Can you connect a virtual machine to an external Wi-Fi router?

$

I’m trying to connect a windows 10 virtual machine to an external Wi-Fi router.

So I have:

1)     A router connected to the internet which is connected via Wi-Fi to my host windows 10 machine. The host machine is running Hyper-V with a virtual machine that is running windows 10. The virtual machine is connected through a virtual switch.

2)     I have a separate router that is NOT connected to the internet.

Is it possible to connect the virtual machine to the second router (the one with NO internet access)?

When in the virtual machine, I click on the icon in the bottom right hand corner to view available Wi-Fi access point there is none. If I’m on my host machine I can see the available Wi-Fi access point.

Replication Test Failover Domain issues.

Hey Technet, we're a contractor company working under a much larger company, and we're tasked with having a backup site with Hyper-V replication.

Currently we have backups getting pushed every 15 minutes to our system. Paranoid people that we are, we prefer to spool up and run all the replications daily to make sure they are functioning. This includes running applications and checking on files in the database etc. The issue we are running into is that the domain controllers are being turned off on our AD replications by the Hyper V console. The reason why seems to be referenced in an article by Bill Mathers titled: "Support for using Hyper-V Replica for virtualized domain controllers"  (Unfortunately I can link anything yet)

It seems to be a microsoft safety feature to prevent conflicts, but we're hoping there is a work around for this. Currently we are running Test-Failovers on all the VMs and when we do we'll often have to run off Cached Credentials. Sometimes we get "No logon services". Its impeding our process of running a test lab under failover conditions.

Is there a way we can still complete our daily tests with this method while having functional test failover DCs?

Move vm configuration file to csv

We have a hyperv cluster. We use csv and not csv disks.

A vm has this config:

- Drive C on a .vhdx on disk1 (not csv). Also, config file is kn this disk1

- Drive D on a .vhdx on disk1

- Drive E on a passtrough disk2

- Drive F on a passtrough disk3

Sometimes we have issues on live migrations. This url https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831435(v=ws.11).aspx says....

Physical disks that are directly attached to a virtual machine (pass-through disks) are supported when all of the following conditions are met:

  • The virtual machine configured with one or more physical disks is running on a Hyper-V failover cluster.
  • The virtual machine configuration file is hosted on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV).
  • The physical disks are configured as a storage disk resource under control of the failover cluster and are properly configured as a dependent resource for the virtual machine.

So, I need to move vm config file to a csv disk...what is the best option?

Time Loop - how did this even work for at least a year?

Hi,

not sure where to post this really so i've posted it here because of trying to configure time for existing virtual domain controllers

so, we have the following setup for how time works:

Server1 is a virtual domain controller, it gets its time from the integration components in hyper-v

Server2 is the hyper-v host, it gets its time from Server3

Server3 is a physical domain controller, it gets its time from Server1

The above was all shown using w32tm /query /source on each server

This causes a loop of dependencies, but out of curiosity - how on earth did my time not drift by hours/days/weeks in this setup - its been running for at least a year like this, its a closed loop. Neither Server1 or Server3 are the PDC, that's actually another domain controller not included in the above. Can anyone shed any light on this? it's no big deal, my time was only out by like 2 minutes but im puzzled by how it would be only 2 minutes because server1 would have accumulated some clock skew.

Cheers

Steve

Dear Friends,

Please as I want to seek technical advice/help I have a question if we will convert physical computer machine to VM virtual machine my question after converted  it to VM CPU and bios ID will be identical of VM  as physical computer has or it will be different as we have situation to protect our developed software for illegal copy as it can be done by convert physical computer into virtual machine, I am seeking for any unique identity of computer which will be not remain same after converting pc into vm.

for further details following URL

Mount Server 2012R2 VHDx in Server 2016

Hi All

I am having issues mounting Server2012R2 VHDx files with PowerShell. When I try and mount the VHDx files I get the error

Mount-VHD : The Hyper-V Management Tools could not access an expected WMI class on computer xxxx

This may indicate that the Hyper-V Platform is not installed on the computer or that the version of the Hyper-V Platform is incompatible with these management tools.

I can however mount the images via Explorer.

Hyper-V Module for Windows PowerShell is installed ( As well as all other management tools)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Migrating from XenServer 7.0 to Hyper-V 2016 Server

$

Hi,

Over the last week or so I've been trying to get Windows VMs migrated from XenServer 7.0 to Hyper-V 2016 Server.

I have tried so many different methods such as:

  • Exporting to XVA format, then converting to OVF and extracting the VHD for attaching to a Hyper-V VM
  • Using disk2vhd on the live VM for the same
  • Running VMware vCenter Converter on the live VM
  • Starwind and other tools for converting exported VM formats to Hyper-V formats
  • And finally, Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 3.1

I'm sure there are other methods I've tried, too, but without success. Usually, what happens with basic disk conversions is that Windows starts to boot (the logo displays), and then blue-screens with 'SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED'

Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 3.1 gets to 100% on the 'Convert disk(s)' stage, then fails with 'The object invoked has disconnected from its clients. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010108 (RPC_E_DISCONNECTED))'. The firewall is completely disabled on the client and server as I had earlier issues, and BITS is installed on the server.

In terms of the versions of Windows I've tried to migrate, I've used Windows Server 2012 and Windows 10 Pro, both with the same results.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Need to Enable Internet Access to the HyperV vm's in Internal Network

I am using Hyper-V server core to spawn two VMs. I have External Switch connected to a physical interface.

Is it possible to route my traffic from my Internal network to the External and vice versa?

If not, what are other ways I ensure my VMs to access the  internet.

10Gb external port mirroring throughput

I am doing some testing on using Hyper-V to do network monitoring, this monitoring involves a 10Gb network card configured as the source and a virtual machine as the distination to relay ALL the external traffic (utilising promiscuous mode) to the VM.

The equipment used is a HP Proliant DL360p Gen 9 with a Intel X520 10Gb NIC. using a traffic generator and WireShark on the host. In this config I can only get about 95% of the traffic being generated and fed to the NIC seen at the host.

Has anyone been doing any testing with throughputs in promiscuous mode with success? By throughputs I am talking about > 1Gbps and more in the region of 10 to 20Gbps?

Happy to provide more info on the config but interested to see if others out there are testing at > 1Gbps on Hyper-V 2016.

0xc00002e2 On all DCs after leaving them off for about 3 months

back in October I used Disk2VHD to take copies of all my domain controllers and load them into a Hyper-V lab.  I had no issues working with them back then.

yesterday I attempted to start them up and work with them but they all failed on booting with a Stop error 0xc00002e2.

I attempted to take to original VHDX file from October and rebuild the lab, but each server produced the same error.

I understand this has to do with some corruption or issue with the AD database, but because its happened to all 3 and I am trying to figure out if its simply because they have been offline for so long or there is some underlying issue I am unaware of.

I've left DCs offline in a lab environment before for longer and had no issue restarting it.

Any feedback is appreciated.

FYI - They are all 2012R2 in Windows 2003 mode.

Hyper-V Replication Issue: Size of change tracking file exceeded the maximum size limit. (0xC03A0021)

We have a database server that keeps sending us this error: Hyper-V Replica failed to switch the log file for change tracking for virtual machine 'xxxxxxxxx'. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) - Error: Size of change tracking file exceeded the maximum size limit. (0xC03A0021)

This usually messes with my replication, but it resynchronizes fine.

1) I'm not sure I understand what this error entails. What and where is the tracking log, and where can I expand the size limit of this tracking file? 2) I have a suspicion it has to so with resources on the machine. This is a database server with SQL server on it, and the issues usually occur when we're pushing this to production. This machine has dynamically expanding memory.

Does anyone have any input into this?

Best,

Server 2012 R2 free Hyper V

$

We have two new servers, each at different clients running Server 2012 R2 and I heard that Microsoft will allow us so spin up another Server 2012 R2 free in Hyper V. I wanted to post here to see how that works as I typically use VMWare but since this seems to be included I would like to use it. My question is once install the Hyper V role and create another 20120R2 VM will it ask me for a product key or will it activate on its own? Not sure how the licensing works for this yet. Can someone shed some light on how this works?

Vlans/Trunks. No network access, even after deleting the Vlans and Trunks!

Been at this for HOURS.. I am playing with VLANS in Hyper-V. Trunking, access ports and so on. Didt get it to work, so I deleted all the VLAN's and now nothing works. First I ran: Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan-VMName VM1-Trunk-AllowedVlanIdList 7-12-NativeVlanId 10 and after that Get-VM VM1 | Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan-Untagged. I have restarted the VM's, reset the tcp/ip stack. I installed Wireshark, I see no icmp packets at all when pinging any computer in the same network. Deleted the vSwitch, did nothing..

Anyone have any idea?

Edit: Deleted the vNics and now it works. But... When adding the same IP and naming the vNics with the same name it says its already in use. How do I get rid of that?

Can't create Hyper-V Generation 2 virtual machine: “no uefi-compatible file system was found” and “DHCP failed”

$

I can't create a Hyper-V Generation 2 Virtual Machine. There is a link to the screenshot of the problem below, but basically it says "no uefi-compatible file system was found" on the SCSI DVD and SCSI Disk, and also "DHCP failed" for the network adapter. The host and guest OS are both Windows 10 Pro x64 and my laptop has an i7 4720hq and 16 gb ram (and I don't know if it matters, but my BIOS is set in UEFI boot mode).

Any solutions or workarounds?

Thanks!

Loss of Connection when Virtual switch is in place

$

Hello,

Currently, my host machine can not arp the gateway address of 10.0.1.1/24. It was able to get internet access before the hyper-v vm was configured on the 2012 R2 Server.

When the external V-switch was made the Hyper-v manager made a new interface on the server called "Data" and transferred my server ip address to this new interface. The server has the ip address of 10.0.1.11/24 and a gw of 10.0.1.1/24. After, creating the switch, the Vm was booted and installed to the disk. The Vm has a ip address 10.0.1.13/24. It was after the Vm was created that my server lost connection to the gateway. When I ran the window troubleshoot Diagnostic tool on the V-switch interface, internet access was back but lost after the arp entry expired.

I'm assuming that the troubleshoot tool block the vm machine for second that allowed my machine to arp the gateway.

My route table has a default route to the proper gateway address

The Arp table has the VM, 2012 Server, and some other statics that are in place by the machine. The gateway address is not in the arp table after about 3 mins.

I'm not sure if the correct V-switch is being used. Or if i should create a internal version and bridge it to the VM.

Only administrators have permission to add, remove, or configure software during a terminal services remote session...

We started having issues with Intuit Software within RDS in our Server 2012 R2 Standard, both Quicken 2017 Home & Business and QuickBooks Pro 2017 are constantly complaining about installer error (QB ins asking to run the setup.exe every 5s, and Quicken does not allow the data file association to open downloaded content from financial institutions...

Researching online only brings reference to Server 2003, and therefore irrelevant to our situation!

Contacting Intuit Support is worthless as they try desktop approach to the server environment, which won't work for obvious reasons... ;)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hyper-V Host with VLAN Trunk. Not accepting Trunk traffic..

Trying to get VLAN & Trunking to work in Hyper-V.

I have two VM's on the same Network. SCVMM and Host1. Host1 should be a Trunk for VLAN 7-12 and Native VLAN 10. I then put SCVMM on VLAN7 via the GUI. Does not work! If I set Native Vlan to 7 it works. If I not use Trunking it works (both VMs on VLAN 7).

VMName VMNetworkAdapterName Mode     VlanList
------ -------------------- ----     --------
Host1  Network Adapter      Trunk    10,7-12
Remote Network Adapter      Untagged
Remote Network Adapter      Untagged
RRAS   Network Adapter      Untagged
RRAS   Network Adapter      Untagged
RRAS   Network Adapter      Untagged
RRAS   Network Adapter      Untagged
SCVMM  Network Adapter      Access   7
SCVMM  Network Adapter      Untagged
SCVMM  Network Adapter      Untagged

What Am I doing wrong, or not understanding?

Its this LAB I am setting up.

Storage Replication Not working

Hi,

I have strange issue and I hope that someone can help me. I am configuring Storage Replication and replication is failing on Physical sector size.

Server 1 Physical sector size is 512

Server 2 Physical sector size is 4096

I understand that all disks needs to have same size, same sector etc. but that what I don't understand is if I take one drive from server 2 and import it in server 1 physical sector size changes from 4096 to 512 and I am not able to change it back.

Can someone explain what is going on, please?
