Migrated VM's & VM's created in Failover Cluster Manager aren't appearing in Hyper-V Virtual Machine Manager

Hi All,

got a real weird one, hoping someone can shed some light.

I have a new Server 2019 cluster and I've been busy moving existing VM's to it and creating new one's too.

I've discovered however that some of the VM's that I've moved and a few of the later one's that I've created aren't appearing in Hyper-V virtual machine manager console.

To be clear they do appear in the roles section of Failover Cluster Manager and I can connect to them and they function as expected.

I've checked on both the physical host servers and on my PC and the same is true.... anyone got any ideas why ?

Best regards.

Paul.

Turning on VM causes wireless packet lost with the host machine

Hello

I am running Hyper-V on Windows 10 Intel NUC.  I have about 10 VMs.  I'm using the wireless NIC on the NUC as the "shared" network interface with the VMs.

I have to recently created VM's that when I turn them on... I get packet loss with the host.  Meaning if I do a continuous ping to the host (NUC) … every few pings will drop.  ITs a pain because I RDP to my NUC soley to administer it.  Too far to run cable.

ANyways when I turn off these VM's then network is back to normal!  What gives?

I have 8 other VMs running that did not cause this issues.  Those VM's I noticed are "Configuration 8.0 or 8.3"  .  The 2 VM's that causes network issues with the host is "Configuration 9".

Host NIC drivers are up to date.

Please help!

Hello

I'm back with a new profile, I want to know if there is a tool to manage the hyper-v  machines in an intuitive way like Vmware without configure RDP mode, and I want to know where I can publish my contribution if I make a similar tool free of course, thanks for clearing me up I didn't know or apply.

New-VM with vhdx drives from Exported App server

I want to deploy the same VM build (App server with IIS, LOB app, database) repeatedly to multiple customer H-V hosts with each VM having a different BiosIDs so the OS (Server 2019) can be licensed/activated.

Proposed solution:

Export a "gold" build, create a New-VM with the same settings, then attach vhdx drives from the Export.

As far as I know, this is the only way to get a different BiosID (sysprep wreaks havoc with the build).

The LOB app in question licenses independently from the BiosID, but other utilities on the server may not.  Aside from that caveat, are there any pitfalls in cloning a VM like this?

Maximum size of VHDX file i can replicate.

Hi All,

I'm going to consolidate few file servers in one VM. Total size of VM should hit around 8-9TB. So my replication topology is following.

Primary and Replica servers are in same Subnet, Extended Replica server is in DR site (100mbps internal speed).

am i going to have any issues with replication, first of all from primary to replica and second from replica to extended replica server?

I've never gone above 2TB VM replication before.

Please advise.

domain.local in Active directory

I have windows 2008 r2 DC with internal DNS namespace of domain.local in Active directory. If install and promote DC with win 2019 server would it accept the internal DC with domain.local or it will break. It seemed to work when I tested the upgrade on internal lab with no internet connection. Hopefully, it would be the same when it is connected external

Failed to Realize

I got a Windows Server 2019 environment with a windows share hosted on a lenovo emc px12-450r nas.  Whenever I try and create a virtual machine directly on the nas, i get the error Failed to create virtual machine, failed to realize.  However, if I make the virtual machine on the local host it works perfectly fine.

I set up a service account on the nas with a matching service account on the host, but that didn't seem to help.  I tried creating the machines via unc path and mapped drives which resulted in the same

Any advise would be appreciated.

Move VMs from one cluster to another cluster in different forest and domain

Hi all

I am working on a project with special requirement and need suggestions on how to achieve it.

Following is current configuration

Hyper-V Infrastructure A

  1. Domain:aa.co
  2. No of Hyper-V hosts: 3
  3. Failover Cluster Configured for VMs: Yes
  4. No of VMs: 20
  5. Networks:Management NW(192.168.2.0), iSCSI NW(192.168.1.0), Cluster Live Migration NW ( 172.18.1.0), Cluster NW (172.18.2.0)
  6. SCVMM Installed: Yes, running as Virtual Machine
  7. Domain Controllers : 1 Physical , 2 Virtual Machine
  8. DC OS Version : Windows Server 2012 R2
  9. Hyper-V Host OS Version : Windows Server 2012 R2 (GUI)
  10. Storage Type : iSCSI ( Dell EMC)

Hyper-V Infrastructure B

  1. Domain:bb.co
  2. No of Hyper-V hosts: 3
  3. Failover Cluster Configured for VMs : Yes
  4. No of VMs: 10
  5. Networks: Management NW(192.168.3.0),iSCSI NW(192.168.1.0), Cluster Live Migration NW (172.16.1.0), Cluster NW (172.16.2.0)
  6. SCVMM Installed: Yes, running as Virtual Machine
  7. Domain Controllers: 1 Physical, 2 Virtual Machines
  8. DC OS Version : Windows Server 2016
  9. Hyper-V Host OS Version : Windows Server 2016 Data Center (Core)
  10. Storage Type : iSCSI ( Pure Storage)

Additional Information

  • Hyper-V hosts in both infrastructure has access to Storage Network
  • Hyper-V hosts in aa.co domain can reach Hyper-V hosts in bb.co
  • Hosts in both domains have similar number of NICs ( NIC teaming is also configured). Hosts in bb.co have more capacity in terms of CPU, RAM and Storage
  • All hosts are in one rack, connected to same switch stack, external traffic is routed by one firewall.

Requirement

  • Move all VMs from aa.co domain / cluster to bb.co domain / cluster in new Hyper-V infrastructure. The reason is that aa.co infrastructure is old and had couple of hardware parts failure.
  • They don't want two domains to talk to each other but consolidate everything in one Hyper-V infrastructure for simplicity and management purpose. one domain (aa.co) will be for internal purpose and (bb.co) for external purpose.

Questions

  • What do I need to do in bb.co Hyper-V Cluster in terms of physical and virtual network in order to facilitate aa.co Hyper-V VMs to continue communication in same subnet after move. The goal is not to change anything on subnet level since this is production network and have live internal clients connected to DC and other applications.
  • What method of Hyper-V migration I should use in this scenario ?
  • Do I need to configure anything on VMM in both cluster ? Is there any other consideration I should undertake since all VMs are managed by VMM in both infrastructure ?

I have worked with Hyper-V in limited scale such as same domain, replication, export and import of VMS etc. This is new large scale migration for me and would like to explorer my options and maintain best practice as well.

Your suggestions and ideas are appreciated.

Greetings, all.

I'm currently trying to create a production checkpoint on a VM running WS2019. Get the error message:

"An error occurred while attempting to checkpoint the selected Virtual Machine

Taking a checkpoint failed

The operation is not supported"

What could have caused this? Thanks for any info on the matter. Have a good one.

Hyper-V Replication - AVHDX files on VHDX files NOT getting replicated

$

I have a problem with multiple VMs and hyper-V replication, primarily on VMs with large files hosting backups or database servers with drives that see many changes like SQL Server TempDB. If the VM has hard drives I know are too large or get too many changes to support replication I do NOT include them (including VHDXs hosting paging files). However it appears Hyper-V STILL creates AVHDX differencing files on these VHDX files that are NOT part of replication and if the expected great number of changes take place, AVHDX files get large, and my host hard drives run out of space.

How do I get Windows to NOT create AVHDX files on VHDX files NOT included in replication to avoid this?

Virtual Partitions

Hello!

So I currently have a virtual windows 2012 R2 server and the VHD that holds configuration as well the boot files is about to run out of space, is there anyway to make a new partition and copy the current setup of the server to a new VHD to avoid running out space and then setting that new VHD to take the place of the old one?

Thanks!

How to Get/Set VM Priorities

$

All the vmwp.exe are VM's running and all of them are associated with a PID and User Name. I want to write small code in C++ to do:

  • Get process property of all processes having the name vmwp.exe -  Please suggest a regular api or PowerShell call.
  • I will assume the returned structure will have PID, Status and User Name.
  • Then I need a call to get the VM name and its associated GUID - Please suggest a regular api or PowerShell call
  • Now I have GUID-VM and GUID-User Name-PID.
  • With this association I will be able Get and Set Priorities for VM using Set/GetPriority(PID) calls
  • On the other hand if there is a single call to Get/Set Priorities for a VM I will take that, that would be too good
  • I Googled a lot but could not get the single call so thought will do this round about.
  • Get-VM, get-VMProcessor there are about 30 calls none of them listed the GUID. I feel there might be a wmi call...

Hello,

I want to create a new Hyper-V virtual machine.

This "machine" should only use the windows 10 installed on my windows-to-go USB stick.

Is this possible?

I upgraded my hyper v host from 2012r2 to 2019.  All my vms powered on and ran fine.

Two days later I used Update-VMVersion [computername] and moved my vm from version 5.0 to 9.0.

Now when I try to boot it, i get this error:

Failed to start.  Failed to get security info.

Host and VM addressing on /30 network

$

I am trying to get my head around how host and VM addressing can work when using a /30 network.

The interface on the router is /30 (say 10.1.1.1/30).  The VM needs to communicate with the router, and I don’t think NAT is an option, so seemingly the interface on the VM must be 10.1.1.2/30.  This leaves no spare addresses on the subnet.

This being the case, how do I address the physical interface on the HyperV host and configure the virtual switch(es) to allow transparent communication between the VM and the router?
