Lost Pass-Through Disks After Planned Shutdown

I am setting up a home server for my father who has, up until this point in time, clung to the Windows Server 2003-based Windows Home Server 1.0 product.  The box I'm using is an AMD A8 based machine with an ASUS AMD A88X based motherboard.  I'm running Hyper-V Server 2019 as the host OS and I have a single VM running Windows Server 2019 Essentials.

The drive configuration is as follows:

60GB SSD - OS drive for Hyper-V Server 2019

256GB SSD - VMs drive for Hyper-V VM (currently it's only housing the aforementioned VM with Windows Server 2019 Essentials)

4TB HDD - One of four HDDs being used as pass-through disks for the WIndows Server 2019 Essentials VM

4TB HDD - "

6TB HDD - "

4TB HDD - "

As stated above, I was using the four hard drives as pass-through disks for the Server 2019 Essentials VM.  I was going to create a storage spaces drive pool from them on which my father would serve files to his other computers and then slowly add or remove drives as he saw fit.

Now for the problem: Everything was running well.  I had finished setting up everything and so I shut down the VM and then the host in preparation to move it to where it would operate most of the time.  Nothing unusual happened during any of this.

When I went to turn on the host this morning, it powered on just fine, but my Server 2019 Essentials VM failed to start.  I have no indication as to why it won't start other than the fact that neither the host, nor Hyper-V Manager, nor Windows Admin Center will recognize the four hard drives.  It's like they vanished.  The BIOS of the box sees them just fine and I have verified that they're still connected.  But nothing within Hyper-V Server 2019 itself nor any console connected to it can see it.  DiskPart only sees the two SSDs and I've even tried changing the SAN policy to Online with no avail.

Any advice in getting my drives back up and running (and hopefully the Windows Server 2019 Essentials VM with it) would be seriously appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

Server 2012 VM won't boot after RAID array failure

We've got a Dell R710 running Server 2012 with Hyper-V that had two disks go bad last week. Luckily we run RAID 6, so it just needed a rebuild after the drives were replaced.

This server runs a fileserver inside a VM. The VM will no longer boot after the rebuild. It runs the "Hyper-V Please Wait..." screen, then just stops with a black screen. I tried pinging the IP address of the VM but it's unreachable, so it doesn't seem to simply be a display error.

I tried creating a second VM using the same parameters, with the VHDX file as the disk, but it still wouldn't boot. So I mounted the Server 2012 DVD ISO to the VM so I could run the recovery environment and try some repairs:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\windows - says that it can't repair some of the corrupted files.

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth - seemed to work ok, no warnings or errors.

chkdsk /f C: - took almost two days (the VM is 8TB and has millions of tiny files), and said it fixed a number of errors.

Unfortunately, none of those fixed the issue, and the VM still doesn't boot. I looked in Event Viewer at all the Hyper-V logs, but there are no related warnings or errors to help me further diagnose.

I'm now restoring a backup of the VM, hopefully that backup will boot properly. The restore operation will take a while due to the size of the VHDX, so while I'm waiting I figured I'd ask if there's anything else I can try.

Thanks!

Setting up "host-only adapter" equivalent

Quick background to help explain the situation, I'm a cybersecurity student and i'm used to using virtualbox to learn the ins and outs of pen testing, we using kali and vulnerable OSs like Metasploitable to simulate attacks, this is what I'm trying to set up on hyper-v.

when you're using VMware or Virtual Box you have the option to setup a host-only adapter https://imgur.com/a/TVeZbd3 (screenshot host-adapter in VB), this allows VMs to communicate with each other and access the internet while being isolated from your host computer, this is obviously something you want to do when dealing with vulnerable OS's, u dont what them to create an opening to your host computer or internal network while while simulating pen testing.

I've tired for hours to set and "host-only" equivalent on hyper-v to avail... Any ideas? is this even possible to achieve with hyper-v?

Kind Regards, and thank you in advance for your time.

Hyper-v 2016 Core configuration for replica

I have a situation here.

HOST01 - Windows 2016 Hyper-v GUI mode, joined to the domain and has 2 VM's - existing

HOST02 - Windows 2016 Hyper-v Core mode- new to replicate the VM's from HOST01

When i join the HOST02 to the domain, i cannot even manage the server from my laptop using Hyper-v manager. So its standalone.

If its standalone, i can connect from my laptop and also from HOST01 Hyper-v manager. Now the problem is when i try to configure replication from HOST01 to HOST02 its not connecting to HOST02 with kerberos error.

Error comes as.

Hyper-v failed to enable replication

hyper-v failed to authentocate using kerberos authentication

the specified target is unknown or unreachable (0x80090303)

I can't backup my VM on a remote shared windows folder

Hello!

Introduction that you might want to skip:

I have recently taken a deep dive into the world of virtualization, starting with VirtualBox and now trying the bare-metal hypervisors.

I am currently evaluating 3 major hypervisors with generous free features: XCP-NG, Hyper-V Server 2019, ESXi.

I have not evaluated ESXi properly yet, because it seemed to have the most limitations on its free version. But I have seen it a bit in action in my workplace.

Getting closer to the question:

So, I am seriously considering to use Hyper-V. I could list here the things that I like, on it or around it  (PowerShell, Windows Admin Center, Remote Desktop Connection into the VM even when it is a Linux, etc), but that  might be boring.

But there is a serious problem with Hyper-V that makes me hesitant: it is the backups.

I have used XCP-NG previously, together with the free Xen Orchestra (XO) (built from sources) and the backups there where a piece of cake. I could take a VM from XO and back it up on a windows shared folder. And not only that, but I could also have it compressed automatically! And not only that, but I could schedule backups from the GUI and have them executed automatically (at least, assuming that the XO VM is running 24/7 -- as far as my understanding goes)! I cannot tell you how much I hate the UI of XO, but this feature was really amazing.

Then I tried to do the same with Hyper-V Server 2019. Backing up (a.k.a. exporting) on the host (or should I call it the "management VM?") file-system seemed to work (I have the impression that the backup was larger than I expected though, but anyway). But when I tried to back up in a shared windows folder, on a remote PC, it seemed almost impossible. First, the UI in Windows Admin Center was not handling other locations, except for the C: drive. Trying to specify a network path made it fail. Then I thought to map the network folder to a drive. But again, WAC would not accept that drive, even though the host had access to it! Then I thought to try from PowerShell. Using the `Export-VM` commandlet, the best I could achieve was to trigger errors related to CredSSP. After googling a bit, I found ways to enable CredSSP on both machines, but the security warnings made me have second thoughts. Then I thought that I could disable authentication altogether in my shared folder, hoping that there would be no need for any credential considerations from the part of the two OSes. But that didn't help either. Again, I got CredSSP errors.

I have read somewhere about the possibility to switch the winrm to use HTTP or HTTPS, in order to avoid these problems, but then new problems arise: I would either have to lower the security of my computers or deal with internal CAs and certificates. And not even then I am totally certain that I will find a good solution. Maybe using a domain controller would solve the problem too, but that is (again) extra complexity. It is my home server we are talking about here, not some big enterprise. I might setup a Domain Controller as a workshop, but managing an extra DC VM, is not something I like.

The question(s):

1) Is there a way to backup a VM in a shared network folder, without enabling CredSSP or doing other things that will either lower the security of my PCs or have consequences unknown to me?
2) Why can't hyper-v do a backup in a mapped network drive?
3) Is there any plan to add a feature for backups on network folders, preferably with the option to compress data? Defining schedules would be great too, but I guess I am asking too much on that... But backing up is a vital to any virtualization setup and having to do it in the drive of the host seems like a weird restriction.

Maybe I could programatically move the backup folder to a remote PC after the VM exporting is done. But then a new set of problems arise. I have to determine how is the backup named on the disk. And from what I can see, the`Export-VM` command does not return anything back. Plus, I would have to stress more, a drive that is already under a lot of stress from multiple running VMs. Not to mention that I tend to fill my drives at 90%, making it pretty tight for any room for backups... Also, if the drive is an SSD, you are essentially killing its long life for storing some data that were not supposed to be there to begin with.

I hope there is nothing obvious that I have missed in my options.

It would be great to have a feature like this, but I understand that as a company you promote Azure and its backups, and also promote your partners that may provide backup products that are complementary to what Hyper-V offers out-of-the-box.

But anyhow, I thought to ask. :)

Connecting to a Hyper-V instance remotely

I have my Hyper-V instances running on my server computer that I RDP into that from my main PC. How can I connect to just the Hyper-V instance from my main PC? I have all Hyper-V features installed on both my PC and server, but the PC one only finds itself as local computer and when I type the server's name it is not recognized.

dears,

i'm in the process of migrating my servers from a standalone hyperv to a new hyperv cluster.

i migrated about 20 vms and all was wroking good.

i recently migrated my domain controller and i faced issues on the cluster. the time has changed so i reverted back.

can you please advise on migrating domain controllers?

best regards

HyperV 2019 - "Host processor features mask" documentation

$

Hi,

We have a few Xeon E5 v2 and we are trying to move the VMs to our newer Dell R640 Xeon Skylake (Gold 6134), but we are unable to do it because it keeps complaining about lack of processors features on the Skylake ones.

I tried everything that was on my hand, activating/deactivating options on BIOS, or disabling all the Spectre/Meltdowns on the source server, but migration could not be done.

The only way to migrate between E5v2 -> XeonSP is to enable the VM Compatibility flag on the VM but we are losing too much performance there (AES-NI are used). And it's my understanding that VM compatibility doesn't modifies the behaviour about Spectre family of mitigations.

Anyway, I found that there is a mask to 1 in the Xeon E5v2, v3, and Xeon-D that I have available but all the Skylakes have it to 0, the 55th bit on the mask. As per Intel docs (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/manuals/64-ia-32-architectures-software-developer-instruction-set-reference-manual-325383.pdf) this seems to state that MMX is not available on the Xeon SP, but should be there. But as if I change the kind of Hypervisor (core vs classic) the mask is changed, perhaps it's Windows that disables MMX? (it's a mask, not a feature flag...)

But if I look at a VM on the Skylakes, coreinfo reports MMX, so perhaps it's another thing.

For reference, this is the processor feature mask that I have on various servers (you can see it at Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Hypervisor/Admin log)

E5-2660v2:  0x1085F04041F7819F

E5-2623v3:  0x1085F840FFF7859F

XeonD1541: 0x1080F87FFFF7859F

Xeon Gold:   0x1005F9FFFFF7859F

I'd prefer to convert the 3rd nibble to 0 than change it to 8 as there are too many production VMs at the Skylake hosts, but well, if we can know what that bit means, perhaps we could decide based on what's better for our use-case.

So the question is:

1) Is there any documentation about the "Host processor features mask" that I was unable to find?

2) After knowing what this means, how can I modify the mask?

Thanks in advance

Can I delete a VM from Hyper-V but not delete the XML files?

Howdy,

We like to remove old VMs in steps.  We power off VMs and let them sit in case we need to turn them back on for something.  However, when we delete the VM from HPV, it also deletes the associated XML files which means we can't reimport the VM back if something comes up.   Is there any way to configure Hyper-V Manager to remove the VM from the console but not deletethe XML files from disk?  Or to prompt for deletion?

Once we delete the VM, we are 99.9% sure we won't need it any more but it has come up at least once or twice where we ended up having to create a new VM pointed at the old VHDX files to get some data we needed so just thought I'd ask.

Thanks

Cannot update integration services

Hi,

I'm using Hyper-V Server on Windows Server 2012 R2, and Guest OS Windows Server 2012 R2, I see at the bottom that update of integration services is required. So in Guest OS inserted media and started installation, I get information that "previous installation of hyper-v has been detected 6.3.9600.18907..." Installed rebooted Guest OS, but after that I see at the bottom of Hyper-V server that update is required, even if I refresh everything.

How could I troubleshoot this issue, is there any logs?

I have a problem. Changes were done to the content of a vhdx by the guest os and important files are damaged. Can I undo the latest changes using the .rct file?

In other words: Does A .rct file only consist of "Off new_data" or does it contain "Offset new_data old_data" ?

VHDX is not supported in operating systems earlier than Windows Server 2012

I converted VHD to VHDX with Windows Server 2008 inside on a test machine and it successfully booted.

Inside VM itself I didn't notice any fails or errors after conversion.

As far as I know an OS inside a VM and a VM itself do not care about virtual disk type so it is not related to a guest OS.

At the same time Windows Server 2008 hypervisor doesn't give an option to create a VHDX so it is not related to a host OS.

Just out of curiosity what "This format is not supported in operating systems earlier than Windows Server 2012." is related to?

Set guest VM (Ubuntu 18.04) IP address from Hyper-V host

I'm using Hyper-V servers 2012 R2 and Server 2016 Datacenter, and i'm using this script to set IP to VMs https://www.ravichaganti.com/blog/set-or-inject-guest-network-configuration-from-hyper-v-host-windows-server-2012/

This works perfectly for Windows, Ubuntu16,Centos6/7/8 but fails for Ubuntu 18.

Integration service installed as per this guide:https://vroomtech.io/hyper-v-linux-integration-service-on-ubuntu-16-04-lts/

I can get Ubuntu VM IP by Powershell, current IP is seen from Hyper-V console.

Is there any way to set IP through Powershell for Ubuntu 18 ?
