reuse virtual machines after hyper-v server failure

Hi,

A problem that occured some time ago has left me wishing for a better way for a Hyper-V host to handle Machines...

I had a Server 2012 Datacenter server running about 18 different servers (Windows and Linux) And something happened with the server at patch tuesday and literally killed it, it would not let me log in, and the hyper-Visor did not start, it was dead in the water. So i decided to reinstall with WS2012 R2 and installed the Hypervisor. Now at this Point the Raid partitions is available and all data is intact...... i changed the default path of virtual Machines to what it was Before the crash... Aaaaand there is nothing there... Trying to import Machines will fail.... since no machine was "exported" Before the crash it did not allow me to import them. so i created a new machine and reused the vhd for 2 domaincontrollers and checked the replication between them.... Everything seemed alright, last step Before i could start attaching the rest of the Machines was to add the newly installed Hyper-V Server to the domain (not recommended perhaps but makes my Life a lot easier) But it failed miserably, it did not find the domaincontrollers, it did state in the log that it did indeed identify them correctly, it was no connectivity issues since i could ping them and map network drives etc, all firewalls are down.. It just happened to be when i dug Deep into DNS that GUID´s where showing Little bit everywhere where the actual servernames where supposed to be at, so the servers got lost in translation :-/ !

Thank god for DPM, i ended up with restoring the domaincontrollers to a second hyper-v host, then joined the WS2012R2 to the domain, and installed the dpm client, and restored all the rest of the servers thru DPM.....

My question here is, Why.... for the love of GOD can´t hyper-v get a database, or a recovery database, integrated within (and that be placed on a raid for example) and have a recovery-mode on Hyper-V which will use that database to recover after a disaster of which i happened to end up in.

I can´t imagine that everyone who uses Hyper-V are using shared storage and live migration-technology, but as single-hosts, Please make our lives easier :)

Thank you for reading this.

/Robert

unplanned automatic failover using Hyper-v Replica , why don't the VMs start up automatically on the replica server?

Hi,

We have cluster with two hosts (Host01 , host02) replicated to another server (Replica01)

in order to test automatic failover to the replica server  (Replica01) We unplugged the power cables from Host01 and Host 02

now the VMs on the replica server is still off  , why don't the VMs start up  automatically on the replica server?

File Server Disk Architecture

I'm trying to work out how best to configure storage for a new Hyper-V based setup.  I will be running a single Hyper-V host with approx 6 VMs to begin with.  One of these VMs will be a Server 2012 file server, I'm am trying to work out how I should provide it with the disk that it will then serve to its clients.

I have the following storage hardware:

  • Hardware Raid 6 - 8 * 2TB arranged as one large volume, I have some very large files (60GB+) and don't have a logical way of dividing them, hence one 12TB volume.
  • Directly attached 500GB SSD for VM boot disks
  • Directly attached 320GB Hyper-V host boot drive.

I have come across the following options:

  • Place RAID in the Hyper-V box, create a 12TB VHDX in the raid volume, add this to the file server VM.
  • Place RAID in Hyper-V box, configure 12TB volume as a passthrough to the file server VM.
  • Attach RAID to another box and provide the 12TB volume as an IScsi target and get the file server VM to attach to it

As I see it the 12TB VHDX is just not practical, I don't have the resources to create a new 12TB volume to hold the new VHDX and then copy the data across to it.  Once I've copied the data across I'm left with a 12TB file which will be a nightmare to move around if/when I need to.  I'm concerned about having all eggs in one 12TB basket, if the file system holding it goes wrong then all the data is lost.

I would go the ISCSI route, except that the Windows ISCSI target only supports virtual disks, so I'd be in the same boat, so I'd have to get hold of another ISCSI target, the other windows ones are expensive or slightly 'untested' looking.  The Linux alternatives give me headaches with NTFS support, and as I said I don't have the resources to copy everything to a new Linux filesystem volume.

So I'm left with pass through disks, these generally seem to be discouraged, and I understand why, but can anyone come up with some answers to the problems I list above.  If anyone can answer my fears about a 12TB file being unmanageable, then I could look into creating the 12TB VHDX as a dynamic disk so that the 12TB extra free space is not required during transition.

Hello Expert,

I have four VM (say VM1, VM2, VM3, VM4) in microsoft HyperV platform, but some time I can not ping or RDP on VM4, until I restart the VM4, but other three VM are working fine and even there is no problem in network setting, I face this problem twice in a week, then I restart VM4, then it works. Please suggest.

Hyper V 2012 Cluster Validation using SMB 3.0 confusing Warnings.

Hi, don't know if anyone can just confirm if these is okay or not. !

10 node 2012 R2 cluster with SMB3.0 SOFS backend, all running fine, Live migration all running fine.

I ran another cluster validation today and got these results for each node SP-VHCE01 to SP-VHCE10.

Now 10.201.30.64 is fully routable for hosts, and 10.201.242, is not routable for cluster communication, so I presume this is nothing to worry about :-

this next warning is very strange, now, there is no problem live migrating any Virtual servers to any node, plus all the shares ARE accessible from each node when I log in.

this just worries me, even though everything seems to work fine.

Thoughts anyone ?

Hello expert,

Do we need a separate NIC card for hyperV network? I mean can we use the host's NIC card for hyperV network to communicate extenal. I have one NIC card in my physical server, but my VM can not ping its host machine nor external network, pls suggest.

Hyper-V replication error

Hi
We are having a problem enabling replication on our VMs.
we have two hyper visors each running 2012r2.
The Hyper-V manager is being run from win8.1

They are not clustered. The ports have been opened in the firewall (and for testing I have turned off the firewall).  both servers are using HTTP  kerberos and have been delegated in the AD.

If i set up a vm on hyper-A then try to enable replication to hyper-B i get the following error:
hyper-v failed to enable replication for virtual machine. The server name or address could not be resolved (0x00002EE7)
If I set up a vm on hyper-B and try to enable replication to hyper-A it works fine.
I can ping both servers from each other
I have tied the "fix" suggested here

Does any one else have a suggestion to try?

Rob

I have 5 public IP addresses and I want to use my vms on the internet.

how configure my NICs an vSwitche?
I have configured 4 vlan for each vm and dedicate each NIC for each vm,and setting external mode for vswitch, but i cant see them on the net.

Boot Failure - Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device -While trying to boot newly created VM from ISO or DVD Drive?

Hello,

I have a new HP DL360eGen8 Server with a fresh install of Windows 2012 Standard running Hyper V.

I am trying to create and boot a new Windows 2008 VM and no matter what I do... Boot from ISO or DVD, I get a boot failure message while trying to create a new VM?

I have other new HP Servers and Dell Servers that I had no problem creating my VM's...

Now with this New HPDL360 I have a problem.  The HP server has all the latest driver updates etc?

I have tried to boot the VM from several different ISO downloads?  And also from the DVD drive directly?  Still the same boot failure error.

This sure is a really strange problem?

Hi,

I have two Domain Controllers running virtualized on a 4 node cluster of Hyper-V 2012. I would like to know if there is a way to tell the VMs or Hyper-V or the cluster NOT to host both DC workloads on the same node.

Thanks,

Not enoth memory in the system to start the virtual machine with ram size 5858

I have a huge problem.

i have server 2012 r2 standard installed over hyper-v as virtual machine for session based vdi. Few days ago i restarted the VM because of the microsoft auto updates said system restart required to complete the updates.

Now i can not start the VM because it gives me virtual machine connection error:

" The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'server 2012 r2 session vdi'.

'server 2012 r2 session vdi' could not initialize.

Not enogh memory in the system to start the virtual machine server 2012 r2 session vdi.

'server 2012 r2 session vdi' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxx)

Not enough memory in the system to start the virtual machine server 2012 r2 session vdi with ram size 5858 megabytes.  (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxx)..

The physical server has 8gb ram, and 5858mb set for the virtual machine (the maximum it gives the option for).

BTW, it was working just fine with this configuration until the restart after the updates.

What can i do?

How can i turn the vm on?

can i undo the updates ?

How can i at least copy the files that on the desktop of the vm? (important xml files..

Thanx.

Snapshot?

I see a number of snapshots that form a tree. Every time I add a snapshot a new leaf gets added to the tree. If a remove the parent of a snapshot will the child be removed also? How can I make the "current" state a parent node not dependent on any previous nodes?

Thank you.

WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037

I have couple of VMs Server 2012 R2 RTM on Hyper-v Host running the same OS.

All machines including host and VM that is not in domain have an error in Windowsupdate.log:

AU WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037

FW and UAC are off on all. There are posts on web discussing the same error but most of them connect this to WSUS or Config Manager. And it is clear because we are touching Windowsupdate.log when troubleshooting WSUS. And because WSUS on 2012 is BUGGY this error confuses too.

Finally, as mentioned earlier I deployed NEW server 2012 not from SYSPREP and did not place it to the domain. Updated the machine from MS update. Everything is OK beside the same error about COST :).

So now it is clear it has nothing to do with WSUS or Configuration manager. It indicates to some Network issue. But there is no clear answer. Some suggest just to ignore the error if everything is OK. But I would like to have a clean log. And it is just interesting what could cause the problem. Is it Hyper-V stuff or Server 2012 itself. Anyway I guess I am doing right by posting a question on HV forum since here are people that should know 2012 .

Thanks.

HYPER-V, Virtualisation clash.

I know that virtualisation is a requirement for enabling Hyper V. But i am facing this very weird problem. My HYPER V is running fine without Virtualisation being enabled!. And even if i try to enable it through the BIOS, it is not getting enabled. And if i try enabling virtualisation without enabling Hyper V in my system, then it gets enabled. But enabling hyper-V when virtualisation is enabled does not allow my computer to boot up the next time. I am terribly confused with this! Someone please help me. I need both virtualisation and Hyper V to run for my WP 8 Emulator.

System Config:

4GB RAM, Windows 8 Pro, 64 Bit.

Bug in HyperV Integration Services 6.3.9600.16384 ?

Hi,

I just deployed a VM (Generation 1) hosted on a 2012 R2 Datacenter-Hypervisor. For deployment I used WDS and the VM had a "Legacy Network Adapter". Deployment works fine. After deployment I installed Hyper-V Integration Services (Version 6.3.9600.16384). Then I shutdown the VM, removed the Legacy network adapter and added a "normal" network adapter and started the machine again. I noticed that the network-connection is down.

When I check the properties it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I tried to uninstall the Adapter, I tried to remove the adapter and add a new one - no change. Even I redeployed the VM completely new...same problem...

Does anyone know this issue?

VHD file placement on an iSCSI SAN.

I am wondering about VHD file placement when creating a virtual machine. I had created my 3 VHD OS files on the SAN itself and then created and added Pass Through disks to the virtual machines once I logged into each vm. Recently I was told that I should have created the vhd files on the physical host and then mapped the Pass Though disks on the SAN to each vm. Is that the correct way to do this? I thought the pupose of the SAN was to move your virtuals including the OS VHD files onto the SAN itself? Am I missing the point or am I being given bad information?

Thanks

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V extend CSV

Hi Experts!

Here is my problem: I have 2 CSVs in my hyper-v cluster: 1 is 1TB and other one is 500GB.

The 500GB we decided to add more 500GB, completing 1TB. The data center extended the lun to 1TB and I ran in the command prompt the steps (my hyper-v servers are core):

1) Connect per RDP to current CSV owner
2) run diskpart from Command Prompt
  2.1) rescan
  2.2) list volume
  2.3) select volume ###
  2.4) extend
2.5) list volume (size should be extended to the max capacity)

Now the diskpart shows me the correct size, but the cluster manager does not (look the attachments).

Is there anything else I need to do?
