RemoteFX and windows 8.1

Hello,

I am currently running a VDI environment with server 2012 servers including a RDCB, RDVH, RDSH, RDWA and windows 8 clients. I am using remoteFX on the windows 8 clients with the help of 3 nvidia Quadro 6000 cards. RemoteFX works perfectly in windows 8; however, I built a windows 8.1 VM and remote FX will not work in this VM. When I log on to the vm and look under device manager the remoteFX device is listed but it gives an error of 43. All of the vm's have one monitor set in the remoteFX settings. In the event viewer of the windows 8.1 VM I am getting an error under RemoteDesktop Services vGPU-kModeDriver "The virtual GPU synthetic devie failed" and the other accompanying error is "The RDVGM kernal mode driver failed to start" I have removed all of the windows 8 VM's to confirm that all of the available memory of the GPU was not used and this didn't get any different results. The only difference I see is that one guest os is windows 8 and the other is 8.1. Does remoteFX not work in windows 8.1 by chance? Both OS's are Enterprise as well.

Thanks for any help,

Scott

The problem is, that I get the following error in the  Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'name' because the object was not found. The object might have been deleted. or you might not have permission to perform the task. Verify that the Virtual Machine Management service on the computer is running. If the service is running, try to perform the task again by using Run as Administrator.

This keepon happening whenever the cluster directory root name changed to Cluster Storage or ClusterStorage.000<o:p></o:p>

General Access Denied Error - Hyper-V

$

Hi

We have a Hyper-V 2012 3 node cluster, the VMs are stored on a Server 2012 based 2 node Scale Out File Server.

We created this setup from new in October 2013 and it has generally worked OK since but we do get the occasional "General Access Denied Error (0x80070005)" when we try to live migrate a virtual machine.  The instructions in the below TechNet article do not work for us - the result indicates success but when we try the Live Migration again we get the same error message.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906/en-gb

I have in the past resolved this by removing the virtual machine from Failover Cluster Manager, migrating it via Hyper-V Manager, logging on to the destination Hyper-V host and re-importing it to Failover Cluster Manager from there.

However last night I was doing some system maintenance and went to drain a host via Failover Cluster Manager.  The host had around 20 VMs on it and only two VMs successfully migrated - the other VMs did not migrate and now I cannot move them from that host for love nor money!

The Event Log for FCM indicates they have the "General Access Denied" error.

I have tried the following:

  • Use instructions in above mentioned TechNet article (shows success, but same error happens when I try to Live Migrate)
  • Tried the method I have mentioned above (removing from FCM etc.).  Get the Access Denied message
  • Checking the folder permissions on the "Virtual Machines" folder where XMLs are stored.  Permissions appear OK for all Hyper-V hosts (also checked the VMs VHD permissions)
  • Trying the Live Migration directly on Hyper-V host rather than via a Constrained Delegation scenario
  • Checking Constrained Delegation in AD (seems fine as per when I set it up in October)
  • Checking permissions on the Scale Out File Server

With regards to the Scale Out File Server I have noticed in the past some odd permissions things going on.  I have seen the permissions for the Hyper-V hosts going from (for example) "Full Access" on "This Folder, Subfolders & Files" to random things like " Read/Modify" on "This Folder Only".  Manually changing the permissions back to Full Control resolves the issue, but does not stop it recurring again.

So I'm a bit confused really!  It looks like a mixed basket of permissions issues going on!  Some of our most critical machines are on that host at the moment and they cannot be moved.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks

slow throughput on routing between two subnets at Hyper-V Host.

The transfer between two hyper-v VM´s is very slow, when enabling the routing on hyper-v server.

(I enabled the routing by reg. key "IPEnableRouter" on Hyper-V Host, then restarted. Not using role RRAS and routing)

Hyper V has a virtual adapter for each VM-Net, and each a physical for external network.

VM 1 Subnet : 1.1.1.0
VM 1 Host Adapter : 1.1.1.1
VM 1 Guest Adapter : 1.1.1.2

VM 2 Subnet : 1.1.2.0
VM 2 Host Adapter : 1.1.2.1
VM 2 Guest Adapter : 1.1.2.2

At each side of the pyhiscal NIC´s are PCs.
The PC´s from subnet 1 must be able to reach the VM Guest at subnet 2.

Each PC has a static Route for the other Subnet via the pyhsical NIC of the Hyper-V Host.

From subnet 1 to subnet 2 via the PC´s the RX is excellent , but the TX is as slow 30Kbit/s

Transfer between guests an host is excellent. Between guest 1 and guest 2 RX an TX ist about 30Kbit/s

Transfer from PC subnet 1 to Hyper V guest 1 isexcellent.
Transfer from PC subnet 2 to Hyper V guest 2 is
excellent, so the network is o.K.

Why is the IP Forwarding such slow?

Hyper V Host : MS Server 2012
Guests : 2008 R2
PC: Windows 7

Thanks Tobias

Advice Requested - High Availability WITHOUT Failover Clustering

$

We're creating an entirely new Hyper-V virtualized environment on Server 2012 R2.  My question is:  Can we accomplish high availability WITHOUT using failover clustering?

So, I don't really have anything AGAINST failover clustering, and we will happily use it if it's the right solution for us, but to be honest, we really don't want ANYTHING to happen automatically when it comes to failover.  Here's what I mean:

In this new environment, we have architected 2 identical, very capable Hyper-V physical hosts, each of which will run several VMs comprising the equivalent of a scaled-back version of our entire environment.  In other words, there is at least a domain controller, multiple web servers, and a (mirrored/HA/AlwaysOn) SQL Server 2012 VM running on each host, along with a few other miscellaneous one-off worker-bee VMs doing things like system monitoring.  The SQL Server VM on each host has about 75% of the physical memory resources dedicated to it (for performance reasons).  We need pretty much the full horsepower of both machines up and going at all times under normal conditions.

So now, to high availability.  The standard approach is to use failover clustering, but I am concerned that if these hosts are clustered, we'll have the equivalent of just 50% hardware capacity going at all times, with full failover in place of course (we are using an iSCSI SAN for storage).

BUT, if these hosts are NOT clustered, and one of them is suddenly switched off, experiences some kind of catastrophic failure, or simply needs to be rebooted while applying WSUS patches, the SQL Server HA will fail over (so all databases will remain up and going on the surviving VM), and the environment would continue functioning at somewhat reduced capacity until the failed host is restarted.  With this approach, it seems to me that we would be running at 100% for the most part, and running at 50% or so only in the event of a major failure, rather than running at 50% ALL the time.

Of course, in the event of a catastrophic failure, I'm also thinking that the one-off worker-bee VMs could be replicated to the alternate host so they could be started on the surviving host if needed during a long-term outage.

So basically, I am very interested in the thoughts of others with experience regarding taking this approach to Hyper-V architecture, as it seems as if failover clustering is almost a given when it comes to best practices and high availability.  I guess I'm looking for validation on my thinking.

So what do you think?  What am I missing or forgetting?  What will we LOSE if we go with a NON-clustered high-availability environment as I've described it?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Cannot add VM to Cluster

We have have Hyper-V 2012 Cluster with 2 Nodes that runs about 10 VMs, mostly Server 2008 R2 with a few 2012. Cluster storage is and iSCSI SAN with DSS7 from Open-e.

I have a VM that I cannot add to the Cluster.  Its Server 2012 that runs Exchange 2013 with about 50 mailboxes.   When I go to the Failover Cluster Manager the VM does not show up.  I have had no problems adding any other VMs.

I am trying to determine why I cannot add this VM to the Cluster.

Hello,

when creating/moving a hyperv-vm to a windows-share i get the following error :

keyboard layout messed up

I'm unable to use the shift key with numbers and the backspace key also doesn't work when viewing my hyper-v vm.  the shift key works intermittently but not always, when trying to capitalise alpha characters.  it's very strange, because it doesn't do this when viewing the host machine.

the host machine is viewed via a remote client (tight vnc).  during this remote session, I launch hyper-v and view the vm through the in-built viewer in hyper-v.  it's only here that I have problems with the keyboard layout.  I've checked to see if sticky keys is enabled, but isn't as far as I can tell.

there are no problems with the physical keyboard as it works for the physical machine and when connecting by remote to the host machine via tight vnc.

Can we make a (Hyper -V) Verchual Machine as a primery domain controller.

Hello,

Please advise what would be the best option for me, if I have ten to fifteen users in my organization.

Use domain controller as a file server

Use virtual   machine (Hyper V) as a domain controller and host as a file server.

I am thinking to use Host as a file server and use virtual machine as a domain controller.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Slow VM disk performance on WS2012 Hyper-V cluster

Hi everybody,

I am having a pretty annoying problem with our Hyper-V Cluster. One, and only one of our VMs keeps getting into a state where disk performance is absolutely horrible (a few tens of KBps on sequential transfers). The interactive performance in a RDP is also affected.

However, as soon as I do a Live Migration to the second node in the cluster, the performance goes back up to where it should be. Live Migrating it back to the original cluster node keeps the performance up, that is until a few hours later, at most a couple of days, the performance goes back to being horrible. Apply, rinse, repeat.

In the parent partition on that cluster node, the disk performance is just fine, irregardless of what happens in the VM. No abnormal CPU usage to be seen, either in the parent, or in the VM. No particular events logged either. The Live Migration is also pretty slow when the VM is in the affected state, moving it back performs observably faster (i.e., once the problem is "reset" through live migrating it on the second node).

The cluster is WS2012, the VM is also WS2012. It only functions as a file server, no other software installed, not even an antivirus. The VM is however relatively large (4 vCPUs, 32 GB RAM, a 120 GB dynamic VHDx as a system drive, and a 24 TB dynamic VHDx as storage for the file share).

There are a few mentions online about similar problems, but no concrete tips on what could cause it. Anybody have any ideas?

Hello,

Sorry for my english, I'm french and I hope my message will be easy to understand.

I have a probleme with hvremote and hyperV server : I want to add remote management access to users but I won't give them admin access. I've try the command hvremote /add:domain\user /explicit, the command is a success but I can't manage my server with my user... if I use the command hvremote /add:domain\user, it work (but with admin rights)
In fact : I want to have one or two admin, and other users in groups with differents authorisations : a groupe which can creat VM, launch VM..., a group wich can't creat VM but can launch thems...

Do you know how can I do to do that ?

Thank you very much and sorry again for my english lvl.

Hi i would like to check if my configuration is working well.

Actually i have win server 2012 on a vm it's my DC.

when i do a nslookup i have localhost and adress 127.0.0.1

In my dhcp i can see my clients and they can join the DC.

I have internet connexion on my client the icon is showing internet access i can browse website but i cant ping 8.8.8.8 or google for example.

i m pretty sure this is a dns issue.but i dont know where?

in my dns configuration i have added the suffixe in order mydomain.com

when i ping 8.8.8.8 from DC i can see non-existent domain

from my clients i can ping DC, but cant ping 8.8.8.8, cant ping google.com but i can browse internet!

when i do nslookup google.com i can see all google ip's

my question are:

In my DNS config what ip should i use for forwarders ip , I set the forwarders ip to : 8.8.8.8 is that ok?

is this the probleme?
