When restarting Hyper-V server on Windows 2016 it shuts down.

Hi

We are unable to restart the Hyper-V Windows 2016 server: when restarting the Hyper V Server it shuts down instead, and we need to physically push the power button on the server in order to start it again.

The Virtual Windows 2016 server does not have this problem, and restarts fine.

In the event Viewer we have the following information:

The process C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe (HYPERV) has initiated the restart of computer HYPERV on behalf of user HYPERV\Administrator for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found

Reason Code: 0x800000ff

Shutdown Type: restart

Comment:

Event ID: 1074

*****

We had tryed to shutdown via command like shutdown /r .

And we have got following sugestion:

A

click start and type power plan and select 'choose a power plan' from the list

next to the power plan that is selected click 'change plan settings'

click 'change advanced power settings'

under power buttons and lid set power button and sleep button (and lid if its there) to do nothing.

should prevent events from power button.

B

Go to "Settings"

Select "System"

Select "Power and Sleep"

Select "Additional Power Settings"

Select "Choose what the power buttons do"

Select "Change settings currently available"

Ensure that "Turn on fast start up" is deselected (unticked)

Click on "Save Changes"

The sugestion did not help

A hint would be nice

Windows 10 VM Activation in Hyper-V

Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2016 server running and have Hyper-V role installed via Server Manager. I have installed Windows 10 Pro 1903 as a VM within Hyper-V. Can I activate this VM with AVMA? I was researching this and only seem to find articles where the automatic activation applies to Server VMs. Thanks in advance for the insight!

LiveMigration is not going on 10 GbE adapters....

Hi Guys,

  • I am dealing with a quite interesting problem when migrating VMs from Hyper-V cluster 2012R2 to Hyper-V Cluster 2019.

The old infrastructure was connected 1x LM adapter directly, I forbid this connection, put the old infrastructure 10 GbE cards and connected with the new 10 GbE SW, which is connected to the new infrastructure.

In the old cluster, I set live migration to run on a 10GbE network - 192.168.140.0/24 - the same in the new cluster.

I set up a delegation in AD.

If I have 192.168.140.0/24 set in the hyper-v settings on the source cluster and want to migrate the VM to the new Hyper-V - migration fails ... if I set at using "any" then the data flows through the production network ... ie max 1 GbE ...

ping between all servers at 10 GbE - fine
If I am migrating VM in 2012R2 cluster - live migration - OK - 10 GbE
If I am migrating VM in 2019 cluster - live migration - OK - 10 GbE
if I have set in hyper-v settings to use any adapter - migrates, but only after gig ...

"Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source" Failed to copy file.

On HyperV1 (source) i have set use theese IP "192.168.140.0/24" on destination same settings...

This is already the second customer and the same problem as if hyper-v ignored the new 10GbE retina. Is it possible to set priority / weight etc.?

Below is an orientation diagram

Get-ClusterNetwork | ft Name, Metric, AutoMetric, Role

Name               Metric AutoMetric             Role

Windows 10 VM on Server 2019 Hyper-V

Has anyone had any issues building a Windows 10 VM on Server 2019 with Hyper-V installed?

I keep getting OOBE errors (Keyboard, Region, etc) but if I build using the same ISO on my Windows 10 Hyper-V then it builds fine.

Quite a number of people of having issues and there are workarounds but if the ISO is working fine then surely something else is causing the issue?

Hi,

Need your advised on this error. Already removed security permission and use as local account user.
I'm using administrators privileged or even login to local administrator of my windows, but same error. Cannot attached .vhdx file but I tried other vhdx file which I can and no problem encountered.

This vhd is created in Windows server 2012 std Hyper-V Manager and trying to import or attached to my Windows 10 Hyper-V.

Hi guy's,

We have a VM (hyper v) that had an unallocated space.

I tried to transfer that spase to host. So I power off this VM and run the powershell.. " Resize-VHD –ToMinimumSize..." now my VM is refusing to power on..

What Can I do now? I need that VM..

I tried to inspect the avhdx but didn't get reconnect option..

If I enter to the settings of the VM I can see that the attached AVHDX is referring to a small file:

and this is the that the VM uses:

But It couldn't be a small file because I know that this VM has much more (16Tb +-)  so, Can I reconnect The 16...KB file to the VM?

I'f I try to do that I get this warning:

What Should I do?

Moti

Error while removing snapshots Cannot delete checkpoint: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

Hello,

When I try to remove all snapshots of a specific VM I get the following error:
Cannot delete checkpoint: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002).

This VM originally had 2 vhdx files. Later a third disk was added just temporarily.
During backups the machine created some checkpoints and the machine was running on avhdx files.

After that the temporarly avhdx files and vhdx files were deleted from the vm.

Now we can't do a export, live migration or we can't even remove the snapshots by running:
get-vmsnapshot -computername "computername" -vmname "vmname"| remove-vmsnapshot

The machine itself is still running fine, but we need to move the VM.

Any ideas how to fix this? I think we need to delete delete the removed .avhdx files from a configuration file.
But this is not possible in the .vmcx files as far as i know.

Thank you in advance.

Dear Community,

I have a notebook with windows 10. The notebook has 2 network adapters: Ethernet and Wireless Lan. Of course, I'm travelling so both adapters are used with dhcp in different networks. I already switched on Hyper-V.

I want to install a linux guest system (suse linux) with a special database. But I'm not sure how to configure.

How can I setup the virtual switches?

I need to connect to the linux with a fix hostname (the IP can differ), so I can use the database.

When I’am at home I also want use the linux more and also connect the linux to the internet.

Kind Regards

Martina

Hello All,

I am trying to create a VM in Hyper-v (type 1 hypervisor) server that I just stood up. When I go to create the VM this is the error that I get. I received the first error in the screen shot then I shutdown and deleted the VM and when I recreated it I received the error in the second screen shot.

I tried rebooting the host but that did not work. Any thoughts?

unable to ping default gateway

Hi All

1.i am new to hyperv, This is the first virtual machine i am creating. i am having a virtual machine server01 which is perfectly working,  i have created a new virtual machine server02 similar to server01 settings, i.e same VLAN. VM settings of Server01 an Server02 are similar.

Windows Firewall is disabled on Server02 and Server01
i have disabled network card and enabled.
checked network card properties of server1 and server02-Client for microsoft networks-Advanced VLAN ID is 0 for both the servers.
Default gateway settings, DNS setting are same for both the servers.
RDP is enabled on Server02
I was able to join server02 to domain and i can see my domain name on the network card ie(ncpa.cpl) of server02.

The issue is i am not able to ping default gateway from Server02 nor i am able to RDP the server but hostname and ip is resolving when i do nslookup from my jumpserver. experts guide me on this.

2. On VMware we have concept of vmware tools, in hyperv is there anything like this.

Why does VMs are not releasing their memory? W2012R2 fully patched, 4 VMs and no free memmory available

My H-V Host: Dell R720 - 32 GB of RAM

VM Name Min  Max Needing
VM01 1024  4096 1700
VM02 2048 6192 4200
VM03 1024  2048 1200
VM04 6000 (no dynamic memory)
VM05 4096 (no dynamic Memory)

Based on task manager, =~9 GB of RAM available
No backup in progress

So, i tried to change the RAM of the VM04 to 12GB, 10Gb, even 8GB...
The VM03 has refused to start due to low memory

So i´ve shutted down, VM03, still no memory available to start VM04
So i´ve shutted down, VM02, still no memory available to start VM04
So i´ve shutted down, VM01, still no memory available to start VM04

RAMMap and VMMAP and ProcExplorer wern´t able to find what was eating up the RAM

Even with all VMs stopped (beside VM05).. still no memory available to start VM04

What i did: after a reboot of the HV Host.. everything was fine

Why is that?
and how do diagnose?
If happens again in the future, what should I try?

Firmware options missing

I have a virtual machine set up on a Windows 2012 datacenter server.  I want to set up a second one.  I created one and made sure that all of the settings were identical to the first one.  But it won't boot -- you get a DOS level boot error when you try.  In the course of troubleshooting this, I discovered that the booting is controlled from the firmware option of settings.  But the settings on my machine don't include firmware

Can someone tell me how to make this option appear?

Run out of space in merge huge AVHDX file. any idea what to do?

I Hope you will help me with a huge problem..

The problem start in one of our VM in hyper V.

I had a 2TB unallocated space in that machine (win server 16) it and I wanted to move this space to the host (win server 16). so from the host I run a powershell to shrink space of this VM. BUT.. I had checkpoint on this VM (!!)..

So after the shrink process I couldn't power on that VM.

This VM had a 16TB hard disk.. (and no backup)..

In the end I had one VHD that was 30GB on AVHDX that have 500GB (this was the newest/latest checkpoint) and one more AVHDX with 15+TB..

After a lot of error message (mismatch etc) I decided to start merging the two AVHDX to the parent VHD. the first AVHDX (the 500GB) merged fine. now I need to merge the 16 TB to the parent.

before the second merge process I enter to the settings of that VM (in the host).. In the hard disk I saw that this VM is pointing to the first AVHDX (that is not exist because I did the first merge process with that file) so of course the VM didn't power on... I didn't wanted to point the hard disk to the second AVHDX (the 16 TB ) so because of that I started the second merge..

In that server (host) I had 5.5 TB free so I started the merging process. Now I have 400GB so I paused the merging process. the VHD is something about 6.5TB and the AVHDX is still 16TB.

How can I increase the C drive? If I add external 10TB USB drive. how can I increase C drive with that USB?

What will happens if i'll cancel the merge processes now and change the AVHDX in settings of this VM manually?

I so need to get to the files in that VM.. So Frustration...

Hyper-v export and import logs

Hi,

I've had problems importing exported hyper-v virtual machines recently. I have also just exported and received no confirmation of the completion of the export.

In which of the hyper-v event logs is this information logged?

Thanks.

Windows 8.1 pro Remotefx USB redirection

$

We need local USB redirection from Windows Server 2019 host to Windows 8.1 Hyper-V guest.

On Windows 10 Pro guest, the redirection is working, meaning that all host settings and guest settings are correct.

In the connection bar, the little additional icon appears and devices connected to the host can be redirected to the guest.

However same setting with Windows 8.1 Pro does not work. RemoteFx USB devices can be selected from the enhanced session settings but they never appear in the guest nor is there the little additional icon.

From sources we learned that this is only possible with Windows 8.1 Enterprise? Really? Why is it working with Windows 10 Pro but not with Windows 8.1 Pro? This does not make sense.

Please add the missing drivers to Windows 8.1 Pro so that RemoteFx USB redirection can be used.
