Hyper-V 2012 SD Card Supported configuration

$

I have been looking on-line but struggling to find a definitive answer to the question, does Microsoft fully support Hyper-V 2012 running on an SD card setup?

I work predominately with VMware for virtualization projects and regularly deploy the hyper-visor to a redundant set of SD cards. I would like to do the same with Hyper-V 2012 R2 but only if it s a fully supported configuration.

Any advice or direction to resources with best practices on this topic is appreciated.

Hyper-V Virtual Machine memory and OS reboots

What happens to the physical host memory allocated to a virtual machine when a operating system reboot is performed? Is that memory given back to the Hyper-V host during the os reboot and then re-allocated? Would the behavior be different for VMs with static vs. Dynamic Memory enabled?

Hyper-V replica vs Shared Nothing Live Migration

Shared Nothing Live Migration allows to transport your VM over the WAN without shutting it down (how much time it takes on io intensive vm is another story)

Hyper-V replica does not allow to perform the DR switch without shutdown operation on primary site VM !

why can't it take the VM live to the DR ?

that's because if we use Shared Nothing across the WAN, we don't use the data that Hyper-V replica can and then it also breaks everything hyper-V replica does.

Point is: how to take the VM to DR in running state, what is the best way to do that ?

Can not connect to Hyper-V host in virtualized environment

Hello,

I'm just trying to evaluate/test Hyper-V 2012 R2 server. Here is my environment

Win 7 installed on metal (no firewall) - 192.168.98.38, running VMWare Workstation

Win 8 running in VMWare (192.168.98.111)

I installed Hyper-V as a virtual machine in VMWare. No issues, running and I can access options, see IP (192.168.98.51)

Enabled Hyper-V Manager inside Win 8. I can ping Hyper-V host from my Win8 vm (enabled pinding), I can see all 3 machines on my router. They all running.

However, when I try to connect or remote desktop to 192.168.98.51 - it doesn't let me. It says "Network name can not be resolved... etc."

Inside Hyper-V I have both remote management and desktop enabled.

Current version of integration services on Hyper V host and ugrading versions on VM's

Greetings!

I am looking for where the latest version number of integration services is posted, so I may verify what it should be. I am able to query using powershell the vm's on the hosts and get a return of the current version installed. However, I seem to be unable to find out the current version of IS on the hosts themselves. How do I get this information?

Hi everyone ,

Am new to virtualization , I have a windows server 2012 hyper-v server, I had successfully created the VM with windows server 2008 R2 as per my client requirement. In that VM I want to attach a VHD for storage inside the VM.For that I had turned off the VM and I had attached the VHD ,in that it attached successfully but when I started the VM the VHD displays but not accessible for use , it is not able to format also hitting the error "this process cannot proceed at this time, another process is running". I had checked all the background process but no solution also I had tried VHDX but yet I did not able to access this disk in VM in hyper-V 2012 .

Hello!

Hope you can help me. I have two servers in a cluster, OS is MS Hyper-v 2012 (free edition). Few days ago both nodes started to fall down with BSOD. Memory dump analyze shows the following information:

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (133)
The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVELor above.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000001, The system cumulatively spent an extended period of time at	DISPATCH_LEVEL or above. The offending component can usually be	identified with a stack trace.
Arg2: 0000000000001e0d, The watchdog period.
Arg3: 0000000000000000
Arg4: 0000000000000000

I'v found a hotfix KB2877237, but i cannot install it, during an installation i received a message, that update isnot applicable to my computer.

I've done as said in article (http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2877237/en-us#appliesto) - create a registry subkey, reboote server and then try to install update.

I wonder, how can i install this fix?

Thanks!

P.S. Sorry for my english, it's not my native language

Hyper-V guest OS, keyboard does not work from console

Brief background:

I'm doing some lab environment testing with Storagecraft Shadowprotect backup for a client.  We are backing up Hyper-V guest operating systems.  For busines continuity, the backups can be spun up to Oracle VirtualBox VMs in the event of disaster, but the backups can also be restored via their Headstart Restore tool to a VHD or VHDX.  Right now, I'm using a Windows 7 x64 VM for the test backup.

Here is my current problem (for the moment, forget about the Storagecraft part).  Once the VM is restored, I've lost access to the keyboard via Hyper-V console (the mouse does work, this allowed me to run the on-screen keyboard so I could see what was going on, and then test via RDP).  I can RDP to the VM and use the keyboard and mouse.  I have a few unknown devices in the Device Manager that weren't there before.  The processor also has a"splat" (yellow triangle, exclamation point).

At this point, I don't want to troubleshoot the "why" (that will be another step), but I do wish to find out how to reinstall the necessary drivers to get the system working.  I tried reinstalling the Hyper-V Integration Services, but the VM says they are already installed.  These can't be uninstalled via Control Panel.  I've tried mounting the Hyper-V Integration Services and doing a right-click "Repair" using the msi in the Support folder (both the x86 and the amd64); when I do this, it reports that the action is only valid for products that are currently installed.  The same happens for an uninstall.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get keyboard support back?

VSS Writer failures during Hyper-V backup of VM with Oracle application installed

$

I am trying to backup a VM which before it had Oracle installed backed up with no problems.  It is a Windows 2008 R2 server which sites on an 8 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster (with CSVs).  I am using DPM 2012 R2 to run the backups which have been successful for the last few weeks but then Oracle was installed and the backups have failed since then.

The job fails and a large number of VSS writers go into a 'Failed' state with the 'Last Error' showing as 'Timed out'.  I then get 4 popups appear each referring to a 'temporary' drive which appears briefly in Disk Management with a RAW file system.  These pops say "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it.  Do you want to format it?" (where X: is replaced by the drive letter assigned to each 'temporary' drive).

The System event log is populated with a large number of warnings with Event 51, Disk, stating "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk<number>\DR<number> during a paging operation".  There are also a few warnings for Ntfs (eventid 57) stating that "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log.  Corruption may occur."

Prior to these warnings there are 5 other warnings for partmgr (eventid 58) stating "The disk signature of disk <number x> is equal to the disk signatuire of disk <number y>" and 4 errors (eventid 1, VDS Basic Provider), "Unexpected failure.  Error code: 490@01010004".

There is a script which is run to stop the Oracle application on the server and if this is run then the backups will complete successfully.  We have been troubleshooting this by running a certain amount of the script and seeing which part affects the backup and it seems that if the Weblogic (wls_reports) service is stopped then the backup will succeed but if it is running then the backup will fail and the above symptoms occur.

Another point which may help is that there is a pre-production server which resides on a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V standalone server, has the same scripts and installation of Oracle but backs up without any issues.

I have experienced VSS writer failures before with VM backups but I have not seen this before.  It is not intermittent and I can find no work around to alleviate the problem of having no backup (except stopping this service or shutting the server down, but as it is a production server this is not practical).

I have also posted this into the WSB forum under the following which may have further useful info:

VSS Writer failures during VM backup of server with Oracle application installed

If anyone has experienced this before or have any suggestions / advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Hyper V Replication: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'XXXXXXX': The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).

I have seen this error discussed at length and the common culprit seems to be A/V. This is not the case for me. I got this error when checking replication health on a VM that fails replication almost daily. I usually resume it and it syncs data and continues to successfully replicate to the DR site until it fails a day or two later. Now, it won't resume. There is no A/V to blame and I am at a loss. I have a 5 node cluster on a san for my primary and a 3 node cluster on a san for my secondary. I have 43 VMs that replicate normally with very few failures. Not sure if this is any help, but we run BizTalk on this VM.

Hi,

We are running one virtual machine win 2012 std. Recently, we deleted the snapshot of this vm in hyper-v manager as the drive space was running out of space. After that, the merging process was running for the VM. Once, the merging was completed, the sql database running inside got corrupted. Please explain what actually happens during this merging process and how can we recover our db.

svchost termsvcs Memory Leak

Hello,

It seems like we have a memory leak in the termsvcs process of our RDS farm which occasionally occurs on a random machine in our farm. We have 10 session hosts on Windows Server 2012 R2 with current patch level who all serve around 20 to 30 users.

In this screenshot you can see the CPU and RAM load. Notice the steady drop in memory within the last 24 hours http://i.imgur.com/dz11fPz.png

Here you can see the process in question with a very high value in Private Bytes:http://i.imgur.com/Rh9SfzI.png - and in comparison the same process on a healthy session host with the same configuration and roughly the same amount of users connected:http://i.imgur.com/FCMVclD.png

Notice the difference the Private Bytes.

Does anyone else experience something similar? It seemingly started a week ago. So maybe related to a patch day.

Monitor Replication Health in Failover Cluster Manager?

$
0

Have two Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clusters.

One Cluster contains all production VM's.The second cluster is on another location and is intended only for HA purposes. All production VM's from the first clusters should be replicated to the other cluster.

What is the best way to monitor the replication health of all VM's? In Failover Cluster manager, it's not possible to add a column "replication health" to the "roles" window. It's not practical to click on every VM to view the replication health. In Hyper-V Manager, it's easy to add "replication health" to the virtual machine window, but clicking on every host to verify the replication health is not very practical as well.

Thank you in advance for any hint (I know that we could use SCOM or something similar, but these complex tools are out of scope).

Hi, Im new to the Windows Server 2012 Core edition. But I have found out that I can install Hyper-v on a Windows Server Core edition.

I guess its possible to run Core edition with Hyper-V installed on a laptop. But can I run the VM´s with GUI directly on the Core edition or do I need another computer to manage the VM´s with GUI installed on the hyper-v host?

SE3016 on Hyper-v VM

2012 R2 core with Hyper-v 2012 R2 role on the physical server as the host. Guest OS is server 2012 r2. We are needing hard drive space and the least expensive thing to do is reuse our Rackables SE3016. My question is, when i install the SaS card, will the guest OS automagically find the new hardware and install the drivers? Or am i going to have to install the drivers on the host OS so the VM will then see it? How is this going to work
