Hyper-V 2016 QoS/Load Balancing

$

I have a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Hyper-V Cluster with 4 nodes and 181 VMs running on it.  With the newest node that I just added yesterday, I have switched to a converged networking model utilizing 2 - 10Gb NICs for all Ethernet traffic.  Storage traffic is done over Fibre Channel.  I created a Team of the 2 - 10Gb NICs using the Teaming mode: Switch Independent, Load balancing mode: Dynamic, and Standby adapter: None (all adapters Active).  I then created a virtual switch in Hyper-V and created virtual NICs via PowerShell for Management, Cluster, and Live Migration.

Everything is setup and working so I decided to do some testing with Live Migration to see how fast it would go and how much network bandwidth would be used during the Live Migrations.  I setup a performance monitor to monitor the Live Migration vNIC to see what the peak bandwidth utilization would be.  When Live Migrating multiple VMs with a large amount of RAM assigned to them, I hit 14Gb of utilization at one point which tells me that Load Balancing in the team is working.  Since I now have all my Ethernet traffic flowing over the same NIC team and knowing that the Cluster vNIC is extremely latency sensitive in regards to maintaining consistent heartbeats between nodes, I want to guarantee that the Cluster vNIC will always have the necessary bandwidth to maintain communication between nodes.

I found Microsoft Documentation here about network QoS in Server 2012 but nothing for network QoS in Server 2016 or 2019.  QoS Overview in 2012  Is this no longer recommended in Server 2016?  What is the correct/best practice method for setting up networking in general for Hyper-V Clusters in Server 2016?

Hyper-V showing 15350 and 20144 error trying to launch a VM

Hello,

As i'm trying to enable Nested Virtualization within Window Server 2016, i have been having the below error's lately. I checked the setting/Configuration and everything seems to be mounted correctly. To kick the configurations for the VM, i Have enabled Mac Address Spoofing ON, Dynamic memory enabled and have set -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true.

From the Event Viewer i have below message:

  • The virtualization infrastructure driver (VID) is not running. (Event ID : 15350)
  • The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'QNX' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Event Id : 20144)

I'm currently having a Virtual Server hosted by VMware trying to enable Nested Virtualization for the same.

Thanks for the Help!

PS C:\windows\system32> Get-VMProcessor -VMName QNX | FL ExposeVirtualizationExtensions

Disk 2 has the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system. Go to Microsoft's support website (http://support.microsoft.com) and search for KB2983588 to resolve the issue.

I keep seeing this error in my event logs of the VM's .

How do i fix this?

I have 2 Hyper-V hosts and they both have MPIO installed.

Hyper-V guest Windows SP Professional SP3 seems to have no internet access

In spite of reading many articles and watching dozens of videos, I am still running into a strange phenomenon.

The other day I installed (from my host Windows 10 Pro) all Hyper-V features. After creating a virtual machine, I also installed Windows XP Professional SP3 as the OS for this virtual machine. According to the suggestions found all over the internet:

- I created an external virtual switch, pointing to the very same network adapter that is used by Windows 10 Pro to gain access to the internet. Because I have several adapters in my computer, most of them having the status 'unplugged', I double checked this by enabling/disabling this adapter and had a look at the overall result. So, I am 100% sure the right network adapter is in scope.
As part of the Virtual Switch Properties, the option "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" is also checked.

- In the settings for the virtual machine (XP), a Legacy Network Adapter was added with a Virtual switch pointing to the same virtual switch as mentioned above.

- In the active network overview of the host machine (Windows 10), a connection of access type "Internet" is visible. The name of the external virtual switch is between the parentheses.

But, when starting the XP virtual machine, there seems to be no access to the internet at all. From an earlier test, I can remember that all of a sudden, after shutting down the virtual machine, 127 Windows XP updates had been processed one by one. Isn't that a bit weird assuming there is no internet access at all? Where are these updates coming from?
I tested the XP internet connection using version 6 of IE. In the XP network connections a single Local Area Connection is visible. In its properties, it can be seen that the IP address will be obtained automatically (is this really the intention?).

So far, I still do not know how to solve this and if it's a Hyper-V issue or something in the XP settings has to be changed (although no video and/or article I read addressed this issue).

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Copying files between Hyper-V host/guest issues

$

I do know there are several ways to copy files between a Hyper-V host and its guest. So far, the most straightforward method to me seemed to be the setup of an internal network combined with the network drive mapping feature of the Windows Explorer.

GOAL: being able to copy files from a Hyper-V guest to host (or the other way round).

SETUP: Windows 10 Pro (host), Hyper-V version 10.x, Windows XP SP3 (guest).

On the host side I added a virtual switch (type: internal) and assigned it a static ip-adres (192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0). In the settings of the Hyper-V guest a legacy network adapter was added referencing the newly added switch on the host side. After starting the Hyper-V guest (XP), the new Local Area Connection was also assigned a static ip-adres (192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0).

In the guest (XP) I tried to map a network folder to the host by using the usual syntax based on both hostname and sharename, resulting in an error message that shows that no such share can be found. On the host side (Windows 10) a share had been added with permissions granted for Everyone. In the host itself, it opens the shared folder when entered in a Windows Explorer as the target.

The weird thing is that from the guest the host can be pinged by using its ip-adres (192.168.1.1). But from the host the guest cannot be pinged (ping 192.168.1.2): a timeout is shown after a few seconds. I do know being able to ping is not always that important, but could this be some kind of a clue?

What did I overlook?

Any help is appreciated.

Hardware requirements for SQL on Hyper-V 2019

$

Hi,

we need to size/buy the hardware for a Hyper-V Server that fit best for the use with a MSSQL2017/2019 Server. The thing is, we get very different information from our partners about the configuration of the harddiscs. The Server has to use local drives, so we decided to use ssd.

The problem we got stuck on is how to configure them. From the SQL-Servers point of view you would use dedicated RAID-5 for the database-files and dedicated RAID-1 for logfiles and tempdb. But how about the hyper-v point of view ?

Shall we use the dedicated RAID´s and apply them to the SQL-Server as dedicated drives (as physikal or virtual ?), or shall we build a RAID10 and let all the SQL-DB`s and virtual machines run on this one global drive ?

Any suggestions are welcome

Kind regards

Help!!

For the past month I have been trying to fix an issue that I have been having with my Hyper-V role management tools.

When I attempt to open any of my virtual machines under Failover Cluster Management the error message that I am getting is :

“The Hyper-V role management tools are not installed, you can install by opening Server Manager and installing either the Hyper-V role, or expanding the “Remote Server Administration Tools” feature and installing “Hyper-V management tools in failover cluster manager”

Note: The tools and features are already installed as well as the failover clustering and Remote Server Administrator.

Any help would be amazing!! Thank you

Upgraded host server from 2012 R2 to 2016. Hyper-V gues hangs on the black Hyper-V screen

I have several virtual machines that were running fine on my Windows server 2012 R2 host. The host is now running Windows Server 2016. When I attempt to boot the virtual servers they hang on the black Hyper-V screen and I do not have the circle of dots at the bottom... It just hangs there.

If I move them to a Server 2012 host, they boot fine.

Any idea what I can do to get them to boot up on the 2016 host?

Virtual machine located on a removable drive

I have a virtual machine located on a removable drive. This drive sleeps when not in use for an extended period of time. If Hyper-V Manager is started when the drive is asleep, Manager reports that the virtual machine state is "Off-critical". OK, but when the drive spins up a couple of seconds later, it takes up to two minutes for Manager to figure it out and update the VM status to "Off". Is there a way to speed up the polling cycle to minimize the time it takes for Manager to recognize the updated state of the drive?

AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272, 2100 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s) - Are they Hyper-V Nested Capable

I currently have a half dozen AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272, 2100 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s) that I would like to use in my Hyper-V nested visualization plans. Can someone tell me if the CPU's are supported or not. I thought they were but I keep getting the same error that the CPU hardware is not supported for nested visualization.

Can someone give me an answer on this?

Our server crashed and the backup became corrupted

We have recovered the server and have been able to merge the VHDX.

We are now getting the following error when we run a backup and have found that this AVHDX file is no long available on the server and we asre not able to recover it from a backup.

How do we remove this from the snapshot so it stops the error messages we are getting and the backup failing with warnings.

'Server' is missing a checkpoint. The disk paths missing used to be located at: C:\Virtual Drives\Server_9297A4CD-C97C-47C9-95EE-5BAE006D34A7.avhdx. The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002) (Virtual Machine ID 77AEAA27-A845-4981-A0B5-D98F842DDEE5.)

Any help would be good

Page file confusion

Page file confusion

I’m planning to create couple of virtual machines based on Windows Server 2019 (host Windows Serer 2012 R2). One of main will be MS SQL with 128GB RAM – it will be replicated to second site using Hyper-V Replica.

For few hours I’m trying to find advise how to correctly configure page file on the VM (host is clear – just leave it as automatic), and found many contradicting answers. Perhaps somebody can advise something. I found following:

  1. Disable completely page file as you have enough RAM and you don’t need it
  2. Set page file as 1.5xRAM, even if it is huge
  3. Set page file as 1.5x(Total machine RAM – RAM allocated for SQL)
  4. Set page file as automatic
  5. Place page file on OS drive as it won’t be used to much so it can be replicated without any issues.
  6. Place page file on dedicated drive to make sure it won’t se much bandwidth during replication.

All arguments which I read about above are reasonable but I have no idea what really should I chose.

Server 2016 Hyper-V Replica - Planned failover keeps trying to use short domain

$

I have two Windows Server 2016 machines running Hyper-V.  I've successfully configured Hyper-V replica but I have a problem during planned failover.  When I initiate the planned failover and check "Reverse the replication direction" box, it fails to reverse the replication direction, giving the 29262 error.  Instead of using the FQDN specified in the replica configuration, it uses the format hostname.shortdomain as the server name (the "Pre-2000" domain name).  When I manually reverse the direction and change the replica hostname to the FQDN, it works.

I believe this may have started when I migrated my Active Directory server from 2012R2 to 2016 and decommissioned my WINS server.  My current domain functional level is 2008R2, although I don't know why that would matter.

It seems to me that Hyper-V should be using the FQDN and not the short domain format when reversing direction, but I don't know how to make it do that.  Any help would be appreciated!
