"Cluster Rolling Upgrade" 2012R2 to 2016 ON NEW HOSTS?

$

Can the CRU process also be used if instead of reloading existing hosts, a new host with new hardware is instead used?

In the past there was always that CPU compatibility setting that needed to be checked for live migrations, but has that requirement changed now for mixed mode clusters?

What is the principle (process) of Hyper-V merge snapshot (differential disk)?

As the title, Hyper-V is creating multiple checkpoints (such as T1, T2 and T3). When I delete the T2 checkpoint, how is the difference disc (avhdx) generated at T2 merged? Even delete all checkpoints? How is it merged? In the process of merging, how do Hyper-V, VSS, etc. work?

Blank screen when I log into my Windows Nano Server

Hello All,

I'm a beginner to Microsoft Windows. Lately I have trying to run a Windows Nano server on Hyper-V. However, Everytime I boot up the VM, it shows black screen. Below are the steps that I performed to create the virtual machine for Windows Nano server.

1. Created a Windows Nano server disk using below command.

PS C:\Users\Administrator> Import-Module D:\NanoServer\NanoServerImageGenerator\NanoServerImageGenerator.psm1
PS C:\Users\Administrator> New-NanoServerImage -DeploymentType Guest -Edition Standard -MediaPath <DVD ISO> -TargetPath
C:\NANO01.vhdx -ComputerName <Computername> -DomainName <domain.com> -Package Microsoft-NanoServer-IIS-Package

2. Copied the vhdx file to my physical machine.

3.  Created a new VM using the vhdx from above step in Hyper-V.

This lab has a Domain Controller with DHCP role installed. All the VM's in the lab are in same network with same Virtual Network ID.

Can anyone suggest a solution here?

Windows Editions Suitable for Production Environment (Hyper-V)

I am a part of a startup and we are working on a project using Visual Studio Team Services. Our build server (for CI/CD) is going to be a Windows machine. I also want to use Hyper-V for a few Ubuntu VMs. The VMs will primarily be used as our Staging and BETA-Production environments. In the future, when we need a better production environment, we might rent out Linux VMs to some people we know.

I know Windows 10 Pro and Windows Server include Hyper-V (Windows Server Essentials doesn't), but what types of use are allowed for Hyper-V on Windows 10 Pro versus Hyper-V on Windows Server? Can we run a public web-server on a VM hosted on a Windows 10 Pro machine? Can we rent out Linux VMs on Hyper-V on Windows 10 Pro? What kind of licensing would that require?

We are running a Dell PowerEdge R710 as our primary server. Obviously Windows Server would be the best option, but we can't afford to buy the full retail Windows Server 2016 Standard edition. We also don't need all of the features that it includes.

Thanks for your input.

It was suggested I post here instead.

Dynamic Disk

Has Microsoft published any recent best practices around using Dynamic Disks in Windows 2016 DC Edition w/Hyper-V cluster?

I've ready tons of conflicting articles about using them in just LAB,DEV,TEST, but never Prod. Some say Prod is ok after 2012. I found one that says don't use Dynamic Disk in a cluster. Some say always use Dynamic unless the vendor recommends fixed. On and on and on...

I just can't find an "official" article from Microsoft that I can use to present to some colleagues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

created a hyper-v then imported a VMDX provided by the vendor

Created a hyper-v then imported a VMDX provided by the vendor.  When this VM is started up, the NIC was configured. The vendor application installed as well.

The vendor provided a VMDX which goes online as a linux machine.  It starts up then we add a IP in the same subnet as the hyper-v host.   The IP added was pinged and nslookup to confirm no other devices are using this IP.  We added valid DNS servers.  The vmdx was imported as a COPY (create new ID for virtual machine).   Virtual switch is set as External and no other options are chosen.

The hyperv host can ping other network servers however this linux VM cannot ping or nslookup anything.  This Linux VM cannot even ping the default gateway.

This hyper-v host is in Azure and we have confirmed the network security group (NSG) is configured identical to other working NSGs.

Please recommend how to get this server to communicate.  Is there something wrong with the virtual network switch??

Intel turbo boost on VM?

$

Hi all,

Currently we are testing regarding CPU performance on a VM vs. physical host. We've noticed that on a VM our software used for testing is 10% slower then on a physical host. Then we noticed that on a VM the core frequency is set at the base frequency of our Intel processors (in task manager, but also in other tools for checking CPU frequency). On the physical host the frequency is higher because of the Intel turbo boost being applied.

We've also tested disabling the turbo boost on the physical host. Then the difference in CPU performance between the VM and the physical host is only 3%.

Is it as designed that intel turbo boost isn't working on a VM? Or how can we pass the intel turbo boost onto the VM so that it is also being applied there?

Kind Regards,
Joël

Hyper 2012 R2 - Adding a new hdd - Formating the hdd in Windows takes eternity

Hi folks!

I've just added a 40 GB second hdd to a test system via Hyper-V. Now i wanted to format the disk (giving also a new letter) in diskmgmt.msc . Curiously it lasted 3 hours to format this small disk. I'm quite new to hyper-v but still...VMware vSphere takes 3 seconds to do so in virtual machines. What is different in this case or am i doing something wrong? Please help.

IP address keeps changing on VMs

I am running Hyper-V on my Windows 10 laptop. I have a virtual switch set to External and connected to my wireless network adapter. I have 2 VMs using on that virtual switch.

The VMs are set to get their IP address from a DHPC server; my router. Recently, during the day, the VMs will get new IP addresses. This didn't used to happen...but now id does, frequently.

Is this normal behavior?

I am completely unable to access any VM hosted on my WIN2016 server after the update to windows 10 1803. Before it was working normally. I get no error message at all, just when I click connect, or double click, nothing happens. Tried also on a second client of the same domain, same result

EDIT: it looks like I CAN access, but it take like 30 minutes to connect to a VM....

The interesting thing is that Default Switch appears to be forced installed now that generates an IP address and subnet that is completely different from the host network.

I am not sure if that is by design but it would be nice to have a clean Event Log that doesn't involve me turning off these IDs. :P

Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Hyper-V manager - cannot connect to new created VMs

$

I'm new to hyper-v and virtualization platform on windows.

I just follow the instructions and created a local virtual machine on my laptop.

I started it and the tried to connect, but no luck. I just get the error: "Cannot connect to the virtual machine. Try to connect again. If the problem persists contact your system administrator"

I can see hyper-v enabled in windows features and the services are running.

The hyper-v manager shows my VM is running but still cannot connect.

Looking on another forum https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/2f6c2d14-7e5f-4764-8569-850d9a4739ad/windows-10-hyperv-cannot-connect-to-the-virtual-machine?forum=win10itprovirt , i can see several people complaining about this issue but no answer in 3 years :(. Just a reference to a doc which doesn't exist.

I'm using win10  enterprise ver 1709 (OS Build 16299.551)

My laptop is part of a domain and the domain user i'm using is part of the Hyper-V administrators group.

Any help?

Questions for Virtual Machine's Graphic card

Hi, there

I want to use Windows 7 Virtual machine on Windows 10 Hyper-V.

In this case, can Win7VM  use Win10's Graphic Card?

If yes, do I need to configure some settings in VM or host machine?

Hyper-V shared nothing live migration

$

Hi guys,

just want to ask something, since i am spending already too much time on troubleshooting it myself.

so i have 2 storage space clusters., both runninn smoothly. (all vms running on CSV) I now just want to migrate some vm's from 1 cluster to the other with shared nothing live migration.  I knew there are some requirements, wich i think i all fulfilled...

tried it manually in hyper-V, and with VMM, both giving same error.

Migration did not succeed. Failed to copy file 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\AMDV-AX365-036\FinandOps8.0withPlatUpdate15.vhd' to '\\AMD-HC02\AMD-HC10.2149894307$\{53a6648f-c7c3-4ee0-825c-37411031c1c1}\AMDV-AX365-036-1\FinandOps8.0withPlatUpdate15.vhd': 'The specified network name is no longer available.'('0x80070040').
Unknown error (0x8000)

- I configured in AD the kerberos delegation. all nodes have access to eachother (i have no credential error, so all good here)

- In Hyper-V settings, incoming and outgoing live migration enabled, use all available live migration networks enabled

- enabled live migration with different cpus...

-disabled firewalls for testing..

When i start the migration, all steps are green, only the copy ....  I even see in the volume that the folders are being created..

When i powershell on target machine, get-smbshare, i see the smbshare is created , but its gone after few seconds...

I think i am close, but somewhere something is screwing me

any help would be appreciated

Host network performance worse than on VMs

$

Hi :)

I have a Windows 10 HyperV with an internal interface as main Nic (default GW), in same subnet of my VMs.

When transferring Windows files or Veem backup through a Wifi/LanRouter that goes through a Pfsense router in the HyperV the speed is less than half for the HyperV Host (starting at 50MB/s and stabilizing at around 25 after a while), butnormal to a VM in the same subnet (around and above 100MB/s == Gigabit).

Because my main storage is on the hvHost I would like to have full speed.

I have changed cable and Nic already.

Removed all traffic shaping on the Pfsense vm.

Tried to Enable and Disable the VMQ on concerned VMs (it seems not applicable on a Win10 host Bridge).

I think I have isolated the issue is with the HyperV host machine. I am pretty sure it was working at full Gigabit speed before and something happened at some point

It is worth mentioning the same HyperV host has 3 connections in the same Wifi-router subnet, a Wifi one with no def.Gateway, 1 going to a VM, 1 to another VM (both unshared in the management OS).

Hyper-v over smb: strange smb sessions.

$

Hello.
We have a Hyper-V cluster (2016) that works with the SOFS cluster (2016).
Usually, for each vhdx file there are connections on behalf of the Hyper-V host that uses it.
However, sometimes there are sessions on behalf of Hyper-V administrators.

Get-SmbOpenFile | ? Path -match "Server2_1day.vhdx" | select FileId, SessionId, ShareRelativePath, ClientComputerName, ClientUserName | ft

       FileId SessionId ShareRelativePath ClientComputerName ClientUserName
       ------ --------- ----------------- ------------------ --------------
9191767457793 9191364231205 NOTIER\VMDATA\SERVER2\SERVER2_1DAY.VHDX 10.0.10.11 %Domain%\%host%$
9194988110257 9191297122641 notier\VMData\Server2\Server2_1day.vhdx 10.0.10.11 %Domain%\%administrator%
9191766885145 9191364231205 NOTIER\VMDATA\SERVER2\SERVER2_1DAY.VHDX 10.0.10.11 %Domain%\%host%$

If such a session is interrupted, the virtual machine receives a critical error and stops.
We have found that these sessions appear, for example, when the size of vhdx changes on the fly.
If the virtual machine is turned off and on, they disappear.
If the virtual machine is restarted, they remain.

Is it possible to avoid the appearance of such sessions?
Is it possible to avoid the appearance of such sessions when changing the size of the disk without turning on / off?

2012R2 VMs stopped booting under 2016 Hypervisor

$

Hello all,

My environment:

3 physical nodes running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter. Hyper-v failover cluster. Fully updated.

I deployed some virtual machines with Windows Server 2012R2, 2016 and CentOS.

They all start running fine, but after some time all the 2012R2 vms stop booting up. I can only get to the recovery menu.

2016 and CentOS keep working OK.

What I have tried:

  • Reinstalling from scratch. The problem appeared again after a while. At some point they wouldn't start anymore. Windows updates were disabled this time so it wasn't one of them what triggered the error.
  • Creating a new Gen1 VM, attaching the VHDX. No luck.
  • Local VM on one of the nodes, running standalone, out of the failover cluster. Same issue.
  • Boot repairs (checkdisks, sfc, bootrec, bcdedit...). I can't get them to boot anymore.
  • Windows Update fixes (like https://blog.workinghardinit.work/2017/10/11/quick-fix-publish-vm-wont-boot-after-october-2017-updates-for-windows-server-2016-and-windows-10-kb4041691/). It doesn't seem to be a pending update error.
  • I had one testing VM which was off for a while, almost clean. It doesn't boot either.
  • Safe mode, safe mode with cmd, safe mode with networking, disable driver signature, disable early launch malware... boot modes don't work either.

The Host log shows this error for the Hyper-V Worker:

'VM-NAME' has encountered a fatal error.  The guest operating system reported that it failed with the following error codes: ErrorCode0: 0x7B, ErrorCode1: 0x749E6790, ErrorCode2: 0xC0000034, ErrorCode3: 0x0, ErrorCode4: 0x0.  If the problem persists, contact Product Support for the guest operating system.  (Virtual machine ID <VM-ID>)

Anyone having the same problem? Is there any more information that I can provide to help troubleshooting?

Is there any way I can check some internal VM boot log? When I select "enable boot logging" in the VM it doesn't create the log. I believe it doesn't reach that phase.

Thank you very much in advance.
