Hi ,

We are planning to implement hyper v replica feature of windows 2012 r2

For this I want to know which ports need to be opened from Firewall (Not windows Firewall) apart from 80 & 443.

Do I need to open port 445 over the wan to access my storage volumes for hyper v replica path ??

Thanks

Virtual Machine Export Failed

I am requesting help with a continuing problem I am having attempting to export a Hyper-V Virtual Machine to a shared drive internally installed on a Domain Server.

When I attempt the export, a few second later I received the following error message: “An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine. Failed to copy file during export. General access denied error (0x80070005).”

I have spent numerous hours searching Blog Posts and Online forums for a definitive solution to this problem. The purposed online solutions that I have come across refer toNTFS level permissions & share level permissions set at the drive share for the Hyper-V Computer account, the User account used, and System account. None have worked for me. Here is an example of such a post finding:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2008849.

I also tried the settings from a purposed solution for Hyper-V – General Access Denied Error message listed in this post here: http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2009/02/hyper-v-general-access-denied-error-for.html. No luck here also.

I have a small Microsoft 2008 R2 SP1 Server network that consists of 2 Domain Controllers, (one which serve as a Hyper-V Host). 4 virtual machines and a combination of wireless and PC based Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 clients.

The 1TB drive I’m attempting to move my virtual machines to is brand new, purchased five days ago. I reformatted this drive a couple times to see if that had any affect, none at all.

So, I’m reaching out for any other suggestions that I might try. Please, remember I have already tried and have in place the NTFS level permissions & share level permissions set at the drive share for the Hyper-V Computer account, the User account used, and System account.

Your help with this problem will be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Martiar

Hyper-V snapshot for package management?

$

Greetings,

I have created a Hyper-V Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 PC to use for installing Flexera AdminStudio. The idea is to use this VM to create msi packages. AdminStudio will monitor the install of an application and then create a package based on the system changes. It is suggested to create a VM to do this so you can always revert back to a fresh image after the package has been created.

I am interested in how to revert back a VM in Hyper-V? I see that there is something called Checkpoint. Will Checkpoint allow me to always revert my VM back to a specific point? (IE after the package has been completed)

Cheers,

Disk remain readonly inside guest while it is read-write enabled on hypervisor host

Hi,

Strangely Hyper-V guest is not updating its disk cache, even issuing diskpart rescan is not helping. So disk (Harddisk1) inside guestremains readonly while disk (Harddisk7) is read-write enabled on hypervisor host.

Hyper-V virtual machine managemnt service stopped on W2012 server due to "Event 10016, DIstibutedCom"

$

Hello,

So we had an issue on a W2012 server running Hyper-V with 5 virtual machines, that being
that the virtual machine management service was in a stopped state when I logged on hence none of the VM's were running. All I had to do was start it again and everything came back with no issues, but I want to get to the bottom of why this happened to ensure it does nto happen again.

From Event viewer I see that we had four instances of "Event 10016, DIstibutedCom" and then a further five instances and this corresponds with the VM's going offline, but also from the error you can see that it relates directly to the VMMS as below :

The
application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission
for the COM Server application with CLSID

{D9E7172C-F462-4CC8-9C80-3B3A00D0D874}

and APPID

{BD168A68-48E8-4AE5-BF4B-CC4F495A0D0F}

to the user NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\518C6C66-296F-449D-A79C-BC2D4B0BBA1C SID
(S-1-5-83-1-1368157286-1151150447-767335591-481954635) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component
Services administrative tool.

With APPID : {BD168A68-48E8-4AE5-BF4B-CC4F495A0D0F} being that Virtual Machine Management
when checking in DCOM Config.

There is no event to say that the VMMS is stopping or stopped after event 10016, as I would
expect to see and there is no common event happening before the two batches of
errors either.

Looking into event 10016 it would appear that the permissions seem to be the issue here and
I need to edit the permissions in the component services admin tool, but when
looking in DCOMConfig the security tab is grey out (probably due to UAC) but I don’t
see why this has happned now with no evniromental changes and why its not
effecting me still?

We do use SCVMM so I am wondering if an event triggered by SCVMM has caused this also ?

Any help appreciated?

Regard’s

Iain

Run a script in an isolted Hyper-v VM

Hi,

I am trying to build a script to run in an isolated VM machine with no network access (Connected to close switch inside the Hyper-v).

In VMware there is an easy whey to do it with "Invoke-VMScript" command in power CLI. Didn't fond any whey to do it in Powershell for Hyper-v.

See example for VMware Power CLI:

Invoke-VMScript "ping Server1" -vm server -HostUser User -HostPassword Pass -GuestUser User2 -Pass2 -ScriptType "bat"

Thanks

Password Reset Disk in a Generation 2 VM

The generation 2 virtual machine does not support .vfd virtual floppy disks which used to be a mean for creating a password reset disk in a generation 1 vm. Is there any way that a password reset disk could be created for the generation 2 vm?

removal of ata_piix generate crash for VM running on HyperV 2012 R2

Hi All,

I have a below use case:

1. created a VM with 1 vhd and 1 VHDX disk on HyperV2012 R2 hypervisor.

2. created 1 bootable iso which contains vmlinuz & initrd file from Oracle enterprise linux 6.4 media.

3. mount created media on VM and booted this VM using CD boot option.

4. when machine boots ata_piix controller gets loaded at initrd stage. but while unloading the ata_piix, it crashes and generate the call trace.

5. when there is only single disk attached to VM loading and unloading of ata_piix controller happens successfully, without any problem.(note: disks are running on IDE controller).

6. one more strange thing is: when I add one more virtual processor i.e. if two virtuall processors are present in VM then ata_piix gets uunloaded successfully, without any crash. but if single processor is there then if one disk is attached. ata_piix gets unloaded successfully but if more than 1 disk is attached to VM, unloading of ata_piix generate crash.

need your help to resolve this issue. Please look into it and do let me know if you need any further info to resolve the same.

Thanks,

indus.

Server 2012 R2 Page File Size

$

Hi everyone,

I am just busy creating a new 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server which has 256GB of RAM.  I noticed that after enabling the Hyper-V role, that the page file size is currently managed by the system and it is currently set by the Server as 36GB - which is causing me some major issues as the Server that I am building has a 45GB SSD and only have 0.5GB free!  I thought that once the Hyper-V role was enabled, that the page file was supposed to be reduced as the O/S doesn't need a large page file due to the VM's utilising the RAM.  After some web searches, this is indeed correct which I find very odd...  I can obviously set a smaller size, but apparently we shouldn't be modifying the page file size if the Hyper-V role is enabled as it goes against Microsoft recommended best practice.

Can anyone shed any light as to why the page file is still so large, and what I can do to reduce the size whilst making sure that the Server is still setup as per Microsoft best practice/support?

Many thanks.

Windows 2012R2 Domain Controllers running as HA W2012r2 Clustered VM

I have seen a lot of articles talking about not running DCs in an HA Clustered configuration for many justified reasons.  The articles refer to only having a limited amount of Domain Controllers in the environment.  Suggestions were to have at least one (FSMO Roles) as a physical.  There was mention to have them on Clustered nodes but not in the cluster using storage assigned to the Node that is not shared.  If the requirement for having a physical DC is met and a few of the DCs as a VM in a non clustered config is met, is it best practice to run the rest of them in a HA Clustered environment including RO DCs?

Thanks for any input provided

Hello All,

Can someone PLEASE clarify the following:?

How many VMs can I have on Hyper-V Server 2012R2 without ANY license?
Can I share (everyone full access) a folder on a domain (under Hyper-V Server 2012 R2) without infringing on Microsoft licenses?

UNIDENTIFIED NETWORK ON HYPER-V GUEST

$

I have a problem and have exhausted all of my ideas for a solution. Here's the setup, all on a domain. None of these are domain controllers or DNS servers:

HOST

2012 Hyper-v Server core host with two NICs and two virtual switches. One NIC is 192.168.20.1. One NIC is 192.168.21.1. Virtual switch #1 is 192.168.20.2. Virtual switch #2 is 192.168.21.2. So, one virtual switch per subnet and all switches are set to external.

GUESTS

Guest #1 -  2012 on virtual switch #1 - 192.168.20.3

Guest #2 -  Win 7 on virtual switch #2 - 192.168.21.3

Guest #3 - 2008 R2 x64 on virtual switch #2 (this VM has been imported from an existing, working VM on a dif host with the exact same IP) - 192.168.21.4

THE PROBLEM

Guest #1 works with no issues.

Guest #2 works with no issues.

Guest #3 shows up as unidentified network and cannot ping outside of the HOST. I can ping virtual switch #2, but can't ping ANYTHING else on 192.168.21.x.

I know virtual switch #2 is fine because guest #2 works with no issues. (can ping entire network)

One last thing, when I first imported Guest #3 and started it, I WAS able to ping the entire network. After about 3 minutes, the connection went down. Keep in mind that this is an IMPORT of a working VM. I can turn the original VM back on at the other host and it works fine. Even the name of virtual switch #2 (SWITCH) is the same as the original host.

Any ideas as to why this is happening and what would cause the network connectivity to stop?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

I am facing major issue with Hyper Linux machine.

It is going in saved state (getting down for 10-15 minutes) during backup.

My Linux machine OS is CentOS 5.11 with integration service 3.5 and Parent Hyper V machine OS is Windows Server 2012 Data Center.

Also I have added iscsi controller on this VM and as per below Microsoft article live backup is supported on CentOS 5.11.

Please suggest me on the same to fix this issue.

Thanks,

Server 2012R2 Failover Clustering Setup

$

We planned to setup failover clustering using 4 single box with no shared storage. There will be some heavy VM running inside. As what we can understand is clustering failover through network port, our current network is 1Gbps only. It's quite slow when migrating VM. We do planned for 10Gbps but it do cost a lot. Since we have 8Gbps FB switches in house, is it possible to use HBA card for this clustering?

Passthrough drive expand question

Hello!

I have a HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 with SmartArray P420i RAID controller.

Hard drives are all changed to bigger ones, so now i can extend array´s logical drive.

The same logical drive is passed through to a Server 2012 VM, with Exchange 2013 on it.Physical host is working on Server 2012 Standard.

Can i extend the logical drive in HP Smart array Raid controller, while the VM is working or should i shut it down?

We have a virtual server with 16 core cpu's, In device manager the computer is showing as ACPI X64 based PC instead of ACPI multiprocessor in windows 2008, 2012, Any idea ?

As per my understanding only windows 2003 and earlier version will show ACPI multiprocessor PC and windows 2008/2012 it will show X64 based PC or x86 based PC.

connect to a virtual machine from Hyper-V Manager

Hi,As we know we are following below steps to connect to virtual machine

Open Hyper-V Manager. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then clickHyper-V Manager.

  • In the results pane, under Virtual Machines, right-click the name of the virtual machine and clickConnect.

  • The Virtual Machine Connection command prompt opens and we can login and execute commands.

  • How to achieve this programmatically in C# without  GUI?(how to remotely execute commands on a VM and get results programmatically using C#).We have performed start/stop/pause/reset operations on VM using WMI but not sure about connecting to VM?

  • Thanks&Regards

Live migration to HA failed leaving VHD on local storage and VM in cluster = Unsupported Cluster Configuration

$

Hi all

Fun one here, I've been moving non-HA VMs to a HA and everything has been working perfectly until now.  All this is being performed on Hyper-V 2012R2, Windows Server 2012R2 and VMM 2012R2.

For some reason on the VMs failed the migration with an error 10608 "Cannot create or update a highly available virtual machine because Virtual Machine Manager could not locate or access Drive:\Folder"  The odd thing is the drive\folder is a local storage one and I selected a CSV in the migration wizard.

The net result is that the VM is half configured into the cluster but the VHD is still on local storage.  Hence the "unsupported cluster configuration" error.

The question is how do I roll back? I either need to get the VM out of the cluster and back into a non-HA state or move the VHD onto the CSV.  Not sure if the latter is really a option.

I've foolishly clicked "Ignore" on the repair so now I can't use the "undo" option (brain fade moment on my part).

Any help gratefully received as I'm a bit stuck with this.

Thanks

Rob
