Cannot see anymore the virtual hard disk process

$

Dear all,

We use one Hyper-V server on Windows Server 2016 to host some virtual machines. We need a virtual machine which requires:

-16GB RAM

-2TB of disk

After doing some researches on the Internet, I finally created a VHDX file and I configured the size for 2 TB. I created it through Hyper-V Manager on my client computer connected to the remote Hyper-V server.

Although it took forever to create the vhdx file, I suddenly plug off my cable without thinking about it (damn!). Now, I cannot see the virtual hard disk process anymore (and I cannot see if it is finished or not, even if it says the file is currently in use when I try to delete my vhdx).

Do you have any solutions so that I can see again the process? If not, a way to cancel it and recreates it (during the night this time, because it takes forever and it slows down the other virtual machines)? The host hyper-V is in production.

Regards,

Lucas

vmconnect with basic authentication and https/TLS?

Actually the title already expresses the essence. I would like to use vmconnect to connect to virtual machines on a different host and as the client is not necessarily a domain member or using the same identities, I would like to enable basic authentication. I can enable basic authentication using gpedit, however it clearly warns that when using http the password is sent unencrypted. I would like to mitigate this by forcing any winrm/winrs/vmconnect connection to be encrypted using https, however I haven´t found any command line option to vmconnect or configuration setting that allows me to enforce that. Is this really impossible or have I just not been digging deep enough??
Thanks & Best regards, Joachim

Missing Account NT Virtual machine\Virtual Machines after Planned Fail Over

$

I have a two Host servers (2012r2) ONYX, SmartGateway.  Onyx hosted a "MAIL" as a VM which replicated to SmarterGateway.  During our planned downtime over the weekend I did a "Planned Failover" from ONYX to SmarterGateway.  Afterwards I reversed the replication.  I failed to notice that replication did not work.  Today when thinking about the setup I removed the replication and pointed it towards our offsite replication Host across campus (same subnet) and discovered that it would not replicate.  Would not checkpoint either.  Googled errors.  Turns out permissions are screwed.  Read all of those.  HOW DO I ADD the Special user group NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\Virtual Machines.  Yes the local group policy is defined to allow it to Log On as a Service.  There is not a Domain Group Policy defined.  Nothing seems to let me fix this.  This is our production email server.  I really can't just turn it off and uninstall Hyper-V, reboot, reinstall and then add the Virtual Machine back.  Is there any way to fix this short of another couple hours of downtime?  Also note, the VM is running and doing it's job.  Scared of what will happen if I have to restart it or shut it down.

Win 2016 Hyper-V - VM has no internet connection

Hi All,

I am struggling to properly configure network on my HyperV host and VM. The server is connected to the internet (wired connection). Static IP's + GW + DNS configured on both (server,VM). VM is not able to reach the internet.

My environment:

  • fresh Win2016 DC installation with Hyper-V enable, running on lenovo x3550 m4 (4 eth ports), 1 physical port connected to switch (to internet), this interface #4 has only vSwitch feature enabled. On the vSwitch is IP4 set correctly. Can reach this server also via VPN, can ping GW and 8.8.8.8...
  • fresh Win2016 Standard as VM, same IP4 config as on the server (only IP's are different). This VM cannot reach the internet ,cannot ping 8.8.8.8, but I can reach the machine via VPN and can ping GW. Also connection like RDP is working between host and VM.

I've already tried to reinstall eth drivers, remove and create new vswitch, install new VM, turn off fw, but nothing helped.

GOAL: to share physical adapter with VM's, use the same subnet and reach the internet

2012 R2 bitlocker for fixed drives auto unlock needs to be enabled

I have several windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers using vhdx. I need to encrypt the fixed drives only with auto-unlock enabled. I got the drive encrypted, restarted, then I try to enable auto-unlock and I get the error below:

The operating system drive is not protected by BitLocker Drive Encryption

The C: does not require encryption.
How can I make this work properly for servers without encrypting the C:?

If the C: Drive needs to be encrypted can this be done on a Hyper-V 2012 R2 VM using a .vhdx?

Below is the GPO I have configured, the require setting has been changed to allow to match the others. (if that helps)

Achieving Basic/Moderate Graphics Performance on Win 10 Ent Hyper-V with Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop

I've recently been experimenting with Win 10 Enterprize Hyper-V as Host of a Ubuntu Desktop 18.04. I don't need great video performance, but would like to get to the point where windows draw without my being able to see them rendered top to bottom over 1/4 second or so. And more importantly, I'd like to get the mouse to be reasonably responsive. Currently, it is easy to mis-click because of laggy feedback on where the cursor is. Finally, the resolution is stuck at 1152 x 864... Would like to use my display's native resolution.

In short, it is acting like there is no driver installed. There must be a driver for the virtual graphics, no?

This is a fairly clean Win 10 Enterprise install, where I've simply turned on Hyper-V. To install Ubuntu, I downloaded the current 18.04 desktop .iso. I created a 1TB virtual drive and installed using the wizard. I have used the software settings panel to look for missing drivers, etc, with no luck.

The physical hardware is a 6th gen Intel i3 with an AMD Radeon RX 470. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello,

How to redirect the USB Dongle from Hyper-V 2016 Host to it's Virtual Machine ? The Host is running with Microsoft 2016 Data Center and it's virtual Machines are Windows 2016 Standard. Please suggest the possible solutions with Windows to redirect the USB devices (Dongles, other devices) from the 2016 Host Server to it's Virtual Machine (Server 2016 standard).

HyperV NAT port fowarding

Recently I've had to create a VM which runs a process that operates on a a few set port numbers. I must connect to that VM from my local machine just for simple demo purposes. Doing this obviously requires port forwarding between my local machine and the VM which is running so I can open the frontend application.

Doing this from within VirutalBox is easier as it has some simple port forwarding options within settings on the VM itself inside the network section.

Why is it that port forwarding is not done in the same way and you must separately use PowerShell to achieve this? It should not be too tricky to add an option for this. Suppose I am asking for a RFE. On the latest Windows 10 enterprise OS.

Took me some time to figure this out but in PowerShell can be done like this (after you manually create internal only switch):

New-NetIPAddress -IPAddress <<switch ADDR>> -PrefixLength <<eg, 23>> -InterfaceIndex 7

netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenport=<<portnum>> connectaddress=<<switch ADDR>> connectport=<<portnum>> protocol=tcp

On the subject can think of a few minor improvements from the front-end viewpoint. Some of the docs I find are not the clearest but do help. It seems quite a few paths can be taken to achieve this request but the simplest is this method IMO.

hyper v replication on different physical machines

Good morning everyone! New to the forum and new to hyper v. I tried searching through the forums and could not find a definite answer to my question. Can hyper v's be moved from one model physical machine to a different model physical machine. I'm testing hyper v replication on 2 dell t5500 workstations and want to move the  hyper v's to 2 dell poweredge r610's. Is this possible?

NIC Appears Disconnected on Hyper-V Start

$

Hello,

Can anybody guide me as to why this may be happening? Hyper-V 2012R2 with Server 2012 Guest, issue started 2 weeks ago.

When Hyper-V guest starts up, the NIC appears disconnected @ the logon screen, it takes a long time to log in as if there was a DNS problem, but I can access the server remotely.

After logging in, I can ping IP's and resolve DNS names. NSLOOKUP works perfectly fine.

Sometimes, the NIC card looks normal on the icon tray and other times it has the exclamation mark that appears on hosts with no Internet access even though I have ping and resolve DNS names.

The problem is that this is an Exchange server, so it prevents powershell from working properly. I have to restart several times sometimes in order for powershell to work.

I have run SFC Scan, I have reimaged the OS using DISM and I have removed and re-added the Hyper-V NIC, I have installed a legacy Hyper-V NIC and I have moved the guest to another Hyper-V host, but issue persists.

Every few days, mail flow and powershell stop working and I believe it's a result of the NIC. Its as if DNS does not work but DNS is in fact workin!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated..

Hyper-V Replica Server - Reverse Replication

Hi,

We have Hyper-V 2012 Environment with Hyper-V Replica in place at branch office. Everything was working fine on Primary Server until Hardware fault occurred and have to failover the VM from Replica Server.

Now the Primary Server is up again and but one of my engineer mistakenly removed the Replication from Primary Server and if Reserve Replication (from Replica) is started then it starts send to initial replication of 236 GB's.

Till then we will not be able to move back VM from DR to Primary.

Is there any work around to fix on urgent basis.

Nested Virtualization Hyper-V (VDI) on Vmware Virtualization PXE boot VDI VM.

Dear all,

I have a Hyper-V VDI that is hosted on a VMWARE ESX server (nested virtualization). Now I want to install my first VM via PXE boot but that does not work.

VM gets his IP address from the DHCP server but does not go to the TFTP boot that is hosted on SCCM.

I got the following Error : PXE-E11: ARP Timeout

This has something to do with a ARP request but that got no answer. This is also the behavior that I see with Wireshark installed on the Hyper-V machine. I See 4 times a ARP request but got no answer back.

  • PXE boot works directly on the Vmware environment
  • Promiscuous mode is enabled on the hyper-v  NIC on the windows VDI VM.
  • VM has a legacy network adaptor
  • There is a Virtual switch connected to the NIC that is in promiscuous mode.
  • DHCP server have option : 66 and 67 configured.

What can I check or how can I solved this ?

Reverse replication fails when doing a planned failover

$

Just thought i'd pop my solution up here so it can populate in Google.

For anyone who's using certificate based authentication with hosts on a workgroup.

Scenario

When doing a planned failover with reverse enabled you find it fails. But, you're able to reverse the replication manually from the remote server once you've failed it over.

Assuming you're able to ping the hosts and youve correctly set up firewall rules etc and are able to resolve host name to IP address and replication is working normally.

Resolution

Open powershell and run the following command from the primary server:

set-item WSMan:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts -Value 'REPLICAHOSTNAME' -force

REPLICAHOSTNAME is your other host. You will need to perform the command the otherway around so you can reverse both ways.

To confirm this worked you can type:

get-item WSMan:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts

Thanks.

Virtual Machine (Server 2019) loading much faster after choosing Generation 1

$

Hello,

I cannot answer myself this "phenomen" I encountered. Until today I used Generation 2 for my virtual machines (Windows 10, Windows Server 2019). Now I tried a new virtual machine (Windows Server 2019) picking Generation 1 in the Assistent for new virtual machine and I immediately noticed that it was much faster. The installation process and in general the boot process.

Can anyone tell me why??? I thought that Generation 2 is the right choice because I have a host running with UEFI.

Thank You for your replies
