When i delete a checkpoint, virtual server crashed and also the host crashed

Hello

I have a server 2012 R2 host with hyper-v.

In the hyper-v i have 1 virtual machine that is 1.6 TB in a SSD disk of 2TB (1.81 TB) which left me with 168GB available.

i did checkpoint to the virtual machine, and the checkpoint growth a lot. So from 168 GB free space, it turned to 40 GB free space. i then  , wanted to remove the checkpoint. and the minute i deleted the checkpoint, the virtual server crashed and so the host was also crashed. when the host turn on and start up, i got blue screens and crashed again. then i got heart attack, cause its a production server... after i myself recoverd , i try to start up with Last Known good configuration, and somehow a miracale happend and the server turn on and startup correctly. now again i have 168 GB free space. and no checkpoints of course.

After a few days, i tried to install backup software, which did somekind of snapshot before the backup started, and the server crashed again with blue screens. again i started the server with Last known good configuration and now it's fine.

My question is why the checkpoint get the server crashed ? is it because of low disk space ? maybe hard disk fault ?

I also can tell that in the event viewer i see sometimes (every couple of days) some disk warning - The IO operation at logical block address 0x1b241d60 for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP0T0L0-0) was retried.

 Please assist.

New host lost internet access - VM on host do have access.

Hi

Starting up with Hyper-V I made a image of my server.

I then activated Hyper-V on the server.
(The server had 2 external IP adresses).

I then removed one of these IPs from the host NIC.
I started up the VM and gave it the removed IP.

Now the VM does respond to the IP and works as expected. It can be reached from outside.
I can also ping the host IP from outside, but the host does not have Internet access.

ipconfig /all show the external IP as (Duplicate) and 169.254.190.177 as (Perferred) on the same Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter NIC. In the NIC settin for IP4 I only see the external IP.

How do I get the host to respond on the external IP?

Extremely high IO usage on replication

Hello,

we have a Dell R730XD server that until last weekend run with Windows Server 2012. That server has dual Xeon CPUs and 256 GB RAM, RAID 10 of SAS disks and another one of SSD disks.

This server has 35 VMs and it did not show any performance issues. 11 of those VMs have replication enabled, and that also worked fine.

Now we have this server running Windows Server 2016, it has all updates and drivers installed, and without any other change the same VMs on the same hardware cant have replication enabled because the IO usage is extremely high. The IO its higher before the replication actually begins, when its creating a Reference Point.

The IO usage gets so high that event the SSD RAID 10 gets killed by it. This behaivior cant the normal, those same machines had replication without any issues with Windows 2012. I searched on the forum and uninstalled Windows Defender, some said that it can cause this kind of issued, but there was no luck.

Does anyone experience this issue? Any ideas are welcome!

Best regards,

Juan.

Why is my vhdx taking up so much space?

I have built a CentOs 7 guest VM in Hyper-V as Gen1 with two drives, both dynamically expanding <g class="gr_ gr_84 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling" data-gr-id="84" id="84">vhdx</g> drives.

I have loaded about 170 GB of data into one of the drives, but on disk on the host, it is taking up 410 GB. What is going on?

This is in the guest:

/dev/sdb1                      504G  168G  311G  36% /var/lib/data

Dear all,

I'm running VMs on my Hyper-V 2016 server connected via iSCSI to a Huawei Storage. The problem is that all the times I find the servers (VMs) in StateSaved-Critical. It says that cannot to virtual machine configuration stoarge.

Can someone help me understand what's wrong?

1. I do can read and write to the volume on the storage,

2. previously, there ware a 2-NODEs FailOver Cluster installation on the servers and then rolled back.

Now I facing this errors all the time,

Here are some eventview logs for more details:

Server 2016 nested virtualization second level OS limitation?

$

Setup would be this:

Level 0: Hypervisor.

Level 1: Host Server 2016 named "Host", and the first guest with Server 2016 named "Guest-Level-1" and "Set-VMProcessor -VMName Name-ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true" activated for this level 1 guest.

Level 2: No which OS are supported as Level-2 virtual machines within "Guest-Level-1"? Is this limited to Server 2016 or Windows 10 (at least 1607) as well?

Aside from supported: Any experience whether those Level 2 guests can be Server 2012 (R2) or Windows 8 (.1) or even Windows 7?

Hi,
I did setup a new VM for SQL.  Software vendor installed SQL2017 on it and their application. Clients are complaining about performance and speed of the application.
Is there a way i can approve the performance of the virtual machine or with other words the performance of the application.  by adding more VCPU ? more Memory ? other settings ??
Any help would be welcome.

This is the Host i use :
HP DL380 G10 - 2 processors XeonSilver 4110 -  RAM 144Gb -  SAS disks 10K
RAID5 -> Host
RAID6 -> VM's

These are the VM settings for the (VM) SQL-server
1 Virtual CPU
32Gb RAM (not dynamic)
Disksize is 1Tb

Hyper-V in Workgroup - how to store VMs on network share?

Hello Gurus

I have 2 workstations both are in different workgroups...not DOMAIN.  Long story but this is how it has to be.

I have Hyper-V running on 1 workstation - but I want to store the VM's on the other workstation... When I create the share and add everyone full control, it still does not work.. I know documentation says to add the computer object full permission but cannot do that in workgroup...

Can't use USB

Any creative workarounds for this?

VMs do not failback after Cluster Aware Updating was performed

Hi guys,

Recently it was noticed that after each of two-node failover cluster (based on Windows Server 2012 R2) was updated VMs didn't failback to their preferred node.

Question: is it behaviour of a failover cluster by design or it means that something doesn't work on a failover cluster in terms of failback feature?

HyperV 2012 Pfsense vlan support?

$

Hi guys.

I have a issue with a hyperV 2012 and pfsense 2.3.x which is working without issues.

Pfsense get 2 interfaces hn0(LAN), hn1(wan).

Now, we got a cisco switch core which manage all the vlans, we got routes inside pfsense and the lan gw is the switch core ip, if pfsense need to contact other vlan is use the switch core for that.

Now, I add a new vlan inside switch core and inside pfsense, we setup all, pfsense port is trunk, we add a client in a port mode access but I can see that pfsense driver hn0 won't support vlans, right?

What options we have to make our pfsense talk to a vlan?

Thanks all for your help.

Should I enable firewall in Hyper-v Hosts ?

After short time - VM was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault.

Hello,

I had 3-node Hyper-V Cluster on Windows 2016 DTC. I decided to upgrade this cluster to Windows 2019 DTC version. I evicted first node from cluster, reinstalled to W2019 and added back to cluster. I tried live migration of some VM to this new node and everything was ok. Then I reinstalled second node (same procedure), then I want to reinstall third node, I migrated VM from third 2016 node to the new nodes and I see that two VM are periodically unexpectly restarting and there is error in Hyper-V event log:

Hyper-V-Worker - EventID: 18560

'VMNAME' was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault. If the problem persists, contact Product Support. (Virtual machine ID B2464510-3CCD-4A42-9776-2A61A3A5F40B)

Both virtual machines are Windows 2016 STD with latest updates. When I move this VMs to old Windows 2016 node, everything is working ok. When I move it back to new 2019 node, in a few minutes are restarting (VM starts, few minutes is working ok, then restart, start, few minutes ok, .............).

I found some bug solution for 18560 error - http://www.checkyourlogs.net/?p=59953 - but it's not my case because my VMs are booting ok.

Draining the last 2012r2 node in a 3 node cluster when migrating to 2016 took the entire cluster offline due to disks going offline - any ideas?

$

I have a 3 node HP cluster with each node directly attached to a JBOD device. Each node shows 4 CSV's that are all healthy.

I upgraded 2 of them from 2012R2 by draining node, reinstalling 2016 and then adding them back to the cluster and everything worked fine.

Started the same process off today and all the disks went offline along with all the machines in the cluster apart from 2 still on the original host that failed to migrate.

Got everything back by unpausing and fail back of the machines and restarting all the failed migrations.

Needless to say, that was not my favourite part of the day.

Event details for the drives show events such as

=======================

The pools are owned by this last node.

After bringing the last node online, I saw that all the CSV's showed an operation status  of regenerating for a while before going back to healthy.

Anyone seen this behaviour before and have some pointers of anything that I might have missed in the process?
