Not able to manage virtual machines when they are off in a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster environment

Hi I'm wondering if anyone else has encounter this weird problem: I have a 3-node Windows 2012 enterprise hyper-v cluster. If a virtual machine is shut off I can't manage it. When I right click on the virtual machine and choose Settings it gives me an error" Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer "hyper-v-host1" because the object was not found". But if I move the virtual machine to a different node then everything will be fine(doesn't matter if I move it back or not). To me it feels like the host is not able to refresh the virtual machine's settings and by moving the VM it is able to refresh and let me change the settings after.

Any help is appreciated.

Access Slow On Hyper-V (Server 2012). Needs To Be Rebooted Daily.

I have a couple access databases that were migrated from Server 2003 to a virtual server on 2012. About a month after the migration they started running really slow when more than one user had the database open. I went through all the common fixes for access and none of them worked. I put the virtual host in its own group and made a new policy so that it wouldnt be burded with extra virus scanning. Nothing is fixing this problem.

I moved one of the database back to the old 2003 server and it runs fine there, even though this server has a fraction of the power of the new server and is using half its resources. Also the server 2012 that is having the problem is hardly using any resources at all. 1-3% processor!

Rebooting the virtual server every morning seems to help, I have been doing that the last three days. Maybe there is something being effected after the backups every night?

Anyone have any suggestions?

VM bandwidth management does not work

Hi,

We have a Hyper-V 2012 R2 host running on a DELL Poweredge R410 using the built-in Broadcom NetXtreme NIC drivers.  We have a VM running Windows 2008 R2 with the Integration Services installed.  The problem we have with this is the Bandwidth Management option in the VM settings using Hyper-V manager does not work.

As a test I set the maximum bandwidth to 5Mbps and attempted to copy a file from a physical server, but no change in file copy speed was noticed (~50MBytes/sec).

I have tried shutting down the VM and restarting the VM (the host has not been restarted), and also used powershell command "Set-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName VM -MaximumBandwidth 5000000" to no avail.

TCP/IP Advanced Adapter Settings

We have a host server (2012r2) set up with 4 virtual machines (2008R2 and 2012) on it.  The host server has network cards that are on the HCL list.  For performance tuning, do I still need to disable the Jumbo packet, Large-Send Offload, and the IPv4 checksum offload settings?  Or has 2012R2 taken care of some of the networking issues from 2012?  We plan on running 5 2012r2 hosts, each with 3-4 2012r2 web servers and 1-2008r2 ActiveWebGrabber (pdf generator) server.  I am curious is we still need to tune the hosts network cards, the Team, and the virtual network cards on all of the virtual machines.  Thank you.

We tried running this previously, but did not have network cards on the HCL and did not have the checksum etc settings disabled.  Very slow results and it would blocked itself and take a bit of time for the packets to clear.

unable to create External Virtual Networks

hello, running server 2008 r2 hyper-v core build 6.1.7600 on HP ProLiant DL380 G6

I have 4 physical NICs and was trying to create 4 external virtual switches in Virtual Network Manager with or without the "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter"option, like I have already done on a couple of other hyper-v core. Get one of the following behaviors:

1. stuck in "Applying changes" or "cannot enumerate network adapters" forever. At which point either the NVSPWMI (hyper-v network management) service stops and i have to restart it, or restart the hyper-v box

2. or get "Error applying new virtual network changes. setup switch failed." NVSPWMI occasionally stops and have to restart the service.

3. or get "cannot bind to "hp nc328i.." because it is already bound to another virtual network". When i get this error i try to restart NVSPWMI, then use nvspbind /u option or /d vms_pp to unbind the vms_pp service at which point I go back to issue #1 and keep cycling through these issues regardless of which one of the 4 adapters i try to configure. Occasionally I can add a virtual switch without the "Allow management..." option and then check the option later, but its not consistent with the other adapters. At the very most I can have one External virtual adapter.

Tried the following:

a. netcfg -u vms_pp ; netcfg -c p -i vms_pp; to remove all Virtual Adapters and reconfigure.

b. removed the Physical adapters and reinstalled using devcon.exe. and updated drivers from version 5... to 7... something.

c. removed all virtual adapters running regedit as system user using PsExec.exe utility. I also mistakenly removed the Microsoft Virtual Switch Adapter, and then reimported the regedit key once I realized I did that. However the netcfg -c p -i vms_pp should take care of that.

d. nvspbind utility with either /u /b /e /d options for the respective adapter.

Spent about 10 hours trying every possible scenario to have at least 3 much needed virtual adapters running for this production box, have one slave DC and DFS on this hyperv. I have till Tuesday to get it to work, and only left option for me at this point is to rebuild the entire server. I heard that removing and reinstalling the HyperV core service does not always fix the issue, because you are supposed to install these adapters in a certain order.

Anyone have any other suggestion for me to try? Probably going to rebuild this Sunday 1/19 or Monday 1/20.

v-HBA Guest VM cannot Live Migration

Hi All,

I'm using Windows Server 2012 Data Center OS and configured the for the hyper-V server role with Fail-over cluster (4 Node – Cluster).

Each Physical server installed with Two Qlogic HBA Adapters.

We have configured following configuration on hyper-v Server and SAN (HP) storage.

  • Enabled the Virtual SAN Manager.
  • Created Each Hyper-V Host Virtual Fiber channel Switch. Each Host configured two adapters. (Fibre Channel SAN 1 /  Fibre Channel SAN 2) .
  • Using the HP storage and enabled the switch port level (N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV).
  • Created new VM and assign new two vHBA Adapters. Each adapter having two sets of wwn numbers.
  • Each Adapter SET A wwn Address discovered by SAN switch and configured the zone . However SET B not discovered but we manually created the zone for SET B for both Adapters.
  • Present the Storage to the VM and installed the MPIO. SAN disk visible on the VM disk management.
  • During the live migrate the VM to different host I’m getting below error.

I need some support from Expert for this issue. I’m trying to configure the Guest Cluster with HBA. The Quick Migration working fine but still failing with live migration. there is ram and space in drive. Tried to run windows update and restarted hyper-V.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Backup Server 2008 R2 Offline Only

Hello,

Since upgrading a host from 2012 to 2012 R2 I can no longer take "Online" backups of a Server 2008 R2 machine. It has the latest integration components, VSS is happy, the VM has a SCSI adapter. Everything worked OK under 2012 but not under R2 it seems the VM has to be suspended before backups.

Anyone know of a solution?

Windows Server Backup/Restore - mirrored physical to virtual

Scenario:

Server A is a Windows 2008 server with software mirrored drives running incremental backup to removable media

Server A dies but I have a working backup - seed/incrementals.

I bring in Server B and want to recover from the server A's backup media.

We have done this for non-software-mirrored situations - what would we have to do when the source is software-mirrored? Create two VHD's in the VM to be recovered to?

Hyper-V Replica from 2012 R2 to 2012

Hi Guys,

Hope you are all doing well.

i have a questions about Hyper-V replica feature, in our company we just upgrade Hyper-V failover cluster from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2. Right now hyper-v cluster release in the primary site is 2012 R2 however the replica site is still running 2012.

before upgrade:

Primary site ( hyper-v cluster with 4 nodes) ( windows 2012)

replica site ( hyper-V cluster with 2 nodes ) (Windows 2012 )


both sites are joined to our Active directory.

32 Mbps WAN Link speed.

replication was working perfectly with no problems between 2 sites.

after upgrade:

 

Primary site ( hyper-v cluster with 4 nodes) ( windows 2012 R2)

replica site ( hyper-V cluster with 2 nodes ) (Windows 2012 - not upgraded yet)

both sites are joined to our Active directory.

32 Mbps WAN Link speed.

replication does not work after upgrade.

nothing changed except the upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2

should we upgrade the cluster at the replica site?? is there any software required  for Hyper-V Replica to operate successfully.

Hello,

Since 2 days, I have an error message that appears every 2 hours. Indeed, the "LicensingUI.exe" file is not found. This causes a reboot to all my virtual machines! 

What can I do to fix it please ? It is very detrimental.

What are the things we can check for restarting of this VM.

Routing issue

I have a 2K12 hyperV machine with 2 NIcs (192..1.11 & 192..112)

I recently downloaded an appliance that creates a private switch with a network id 192.168.56.1, and the VM has 192.168.56.101. From IE or Chrome on the win 2012 box, when I typehttp://192.168.56.101 I reach the machine (web site inside it) but I can not do it from another machine (laptop or desktop they are on the same network as the hyper-V 192.168.1...) using IE or chrome. pinging the ip from the hyperv machine responds but not from others. I checked the route print and have this on the hyper-V

192.168.56.0    255.255.255.0         On-link      192.168.56.1    261
 192.168.56.1  255.255.255.255         On-link      192.168.56.1    261

the question is why I can connect from the machine itself but not others? What is needed to be added in the routing table on the other machines in order to be able to join this appliance from another machine

I can't understand if Windows7 Pro Edition supported for dynamic memory in Hyper-v 2012R2

Here it's marked as supported:

But my vm writes to system log that dynamic memory driver failed... for this OS edition.

Should i switch to VMware for correct memory balooning in Windows7 Pro?

run hyper-v on physical machine with server 2012

I currently am running windows 8.1 with several 8.1 hyper-v clients. I am about to have to do a new install of the host os because i am getting a new faster drive. The convenience and speed of backing up and moving hyper-v clients to different systems is so easy i was hoping i could take advantage of it for the future. i would also like to use some of the functions of windows only available in the server edition of windows. as a dreamspark student you can get a free copy of windows server 2012. I have not set up a windows server, but i have run a Linux and bsd one. I only have 1 physical machine. Does it make sense at all to install windows server 2012 and then have all of my working systems be hyper-v clients? i play games and have a nice graphics card. the clients i don't think use them directly, but would use it via the host i think. I also use visual studio for app dev and i beliebe VS installs a Virtual like machine for windows phone. Can i do this? what would it prevent me from doing that i currently do? is there a better way to go about this? maybe do the reverse and run the server in hyper-v? thanks

Hyper v cluster and storage

I am looking to set up a hyper v cluster using server 2012 and a NAS storage with an addition DAS attached via SAS.  Should I also attach the clustered servers to the NAS via SAS. The network is only a 1gb and I would have between 10 and 15 servers as VM's.  Any thought would help.

I am using Hyper V manager on 2008 R2.

Now I have one 2012 R2 server core hyper V without domain, I want to manage this server core hyper V with Hyper V manager on 2008 R2.

When I add/connect, it display credential wrong. (use command net use drive works)

May I know is it a must to join domain?

Hyper-v 2012 R2 server core recommendations for single server setup

Hi All,

Next weekend I will be installing a brand new Dell 720 server for a client of mine.

I would like to hear some recommendations on how to install this hypervisor.

Let me state that I have had some experience with virtualization technology  in the past with VMWARE ESXi.

This is a small client with under 10 users but I have learned that with the 2012 product offering you cannot get Small Business Server any more. I know Microsoft has Windows server 2012 Essentials but you would have to have Exchange server in the cloud which my client does not want. He wants to run his Exchange server in house.

Also he needs Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Server) because his accounting application requires it.

He has an existing Windows 2003 domain controller that eventually has to be decommissioned because it is too old and slow.

So I thought I install Hyper-v 2012 R2 core on the new server and then create 2 VMs:

1) Windows 2012 STD to run as a secondary domain controller.

2) Windows 2012 STD member server with Exchange server 2013 and Remote Desktop Services role.  

My questions here are these:

1) Do I install the Hypervisor in workgroup or domain mode?

2) When I am finished with the old server do I transfer the AD FSMO roles onto the VM that is acting as a domain controller?

The new server has 2 CPUs. How does Microsoft licensing go here? I know that Windows 2012 STD gives me 2 instances with the same product key on the same server for 1 CPU. What happens if you have 2?

Can someone give me some insight on how to go about this? I remember that I found this easier with VMWARE Esxi.

Now with Hyper-V I need to also get a management workstation with Windows 8 professional on it to manage the Hyper-V core server.
