A virtual machine can't authenticate accounts from a domain

Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard server with Hyper-V, where there is a VM.  Hyper-V Manager is 6.3.9600.16384 is used.

The VM was created and at that time it was able to authenticate accounts from anther domain.  The VM is in one domain, say Domain A, and the VM and applications on the VM was able to use accounts in another domain, say Domain B.  Doman A and Domain B had a trusted relationship and all was working great on the VM and other servers in Domain A.

Then, the trusted relationship was broken.  The applications and the VM still worked, but you could not add and use accounts in Domain B.  Applications using accounts in Domain B could be not be authenticated either.

Then, recently we fixed the broken relationship between the two domains.  However, on the VM, accounts from Domain B could not be added to applications and could not be authenticated nor used, even though other servers in Domain A had accounts from Domain B working again.

What can be done to get the VM to recognized accounts in Domain B, now that the trusted relationship is working again between to two domains?

Turn Off Extra NIC IP's

Server 2012 R2 hyper-V. What we want to do is stop the host OS from grabbing ip's on NIC's that the host OS does not use.

The physical server has 3 NIC's. NIC 1 is dedicated to the host OS; NIC 2 is dedicated to a VM and NIC 3 is dedicated to a VM. When I logon to the host and look at the network settings, it shows two of the NIC's getting ip's via DHCP. If I turn uncheck"allow management OS to share this network adapter", I get the following:

This is on NIC 2 which belongs to a VM and not the host OS. How do I turn off/disable the host OS gleaming onto the other 2 NIC's?

External USB Drives

Good morning!

I am trying to figure out a way to easily swap between 3 external USB hard drives on a Server 2012 R2 virtual machine that runs via Hyper-V. I have 3 external hard drives, each is 2 terabytes in size.  These 3 drives are going to be used to backup the C: drive of the virtual server.

Is there a way to avoid the hassle of having to initialize each drive manually on the server after I unplug one drive and then connect another? I don't ever want more than 1 drive connected at a time. For example, if I have drive 1 plugged in and my backup cycle is complete I would like to be able to unplug that first drive and then plug in the 2nd drive without having to go back into the drive management and initialize the drive I just plugged in. Is that possible? I haven't been able to find anyone that seems to be doing this, so I may be out of luck.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Export to network drive

Ahoy mateys!

I want to be able to export the VMs directly to a network drive.  It is giving me an access error even though on the network computer i've set up permissions to the server FULL ACCESS.  Do any of you have a step by step process that you know works? Please don't send me any links unless you know it works.  I've just spent 8 hours researching this.

Thanks in advance!

How can i get temp and such on core install

I know this has been asked a million times but i can't find an answer (maybe i am just that noob). I am trying to get the temp and fan speeds etc from the computer running windows server 2012 r2 core. here are the specs of my computer:

mobo - ASUS M5A99FX pro r2

CPU - AMD 8320

RAM - 16G

The mobo comes with AI Suite which shows me this info but i can't install it on a core OS. It will also allow for tweaking of the settings. I would like like to be able to watch what is happening in the box as far as temps and such. I manage the server with either windows 8.1 or windows 10 but i see nothing on how to get this info. Any help would be great but i really need it to be a free solution. Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

Hi Members,

We have Linux VM on which we assigned dynamic memory approx 20 GB and 8 Logical Processor.

Machine was performing slow for which i just just checked inside VM performance its memory utilization shows 19 GB and processor usage shows 98 % while on hyper-v manager it shows 17 GB utilization of memory and only 35 % processor utilization.

can someone explain which one shows correct figures

Inside VM or hyper-v manager ?

Virtual Network Adapter (vEthernet) unauthenticated

Hi,

I have a problem, with configuring a Virtual Network Adapter on SC VMM.

I created a logical switch with two physical network adapter (team) and add a virtual network adapter to the logical switch. After that a virtual network adapter will be created on the hyper-v host, but with the status "domain.local (unauthenticated). With another hyper-v host it work without problems.

I tried to remove and recreate all that stuff but without success.

Do someone know that problem? Or can help to find a solution?

Thank you for the help.

Blu Ray Ripping in Hyper-V

I have the following BD drive connected to the my desktop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135252. I have installed Hyper-V Core and set up a Windows 8 VM on it. My issue is that Hyper-V shows the drive as a DVD Drive. Which means whenever I pass it to the VM, and try to burn or rip a Blu Ray it fails miserably. Has anyone else had issues with getting Hyper V to recognize their BD Drive as a BD drive?

Live Migration between 2 work group machines

Hi,

I have 2 workgroup machines and I'm trying to perform a Live Move from Powershell on the source machine.  I've configured CredSSP on both servers using the Hyper-v management console but when I run

move-vm source_vm destination_host  I get the following error

move-vm : Virtual machine migration operation for 'source_vm' failed at migration source 'source_host'. (Virtual machine ID A4186964-5976-45DC-847F-41D7589BD9EF)

Hyper-V-VMMS event log for more information.

I've looked in the Hyper-V-VMMS event log and its referencing an authentication error.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  This is the error

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the destination host: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).

I've anabled remote management and also the CredSSP stuff and am struggling to find anything else that is needed for live Migration within 2 workgroup machines.  Both Administrator usernames\passwords are the same on each host.

Thanks

I want to setup a hyper-v 2012 environment to host mainly dev machines. I have a blade server for hyper-v, 1 server for a File Server (with a  10Gb nic and SAS HBA) and a MSA60 for additional Storage . Will this work to use Hyper-v over SMB? I know storage spaces & also clustering of DAS only works on certain HW but will SMB 3.0 work in this type of setup

Servers losing static IP Addresses

Hi There,

We have been experiencing a very strange problem now for several months. We have servers that loses there static IP addresses intermittently - this can happen when the server is rebooted or when the server is running, there is no consistent pattern. This has happened to both VM servers and physical servers. It has happened to VM servers running on Microsoft Hyper-V and VMWare.

We run our server infrastructure across different hardware(Dell, HP).  When we check the network properties via GUI all is fine but when you check from command prompt it's showing the 169.x.x.x address against a card. If we enable\disable the NIC it resolves the issue.

This issue is now becoming very disrupted to services, at least once a week we're now seeing this issue. The event logs are not giving us any information.

Has anyone come across this issue or provide advice what would be the caused. It's happening across all versions of Windows Server from Windows 2008, 2008R2, 2012 & 2012R2.

Hyper-V on Win 8.1 Embedded Host

I believe I'm having permission issues when attempting to use Hyper-V on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro.  Hyper-V seems to install cleanly, and from an admin account I can use the Hyper-V Manager without issue and connect to a running VM.  However if I attempt to use the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection application from the same account, it reports "You do now have the required permission to complete this task..." And attempts to run either the Manager or the Virtual Machine Connection result in the same on a standard user account.

I've attempted to modify the permissions in Hyper-V InitialStore.xml by adding both my Dev (admin) and Test (user) to the Administrator role but this has not fixed the issue. I've also looked in the Computer Management utility and the group "Hyper-V Administrators" does not exist.  When I run the script from Ben Armstrong that generated and assigned rights to that group before it was shipping with Hyper-V I receive a notification that my current user is already added to the group and still don't see anything in Computer Management.

The end goal is to be able to run the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection Utility from a non-administrative user. Any advice is appreciated.

Deleting Checkpoints

I'm confused about deleting checkpoints from Hyper-V Manager on my Windows 2012 R2 Standard server. I tried to delete the only checkpoint (about 2 months old) for a VM and then noticed that it said it was merging. At the time I thought it was reverting the VM to the point of when I created the checkpoint so, I canceled the merge. So, what did I do to the VM? What can I do to make sure that the VM runs as it has for the last two months up to now? I've been reading about "merging" after deleting and still don't know why the word merge would appear. I'm afraid that I've either lost the changes in the last two months or I've reverted back to the state of the last checkpoint. Please help!

Hyper-V Administrators Group Not Working

$

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me out. We have a complex environment with RBAC heavily applied. Our deployed administrators don't have Local Admin rights on the 2012 Hyper-V servers. They are in the Hyper-V Administrators group. Now everything works well until they go add there second Hyper-V Server into Hyper-V Manager. It just doesn't work. Now they don't get access denied its some issue that even google doesn't know about. I'll be able to post it tomorrow when I get into the office. You can't see the VM's however the host adds. They can log into the second box and view all the vm's but if they go to add the first box into hyper-v manager just doesn't work. Now soon as we give them local admin to the machine it works. However for our security model we can't do this. I was wondering if someone can provide any help on the matter? Have also tried setting up the permissions in azman again and still no luck. They are joined to the same domain as well.

Thanks

Draining Node feature...

hi all;

What happens when I reboot a cluster node without first using the Drain Node feature? In this scenario, does this feature automatically operate?

Thanks

SYSTEM PID 4 is relentlessly reading VHD files for VMs that are not even powered on

I've got a bit of a quandary here.  We have several VMs that were powered off about 2 weeks ago.  Despite no access being requested, the SYSTEM process is performing large amounts of read activity on the VHD files.  Image name is "System, PID is 4, which corresponds to the PID of the hypervisor.

The host is Server 2012 R2 Datacentre edition.  We have a 2-node HA cluster and the VHDs reside in ClusterStorage (SAN) as usual.  The Failover Cluster Manager still shows the VM role defined.  Removing the role from FCM did not seem to have any effect.  We do NOT have Replication enabled on any nodes.

2 Questions:

1) How do I tell what is constantly reading these files?

2) How do I make it stop?  The high read activity is impacting my cluster performance.

Move VM's from current Volume to new Disc on the same host (Win 2012 R2) for added space

I have one host with 5 VM's running on it. On my host, I have a C: a D: and now a E:

On my D:, there is two folder. One is Data, which are flat file for the users and the second folder is "VirtualServers" where inside you will find a folder for each VM.

Because my data and virtualservers folders have grown to much, I just purchase new sata drives to put in my server. Server is an HP and all I had to do was to create a new RAID 5 array and now, in Windows 2012 R2 I can see the new E: drive with all the new space.

The plan is to move the "VirtualServers" folder to the new E:

I have read many way to do it but I want to make sure this is done the right way as I cannot afford a nightmare story like the one I have read online.

I see that there is a "move" option under Setting of Hyper-V Manager but I also read about exporting and importing. Which should be use? Can this be done while the VM's are running or should they be shut down?

Thank you

Trouble with a OpenVPN VM in Hyper-V.

Hello,

I will explain a bit about my setup firstly before I get into my issue. So I have a home server running Windows Server 2012 R2. I am using Hyper-V role to host a OpenMediaVault VM. I use this to create an easy OpenVPN that I can use anywhere. I have attached my OMV VM to a external network virtual switch (has full internet connection).

The issue is when I generate my VPN config and use the certificates and test on my phone. When I connect locally to my WiFi I can connect to my VPN VM machine no issues at all. However when I flick to 4G and try to connect it sticks on 'waiting from reply to server'. I have tested this with a friend on his laptop and he also has the same issue.

I have port forwarded in my router the correct port and IP so it should allow connections, I have even tried disabling the Host 2012 R2 firewall but still no joy. I belive it somthing in Hyper-V virtual switch stopping it.

Anyone got any idea what the issue could be?

DR and Licensing w/SA

$

I have two physical servers, one production and one that would be strictly for DR, both running a base OS with Hyper-V role, andI'm looking for some clarification on two points related to software assurance, and licensing the DR physical box.

We currently have two Windows Server Open Licenses w/SA (to support up to 4 guest OS') on our production server.

1. Referring to the Software Assurance Benefits document under Back-up for Disaster Recovery, it states the physical server designated for DR (in this case base OS with only the Hyper-V role) can be in a running state to accept replicas. So, is it safe to assume this means "always on" as long as there is no work load. E.g. no running guest OS' or other role/applications other than Hyper-V so it can accept replicas (and also allow for the quarterly patches and maintenance tasks)?

2. If so, do I just activate/assign the same license keys I used on the production on my DR physical server?

PS - I would have provided the hyperlink to the SA benefits document, but I'm a newbee and as such, Microsoft has chosen some kind of archaic act of congress method of verification, or as I've read, a need by the user to garner a greater reputation by being a prolific poster, or some such nonsense so that I become "worthy" of such dastardly acts such as providing links and images in a post.  I mean what is wrong with what every other forum does, send a verification link in an email...Done!
Sorry, just my rant of the day... Lol ;)
