Windows 7 Remote Server Administration Tools and Hyper-V server 2012 R2 compatibility

$

Hello,

I have a Windows 2012 R2 stand alone server with HyperV role active and a lot of VM up & running and it is part of domain 'TEST'

On Computer Mgmt --> System Tools --> Local user & Groups --> Groups--> Hyper-V Administrators I have inserted domain user Pippo.

On a Windows 8.1 PC client which is part of domain 'TEST', I have activated the Windows Feauture 'Hyper-V-->Hyper-V Management Tool-->Hyper-V GUI Management Tool' which it contains Virtual Machine Connection Tool too.

If I log in with domain user 'Pippo@Test' and use Virtual Machine Connection Tool I can control all VM console on Hyper-V server.

On a Windows 7 SP1 Prof. Ed. which is part of domain 'TEST', I have installed 'Remote Server Administration Tools x86/x64' and activate the Windows Feauture 'Hyper-V-->Hyper-V Management Tool-->Hyper-V GUI Management Tool' which it contains Virtual Machine Connection Tool too.

If I log in with domain user 'Pippo@Test' and use Virtual Machine Connection Tool I can't control any VM console on Hyper-V server or use Hyper-V manager console: the system give me the error unable to enumerates virtual machine.

The question is: Remote Server Administration Tools x86/x64 and Virtual Machine Connection Tool on Windows 7 SP1 Prof.Ed. are compatibile with Hyper-V 2012 R2 server or it can use it only for Hyper-V 2008 R2?

Kind regards,

Fabio

Hyper-V 2008R2 VM Entering Saved State Automatically

$

Hello all,

I've searched around looking for an answer to my question, but the only examples I can find online of a VM automatically going into a saved state are cases in which there is a backup program causing the VM to enter that saved state.

My VM seems to be entering a State of Saving randomly in the afternoon while no backups are happening.

Has anyone else experienced this? This is a critical problem as we run IIS and host files and an internal webpage on the VM. The VM does not host Exchange or Active Directory.

I should say, I have Windows Backup running on the Guest OS, which I know is not the best way to back up, and I'm changing my solution to VEEAM, but my backups happen at 3AM.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I'm running Version 6.1.7601.1754 and only one VM that has Server 2008 R2 on it.

Connect USB from hyper-v to linux VM hosted on same hyper-v

I want to mount removable media to a linux VM in hyper-v setup.  Tried the following ways.

  1.        Bring removable media to offline.  (This option is not supported for removable media)
  2.        Enhanced session mode approach expecting guest VM OS should be windows version
  3.        Create VHD using removable media and connect VHD to VM.  This is working. But one problem is that if we make any changes either in USB or VHD it is not getting reflected to other part.

Is any other way is available to access removable media inside linux VM?

Hi

I want to migrate my MV environment from VMWare to Hyper-V but Microsoft don't help me to do it. No guide how to do it, no examples, nothing...

Virtual Machine Converter 3.3 converted VMware VM with succesfull but Linux cannot boot in new Hyper-V VM.

The same situation after conversion using Microsoft System Center VMM 2012 R2.

It make me crazy....

Does anyone covert Suse Linux 11 SP2 from VMware 5.5 to Hyper-V 2012 R2 with successfull?

My VMware VM with Suse Linux 11 SP2 setup is:

Merging snapshots - calculating how large a VHD will grow

$

On 2008 R2: Say you have a 100GB dynamic VHD with 10GB used inside the VM (so the VHD itself is only 10GB), and took a snapshot, then created a 50GB file inside the VM. Then say you deleted the 50GB file inside the VM, so you had only 10GB being reported used in the VM again, then deleted and merged the snapshot. Would you end up with a roughly 60GB dynamic VHD after the merge, or a 10GB?

I understand the best practices or stated maximum space required for a merge being 2x of the AVHD, but I was curious how it works in your experience or "under the hood". I'm planning to do a merge this weekend with a similar scenario to the above - where a logfile grew to over 200GB, then I deleted it, and I wanted to know if it will grow the VHD by ~200GB, or if it's unlikely to.

Thanks for any thoughts.

NIC will not work after Uninstalling Hyper-V

I was having networking issues on one of my Hyper-V hosts. So I removed it from the cluster, uninstalled clustering and Hyper-V and not no mater what I try, I cannot get networking to work. I have configured static IP addresses and I cannot ping to another host. I set it to DHCP and I get APIPA, even through I know the networking is configured to give me a DHCP. I have taken a laptop to the switch and plugged it into the port and I get a DHCP IP address. I am at a loss. I have uninstalled the NIC, updated firmware, install Drivers. I cannot seem to find where the NIC is broken. Are there any registry keys that Hyper-V modifies that might be causing my issue with the networking? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS plymouth blank splash screen on Windows 10 Hyper-V

Hi,

I installed an Ubuntu 16.04.1 server edition to Windows 10 Hyper-V.

Just after installing I used this configuration on /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and updated grub by running update-grub2

In the next boot of the appliance I just get a blank screen forever, the prompt for login doesn't appear. I tried video=uvesafb and video=hyperv_fb with no consistent luck, rarely the splash screen appears briefly and the boot ends. By enabling plymouth:debug on kernel boot it seems that is something related with fb, but not sure where is the problem

Any help appreciated,

Fixed size VHD with 2 year old snapshot (VM has 2 HDDs)

$

Hello All,

I have been tasked with merging a avhd and vhd for a company that is running out of VHD disk space

This is how it is.

Server 2012 (not R2) with Hyper V installed

1 VHD running SBS 2008 (exchange has been moved to Office 365, no SharePoint, just file shares and limited apps running remain)

The VHD has a snapshot attached which has been running for 2YEARS NOW!!!!

the C drive is 100GB Fixed (60GB of uncommitted avhd data)

the D drive has 500GB fixed (230GB of avhd uncommitted data)

I cannot "delete/merge" the snapshot because the array does not have the merge space (I am really stuck here)

I have tried adding an empty snapshot to the avhd and then exporting it but it "completes" but the avhd data is not committed!!! this is because I think ......the fixed VHD size??  reached its max and then...says its complete

Exact same this with the D drive

After the export the VHD are 100 Dynamically expanding and 500 GD expanding for the D drive

this is what I have tried adding an empty avhd to the parent because I read on many placed that if you export this it merges the avhd into the vhd which give you 2 singe VHDs (C: , D:)......this works but the uncommitted data is not merged into the original VHD.so I end up with two VHDs 1 that has all the old data and the same with the second...

so 1 VHD, 2 Years of uncommitted avdh not no room to merge because of the original vhd because its fixed size

I have spent all weekend on this and found no solution but I do have a 3TB ICSI target to play around with it if this helps

Any suggestions?

PS I have spent 25hours on this already but I will try anything

Kind Regards,

Shane Kearney.

Hyper-V Win10 guest OS fatal error during VSS snapshot. Most current integration services installed.

Am having a Server Backup issue on my WS2012R2 server where any Win10 Guest OS is reported as (Offline).  When it attempts a scheduled backup of the Win10 Hyper-V VMs, the guest OS encounters a "fatal error 0xEF..."

When I run the Get-VMIntegrationservices command on the WS2012R2 host, all is OK except for:

VSS. Enabled = True, but PrimaryStatus shows "Non-Recoverable Error" and SecondaryStatus shows "The Protocol Version of the component..."

The guest OS appears to be crashing when the Server Backup attempts to take a snapshot.

Is there anything that can be done to correct this VSS error? or restore VSS functionality within the guest.  I suspect this was caused by some sort of Windows Update on the host but cannot seem to pinpoint it.

I understand Integration Services for Win 10 are now done via Windows Update.  When I attempt to mount the Integration Services .ISO on the guest and run setup, it reports that the most current integration services have been installed within the Win 10 guest OS.  I cannot find a way to force a re-install or repair.

Thanks.

Hello All,

I have Test Environment which include 10 VM with Checkpoint.

Installed Hyper -V

Created 2 Private Switch

Name : Switch 1 = SW1 m Switch 2 = SW2

Created VM : Installed OS : Done Basic Configuration Task :

Then i take CHECKPOINT.

I can easily apply Checkpoint and get virgin Machine for Different LABS.

PROBLEM :

I Deleted OLD Private Switch.

Created New Private Switch with Different Naming Convention.

Virtual Machine LAN Adopter Says Configuration Error.

If Manually Assign New Adopter, i am able to start Machine.

But i have to do this after each time i apply checkpoint.

If i don't change network adopter setting, VM stuck at "STARTING" 10%

Is there any solution ?

So first i got support from veeam but they couldn’t help because it is a windows server 2012 problem.

i was looking to the vss admin writers, 3 where in a failed state:

How to resolve VSS "Non-Recoverable Error, The protocol version of the component installed in the virtual machine does not match..."

Am having issues with Windows Server Backup on a Windows Server 2012 R2 host when attempting to backup a Win 10 guest VM.  A Get-Integrationservice -VMName [VMName] returns this error.  Hyper-V on host reports that integration services version installed in guest OS is most current.  Even tried to create a new Hyper-V Win 10 VM from scratch and get the same error.

QuestionHere's the details of the error when Get-Integrationservice run from the WS2012R2 host on the Win 10 VM.  All guest services appear Enabled and OK except for VSS:

Anyway to use Screen Scaling when connected to a VM?

If I go into Hyper-V or Failover Cluster Manager and I Connect directly to a VM, is there any way to set it so I can resize the window and have it shrink what I see so I still see everything but I jsut see it smaller?  I have a need to Connect to multiple VMs at once and I want to rearrange them on my screen so I can see 4 or 6 at once and just see them shrunken from their normal size.

Thanks.

Can I give permissions to Connect to only certain VMs?

We have some training VMs that I want to allow the trainers to Connect to but I don't want them to be able to connect to anything else.  Is there any way to selectively give permission only to certain VMs?

I'd also want to use some sort of Powershell script to launch the Connection to these VMs.  Is there a way to do that as well?

Thanks.

Cannot identify which host a certain VM is connected to.

I have 1 server running Windows 2012 Standard (not R2).

This server is the only one that does not have the reg keys filled in here:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters

Is there another way of identifying the host that this machine is connected to? Or is there a way of repairing this through an installation or update? (Boss prefers I not input the keys by hand for some reason)

(For clarity sake - I know which server it is connected to now by process of elimination, but I'd like to avoid this problem in the past and find another way to skin this cat)

Connecting Hyper-V machines across network

Hi.  I have Hyper-V server 2016, running a 2012R2 guest as a DC.  On my W10 laptop host, I am running a W10 Hyper-V guest.  I have set it to point to the DNS of the DC, plus the DC is pingable by name, as well as IP.  If I try to join to domain it says it cannot find it! (Domain is NOT pingable.)

Yet, on the Hyper-V server, a second 2012R2 guest can join the domain no problem (obviously since they are running on the same host.)

Can anyone offer any reasons why this is happening?  Totally Frustrating!  :((  i do not wish to do all my VM testing on the one host, rather keep server VMs there and client VMs on my laptop for across-network testing.
