Copying files to VM vhdx very, very slow!

Hi,

I am setting up my first Virtualised environment (Hyper-V 2012 R2) on a Dell Poweredge R720 and I am experiencing performance issues when copy files (around 500mb) from an existing physical server to a virtual Window 2012 R2 server.

The copying is saying that the throughput is around 10kbps/sec which is horrendously slow.

OK I will now describe what I have done so far.

Brand new sever was purchase from Dell and it has:

32GB of RAM
2 RAID virtual disks, the first in RAID 1 configuration with 2 x 2TB (2TB mirror) SAS 7200 hdds where I have installed my Windows 2012 R2 Core server. The second is RAID 5 with 3 x 2TB SAS 7200 hdds, total storage under 4TB.
Perc H310 Raid controller.
Twin Intel 2.4Ghz Quad core XEON CPUS

I have created 2 virtual machines under my host OS, the first is a Windows 2012 R2 backup domain controller(we have a Windows 2003 R2 physical server which has had its AD schema already upgraded as primary DC).

There is 1 forest, 1 domain, therefore, it is a small network.

When I am copying data or files from the physical server to the guest Windows 2012 R2 VM the throughput is very, very low. For 500MB it is going to take 4 hours.

I have created a 4 card NIC team on the hyper-visor to improve network throughput.

The VMs were created with a base 2GB dynamic RAM and a 200GB dynamic Vhdd and 1 processor.

What am I doing wrong?

I have read somewhere that:

1)I should be using fixed Virtual HDDs instead on dynamic ones. I should be doing the same with RAM as wel.
2) Change the Perc H310 for either a Perc H710 or Perc H710P, Perc H810.
3) Use 10K or 15K RPM drives. This would be expensive.

The server platform was not specified by me. The client told me that he wanted to virtualize his server and now I am experiencing severe bottlenecks.

What can I do to improve things dramatically?

Thanks

Regards

Ipnotech
