Hyper-V Failover Cluster in Windows Server 2019: Formatting Cluster Shared Volumes with ReFS or NTFS?

$

Hi Guys,

I had a conversation with my colleague this morning about formatting CSVs for a Hyper-V Failover Cluster. According to my personal knowledge, formatting a CSV by using NTFS was the way to go. I had some restricions for ReFS in my mind and this seemed to be correct for Windows Server 2016 at least:

"Always use NTFS for your Cluster Shared Volumes even though Hyper-V VMs are now supported on ReFS in Windows Server 2016. The only exception is when using Storage Spaces Direct in which case you should use ReFS. A big reason for using NTFS is that when using ReFS for Cluster Shared Volumes it always runs in file system redirection mode which means all I/O is sent over the cluster network to the coordinator node for the volume (this is why RDMA network adapters are recommended with Storage Spaces Direct for the cluster network) rather than nodes using Direct IO to access disks directly. Also remember that with Storage Spaces Direct there is no shared storage anyway so all access is essentially redirected."

Source: https://www.itprotoday.com/windows-8/ntfs-or-refs-cluster-shared-volumes-windows-server-2016 - But also seen in many other blogs.

But now I'm curious: Whilst finding so many smart blog entries to Server 2016 - I can't find any reliable source that is either reassuring or negating this statement for Windows Server 2019. There were improvements for both, ReFS and Hyper-V - so it sounds quite promising - yet i don't get any information regarding that CSV-topic.

Are there any experiences you'd like to share?

Hyper-V Production Checkpoint - "Application state wasn't included..." & Veeam Backups Failing

$

I have been working with Veeam support on an issue that is causing our backups to fail due to VSS issues. Veeam fails the job because it sees failures in the VSS writers.

When I run a "production" backup in Hyper-V, which should grab the "application state" I receive the below message, which to mean contradicts what a "production" backup is supposed to do, backup up the application state.

When I run: "vssadmin list writers", I do see a few that say "Timed out"

The issue is across W2K12R2, W10, W2K16 and W2K19 guest systems.

We have also looked over the event log and nothing stands out as well as what is causing the issue. I created a clone of one of the VMs and re-registered the .DLLs but that did not fix it as well.

Production Checkpoint - Application State Wasn't Included

Coming from VMware I am still working on learning some of the different technologies in Hyper-V. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019 - RD Virtualization Host feature missing

I'm trying to use Hyper-V Server 2019 as a virtualization host; This fails.

I have 3 computers;

  1. domain controller
  2. Windows Server 2019, which will be RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access
  3. Hyper-V Server 2019, which will be RD Virtualization Host

When I attempt to install this using Server Manager, RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access installation succeeds, but RD Virtualization Host fails.

Investigating further, the feature is missing! Here's some PowerShell, confirming I am running Hyper-V Server 2019 (downloaded today, 3 July 2019), and the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host feature simply not there!

According to Using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 for VDI – Matthijs's blog I would have expected to something like this, clearly showing "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host" as a component;

But that doesn't appear on Hyper-V Server 2019.

Hence...

Add-WindowsFeature –Name RDS-Virtualization

...simply doesn't work.

How do install "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host" on Hyper-V Server 2019?

AVHDX files without existing snapshots (Hyper-V 2016)

Hi guys,

I accidentally found out some AVHDX files for one of the virtual machine drives.

I inspected SQL-CPH2-OS.vhdx and got this.

So as you can see it is not referring to any of AVHDX files.

I also checked whether a snapshot or snapshots exist for this server but found nothing.

If someone ever had the similar situation please advise if it is safe to delete those AVHDX files.

Hyper-V replication remove disks

Hyper-V 2019, Server 2019

VM has four VHDXs. Need to remove two from replication.

Compiled statement:

Set-VMreplication "Server" -ReplicatedDisks (Get-VMHardDiskDrive "Server" -ControllerType SCSI -ControllerNumber 0 -ControllerLocation 2).

This will remove Disks from ControllerLocation 0,1,3 But I need to remove from 3 too.

How would I construct it?

Hyper-V Manager won't connect to Hyper-V Server on same workgroup and network

Hi,

I have been managing my Hyper-V Server from the same machine for several months.  Today I cannot connect to my server.  When I try to connect, I get an error that says my User ID is not valid.  I can connect with my user id and password no problem through RDP or on the server directly.  I did not change anything other than apply updates this week.  Why can't I connect to my server like I always have??  My User ID and password IS correct and my ID has full admin rights.

Not sure what to do here.

Guest Fails To Shut Down On Host Power Off

$

I have a guest VM (Windows Server 2019) set to shut down when the host (Also Server 2019) shuts down, however when the host is turned off the guest fails to shut down.

The error message is "'(VM Name)' failed to perform the 'Shutting Down' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Shutting Down'."

I am able to successfully power off the guest from the Hyper-V toolbar, which I assume confirms that the shutdown integration service is working correctly.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Server Design

Hi,

We have a client with an ML350 HP Server, who generate a large amount of files, and are running into storage issues.

We want to determine the best way for ward, given their current hardware, but so that they can increase there storage 'easily' in future. There is one 'trick' with this setup though, which I will explain, and which cannot be varied - so please don't bother explaining to me why it's a bad idea - I know it is, but explain that to the guy spending the money........

So I will lay out - the current setup, the 'one trick', 'The issue, and my thoughts/concerns for future issues.

Current Setup:

HP ML350 with 4 x 1.8TB 10k SAS drives, in RAID 10 (So 3.6Tb storage) - runing as a single 'Physical' Windows 2012R2 server.

They currently have 3.3Tb used on the single partition, and are growing the data at a consistent 30Gb per week. (So 10 weeks til a full disk, give or take some archiving)

The 'Trick':

The customer insists on having their Main Data share (effectively, all of their usable data) synced through Dropbox, so that they can access it offsite. They use Autodesk etc, so RDS, Teamviewer etc. etc. are all to laggy for remote work.

The Issue:

We can easily add more disks into the server, in whatever RAID/Flavour we want - but Dropbox only syncs to one location. Lets say the Dropbox folder (Which contains 3Tb of files), currently sits on c:\ drive. - If we add another 4TB of storage as a separate RAID array, it will 'present' on this physical server as (lets say) D:\ drive - and Dropbox cant 'use it'.

Being RAID 10 - I haven't found a definitive HP/Forum article that says we can 'Expand' the RAID10 Array using more disks. There's mention of 'if you have a battery backed cache, you 'should' be able to. People suggest that we 'take a backup', blow away the Array, add the disks, and create a larger array, then restore the backup onto this new, larger array.

This is problematic, as the customer works at least 6 days a week, and a backup/rebuild/restore of 3Tb of data literally takes days (Especially including the re-sync of the Dropbox.... :( ....)

We haven't done a lot of MS Hyper-V work, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this, perhaps using a VM setup. We're willing to buy some more disks (SSD's?), grab a copy of Windows 2016 if necessary, etc. etc. - But I feel there's got to be a better way than 'backup, rebuild and restore to a new, bigger array' every year or two.

Best Option?

Everywhere we read that the best Hardware RAID to use is RAID10 - but if you need to Expand the partition as your data grows, it doesn;t seem like RAID 10 is the best option for us. Could the answer be simply that we change to a RAID 6 setup, cop a performance hit (Which SSD's would hopefully overcome anyway), and then 'add disks' each year as the darn thing endlessly fills up. If RAID 6 is the answer - do we even need to bother with Hyper-V - the old KISS principle has always worked in our favour.

Your thoughts and ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Hyper-V Clients and Windows 10 Update 1903

I have several Hyper-V Clients that are setup with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit OS. Just recently all of my Clients were required to force install the Update. Out of the 30 or so Clients, about 10% are having an issue with the Mouse cursor disappearing intermittently. The cursor disappears in Word, Excel, Google...almost anywhere that Text would be typed in.I have gone thru on the Clients that are being reported, and forced to remove the update. Not the solution I want.

Has anybody had this experience? I have the 1903 update installed and several of the PC's here at work and none are giving me the same disappearing cursor issue like the Thin Clients. Please let me know if there is a fix out there in Forum Land.

Thank You,

Duggan

VHD Sets or Fibre Channel for SQL Virtual Machines

Hello Experts,

I am creating clustered hyper-v 2016 to create production virtual environment include SQL Cluster 2016 With SAN Storage connected to the hosts through fibre.

I created CSV Volume and hosted all virtual machines vhdx into it however now i would like to create storage for the SQL Virtual Machines and i can do this with

Option 1: Create new CSV Volume and create VHDS shared between the two virtual sql servers

OR

Option 2: Use the Fibre Channel to connect the storage direct to the virtual machines using MPIO.

My Question in term of performance and IOPS which method is better ?

Windows Boot Manager appears when restarting VM with Windows Server 2019 Guest OS

$

Hi,

I've seen this problem for a while now - First in existing deployments (which made me think it's an issue with the infrastructure), but now on new Hyper-V deployments as well:

When I try to restart a VM by actually pressing the restart button in the Windows Server 2019 Guest OS, the VM appears to boot into the Windows Boot Manager from time to time:

There is absolutely no issue with the attached VHDX-Files, the problem can occur on the simplest deployments with one local disc. And if I select the "windows server"-entry, everything is booting like a charm.

My problem right now is, that this boot manager does not have a countdown. That's a real problem for our staff, which has no access to the Hyper-V Console, but is able to restart a VM by accessing it via RDP.

My question is now: Am I the only one out here with that problem? I did some research, but I either used the wrong search phrases or I am missing something big here.

Thanks in advance for your time and effort - and sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.

Windows 10 Enterprise virutal machines frequent disconnects due to RemoteFX on Hyper V

$

Hello,

We run Windows server 2016 on our host machines, and we connect to our hosts through an remote desktop gateway, we have run into an issue where users who remote in through the gateway are getting disconnected for about 5-10 seconds and then their session is restored. This happens about once every 30-60 minutes.

Event viewer is throwing the following errors

Disconnect trace:CUMRDPConnection Disconnect trace:'calling spGfxPlugin->PreDisconnect()' in CUMRDPConnection::PreDisconnect at 4726 err=[0xc], Error code:0xC

'Failed GetConnectionProperty' in CUMRDPConnection::QueryProperty at 3015 err=[0x80004001]

I get flooded with these events about 100 times a minute, (not each event, just a collection of related events in one minute).

I'm looking for a way to disable remotefx so the host will not allow the client computers to use remotefx anymore. I tried a few things such as

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations
DWORD: fEnableRemoteFXAdvancedRemoteApp: 0x00000001 (0) - On remote gateway server

The DWORD above is not on any of my host machines, I was concidering adding it and setting the value to zero, but I'm not sure if this will do the job.

I also tried to disable this in group policy,by disabling everything remoteFX related other than the remotefx entry related to compression algorithms.

Has anyone delt with this before? I would greatly appreciate any guidance.

2016 Hyper-V Server Network Down Until Disable & Re-Enable Virtual network Adapter MGT

We have a new, vanilla 2016 server running hyper-v.  It is patched current to: July 9, 2019—KB4507460 (OS Build 14393.3085)

On boot up post adding the virtual switch to the Hyper-V server the network comes up with the yellow triangle. If we connect via the iDRAC and disable the Virtual Network Adapter - MGT and then re-enable the network starts working again, until the next reboot.

Any ideas?

Hyperv replication warning even though everything is working

$

Hi, I have 2 Windows 2016 hyper-v servers. First is master, second is only to receive replications, pretty basic. I have 9 VMs. If I look at the replication integrity, they are all working fine. Last successfull replication is always just a couple of minutes old (replicating every 15 minutes).

But for some, I have a warning which is;

Time duration since the last successful application consistent checkpoint has exceeded the warning limit

Even if I reset the stats, the warning stays. You can see the problem discussed here; https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsServer/comments/885272/time_duration_since_the_last_successful/

How can I get rid of that warning? They are all 100% successfull replication.

Thanks
