 1gb iSCSI to 8GB Fiber Channel.  Currently, I have three NICs in use on each host.  One for "No cluster communication" on it's own VLAN.  Another for "Allow cluster network communication on this network" but NOT allowing clients, on a different VLAN.  And lastly the public network which allows cluster comms and clients on it (public VLAN).

Is it still necessary to have all three of these NICs in use?  If the heartbeat isn't necessary any more, is there any reason to not have two public IPs and do away with the rest of the network?  (two for fault tolerance)  Does Live Migration still use Ethernet if FC is available?  I wasn't sure what all has changed with these requirements since Hyper-V first came out.

If it matters, we have 5 servers w/160GB RAM, 8 NICs, dual HBAs connected to redundant FC switches, going to two SANs.  We're running around 30 VMs right now.

Can someone share their knowledge with me regarding the proper setup for my environment?  Many Thanks!

hi, in vmware i have install 2008 server. After installing i try to install hyper-v but i was getting a error that "my processor is not VT-compatible or i have to enable virtualization from bios" but i already have intel i3-3220 processor and virtualization already enabled in my bios. Then why this error showing. Is it my hardware problem or anything else. Please do suggest me. Thanks
1.my board architecture was 64bit and my server2008 also 64bit

2.my processor intel i3-3220 with 3.3ghz with vt enabled

3.my system memory 4GB RAM

Even i try to install it in physical machine but same problem. so is it hardware related issue?

VM - No internet access

Host - 2012R2 Data Center with Hyper-V role and basic file & print sharing. AD is another physical host

2 NICs with Teaming into vlan TEAM2012

Issue:

Very close...

I created a VM and loaded 2012R2 in it. However, I cannot get internet access in the VM. The VM adapter is Microsoft Hyper-V Network Adapter with static IPv4 & IPv6 addresses both pointing to the DNS & Gateway. The VM adapter is "unidentified network". The Host  is NIC teamed as TEAM2102. On the Host Network connections I see the 2 real NICs, TEAM2012 and vEthernet (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver - Virtual). The vEthernet is "Unidentified network".

In the Hyper-V Manager, the Virtual Switch Manager name is Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Drive - Virtual Switch and is set as internal for connection type. There is a connection type for external network and it has the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver available; however, if I select that the system fails and reboots.

How do I get internet access working and clear this "unidentified public network"?

Cluster manager unresponsive

Hi all, i'm in trouble with a 4 node 2012 hyper-v cluster. After some weeks of normal operations i cannot connect to failover cluster manager who tells me that "the object does not exists" even if i could connect in rdp to the virtual ip server, resolve the address with nslookup and so on. Meanwhile even Hyperv management console goes unresponsive and does not let me connect and manage the server (localhost or not is the same) the error in this case is "check the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect the server". Vms hosted by these servers still are responsive and in normal operations but i cannot manage them and/or view any state. I then check the service trying to restart that but it hangs and or crash. The only way i can solve this situation is shutdown the host to migrate the vms with several (minimal, modearate) downtimes. looking around in services and dependecies i noticed the RPC object seems to not exists and there is no way to restart the service.

Now i've restarted the servers and everything works fine, even if i think this issue should come back in some days/weeks. what should i check? maybe the failures comes after a live migration but i cannot tell this were an unluky situation or that should start the problem: everyday migrations don't give us any problems. this is going to be very frustrating.

add v-processor to running SQL server

Hello,

if I remember correctly adding virtual processors to running SQL server could be tricky from performance point of view.

May be I mistaken and there is absolutely no problem...

I am setting up SQL 2012 on Server 2012. Can I be that there will be no impact in the future if I will start with 1 processors and lets say in two month I will add second one if necessary and in 6 month I will add 2 more to bring it to 4 if necessary.

Basically, it is general question: can I add processors to SQL server if required.

What are best practice? I know that playing with processor affinity is a bad idea.

Thanks.

System Hangs When creating virtual disk

$

Hello,

I have been having an issue creating virtual disks that are over 500GB. What happens is the vdisk is created but the system hangs and the only way I can get back into it is to power it off... Once I get back into the server and I try to load the new vdisk in a virtual machine v-manager tells me it is a corrupt disk. I have looked in the event viewer and I see no errors, except for the typical unexpected shutdown. This happens if I use Windows 2008 Hyper-V or Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, I have 5TB of free space on the partition that I want to use for the vdisk, thinking there was something wrong with the internal drives I tried again with an iSCSI 16 TB DroboPro... Same thing, disk is created and the system locks up. Another thing that I noticed that I have not seen before with ESX or XenServer, when creating the disk it takes forever, I mean a full day for a 1TB vdisk, seems kind of long. The 500GB took about a half of a day to create...

This is a new Lenovo TS140 with 8GB of RAM and three network cards in it. The system only needs to hold a small Linux image that is going to be used for a storage gateway.

Any ideas?

Adding memory to guest OS in Hyper-V 2012R2

I have a production SQL Server that I need to increase the memory on. The VM had 32gb allocated to it and SQL is set to use a maximum amount of 28gb. I increased the memory in Hyper-V and restarted the VM, but the additional memory I set is not showing up in Task Manager. If I check Resource Monitor I see an installed amount of 43008mb, but a total amount of 32768mb. It seems the additional memory is set to Hardware Reserve, which is sitting at 10240mb. I am not using dynamic memory.

I am using Hyper-V 2012R2 on the host, but the guest OS is 2008R2. Any help is appreciated.

Incorrect source mac address when network packet leaves hyper-v host

$

I am experiencing the following communication problem with my VM server running  on server 2012 hyper-v host:

when a network package leaves the vNIC of the VM it has the source mac address of the vNIC however when the same package leaves the physical NIC of the Host the package no longer has the source MAC address of the vNIC but that of the physical NIC.

It forgot to mention that the uplink of the virtual switch on the host is a network team using LACP and that uses the source and destination IP address as its load balancing mechanism.

Please note the following:

  • this behavior disappear when I either remove one of the cables from one of the teamed nics (the sources MAC is always that of the vNIC when the packet leaves the host etc)
  • the problem also disappears if I configure a static ARP in the client
  • The above behavior does not apply for all  communication for example I can have the cables of both teamed NICS connected and simple change the IP of the above problematic TFTP client form 192.168.1.22 to 192.168.1.13 and the communication works OK as the source MAC address of the VM will always be the correct MAC address that belongs to the vNIC.

Last but not least we have tried, replacing the NICS in the server, connecting the host server to a different switch and even replacing all the cabling to the host server but none of these helped to resolve the problem.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Any idea what could be causing this?

Hyper-v cluster with core switch downtime... what to do?

$

Is there a way to essentially "pause" the hyper-v cluster and keep things running but do NOT attempt to failover anything for any reason?

We have one Procurve 5412zl switch with two c7000 enclosures. In each c7000 enclosure there are two switches that connect all the blade servers within the enclosure. Those two switches are interconnected internally so they can communicate within the enclosure.

So if the core switch goes down the hyper-v servers in the same c7000 enclosure can still communicate but they will be seperated from the others in the other enclosure.

So we have 4 hyper-v servers in one enclosure and 3 in another. If i disconnect the core switch i'm wondering what will happen (if I reboot the switch which is what I need to do).

How can I avoid having to shut down everything for this and just tell hyper-v cluster to not do anything when the network is lost?

Ditect Attach Storage question

I have question on storages on hyper-v.

We have a SAN storage on our company and installed hyper-v on one server.

My question is what will happen to the storage disk on the Server machine itself?

Will I still see and use it the way I see the SAN storage?

Can Hyper-V install the guess OS on its direct attached storage?

Hi
I Have a HP-DL380G8 server and windows server 2012R2 on it called BaseServer,

we have also 5 Hyper-v Windows 2012R2 machins on BaseServer. one of them is AD-DC. all 5 Hyper-v servers are joined to a domain.

the problem is when we start working with this solution some of our network device (Like access points- WIFI) stop working! this means we can see Access point but no device can connect to it!

when we disconnect the HP server from Lan they start working again.

what we should do?

Please help us

I want to use 16-bit apps on Windows-8. Is Hyper-V a feature of Windows-8, so all I must do is to enable it and the I can use 16-bit apps under Windows-8? Or is it a virtual machiso that I must istall other OS under it and under that OS use 16-bit apps? Answer, please.

Limit incoming bandwidth of Guest VM in Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host

Hi,

I'm trying to limit incoming bandwidth of Guest VM on Hyper-V (Host is running Windows Server 2012 R2). I noticed once I enabled Bandwidth Management, it only limits the outgoing bandwidth. The incoming is not limited to what I set earlier.

May I know how to set limitation on incoming bandwidth?

Thanks.

Cannot uninstall Win2k12 HyperV Integration services; Help!

$

Hi,

So I have 3 W2k8R2 VMs that were running on a W2k8R2 Ent Host.  They had version 6.1 of the Integration Services on them.

We temporarily moved the 3 VMs to a W2K12R2 host and installed the W2k12R2 Integration Services, which are version 6.3.

Now I have moved the 3 VMs back to the original W2k8R2 host, but no way, no how can I get the version 6.3 Integration services off of them.  Even after an uninstall on the W2k12R2 host, they are still there.  If i try to reinstall Ver 6.1 from the W2k8r2 host, it does not overwrite the newer files.

So, when i try to back up the W2k8R2 host and the VMs, the host's VSS cannot talk to the newer version of VSS on the VMs, so HyperV stops the VMs at the beginning of the backup job to snapshot the VMs.  It restarts them after 30 to 60 minutes and completes the backup.  Before when the VMs had 6.1 on them, the VMs would backup "hot" and online with now downtime.

Any assistance greatly appriciated.  Is there a way to uninstall 6.3, or am I hooped?
