Hyper-V 2012R2 Replica Brocker Replication to Hyper-V 2016 Fails

Hi Everyone.

Right now, we have a very strange issue, we just install a new Window 2016 Datacenter Physical Server to act as a replica server to receive our production workloads replicas, every works well until we replicate several machines from our Hyper-V Cluster Replica Brocker, the replicas start the initial replica process and when it reaches 98% fails with the following error.

Event ID 33676 on Hyper-V-VMMS

Replication operation for virtual machine '*********' failed: One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual machine ID 1729A75A-B136-45EE-A009-827D46FC2757) (Primary server: 'COBOGWBPSQLBRK.*****.com', Replica server: 'rep04.****.com')

Event ID 32034 in Hyper-V-VMMS

Hyper-V failed to import initial replica for virtual machine '******': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual machine ID 1729A75A-B136-45EE-A009-827D46FC2757)

The replicas that come from stand alone Hyper-V Servers works great and the Replication Health Status is Normal and continusly replicate the changes as in should do.

The issue is only with the virtual machines that are replicated from a Hper-V Cluster using a Hyper-V Replica Brocker

I'll appreciate all the help that you could offer

Can Hyper-V 2012 enable Powershell management of VMs on a 2008 R2 machine?

I have a large number of VMs, all hosted on W2K8 R2 SP1, that I would like to migrate to new W2K12 host machines.  Is it possible to manage the 2008 VMs with the Powershell cmdlets available on the 2012 servers?

Trying to export then import existing VM - "encountered error during import operation"

Hello,

I'm very new to Hyper-V and have had the task of "cloning" an existing VM we have in use.  From the Hyper-V management console, I have successfully (i think) exported the VM that I want to replicate, but then receive the following unhelpful error message when walking through the 'Import Virtual Machine' wizard..

"Hyper-V encountered an error during import operation"

I receive this after walking through the entire wizard, selecting the VM to import (the one I exported), and selecting destinations for the new VM files.

Any help is greatly appreciated as this is a critical business and time sensitive issue for me.

Joining domain inside Hyper-V - Server 2012 R2

Here is the situation:

I have created two virtual machines in Hyper-V. Both are connected to the same Hyper-V virtual switch, both have access to the Internet, both have their own IP adresses in my physical network:

My physical machine has IP 192.168.0.7

Virtual machine A has IP 192.168.0.20

Virtual machine B has IP 192.168.0.21

I can "ping" them any way around - it works.

Both virtual machine are running Windows Server 2012 R2, just installed.

On machine A I want to create a domain and I want machine B to join it. So I added Active Directory Domain Services role to machine A, created a domain called CrmDomain.local. I used all the default settings by the way.

I log in to machine B as Administrator, go to settings, type in CrmDomain to join. A new window pops up for credentials (so I guess it can find the domain), I type in Administrator password, hit Enter... It tries to connect for a couple of seconds, then this pops up:

http://image.prntscr.com/image/5307c865f4be4f5699ffb65c5b63070e.png

I don't know what am I doing wrong. I don't care about security - it's just for testing purposes.

Here is ipconfig/all from domain controller (machine A):

http://image.prntscr.com/image/7bc0eb7869fe4adc9bebe3f95a2cabf0.png

And here is machine B:

http://image.prntscr.com/image/6cfcd27341fc4f669d075c5a8b425cf1.png

I haven't touched any settings, it's my first time with server system :P

If I can give you any more informations, please let me know.

Multiside Hyper-v Cluster: Access to storage of other site

My company has a geocluster/multisite hyper-v cluster. We have 2 close Datacenters/Sites
We have 2 hyper-v hosts on Site1, 2 hyper-v hosts on Site1, quorum in remote office.
We have 1 HP 3PAR on Site1 and 1 HP 3PAR on Site2. We have SAN replication. We use CSV
The design is OK and valid by Microsoft....

My questions are only for learn in depth:

1) Could hosts on site 1 access to storage on Site2 or always access storage on Site1 ??
2) If 2 hosts on site1 are off and storage on Site2 is off, I supppose that any VM can start, not ??

veeam backup vs hyperv suddenly fails (Microsoft Hyperv-V VSS Writer is non-retryable error state)

Hi

2012 r2 hyperv, using veeam backup and replication 9.5 for backups.

Suddenly backup stopped working an the error that throws:

1/15/2017 3:19:47 AM :: Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT'.
The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
--tr:Failed to verify writers state.
--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.

If we run vssadmin list writers on hyperv host we see that Microsoft Hyperv-V VSS Writer is non-retryable error state. If we restart hyperv management service then this error disappears for awhile, until we dont trigger backup again.

we have even rebooted hyperv host but that did not solve it .

Please advise

Hyper-V Core 2016 Kerberos Constained Delegation Failing

$

Hi all,

I am running some tests in a lab environment and have run into an issue that's left me quite confused. I'm running some base VMs in VMware Workstation, two of which are nested virtualization Hyper-V machines installed on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Core. One last machine simple serves as a GUI management node and Veeam host.

A visual representation of my environment:

>Workstation Host (VMware Workstation as hypervisor)
>>LAB-VHOST01
>>>>LAB-DC01
>>>>LAB-ADCS01
>>>>LAB-NANO01
>>LAB-VHOST02
>>LAB-MGMT01

My challenge lies within trying to live migrate a VM from LAB-VHOST01 to LAB-VHOST02 using the management console on LAB-MGMT01 using Kerberos authentication. I've set up the cifs and 'Microsoft Virtual System Moving Service' services on LAB-VHOST01 to delegate to LAB-VHOST02, and vise versa.

However, when I initiate a VM migration with those two services delegated, it fails with a 'no credentials are available in the security package' Kerberos error message, and the event log on LAB-MGMT01 reports an Audit Failure on a null SID.

When I configure either of the VHOSTs to delegate to any service, the live migration is successful. My question then is, what services and/or hosts are actually involved in this process? I've tried delegating every service to the opposite host, but it fails as well. It only succeeds when automated delegation to any service is used. I've had no luck looking online and would appreciate any input.

Nested VM doesn't have network conn. despite of MAC spoofing enabled

Hi all,

i'm trialing Hyper-v 2016, enabled Hyper-v in one of the VMs and also enabled MAC address spoofing on the NIC.

The issue is, even though the Hyper-v VM got MAC spoofing enabled however the nested VM cannot access network.

When I look at the network status of the VM using Hyper-v manager I don't see the MAC address of the nested VM either, seams like the MAC of the nested VM is not learnt

Any suggestions?

Cannot Delete Hyper-V Checkpoint

$

I just finished building 2 new Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Hosts.  Each running 3 VMs (All Server 2012 R2 as well).  I use Veritas Backup Exec.  Started a backup of each and AVHD files were created during the backup that did not merge back into the parent file after the backup ran.  To "fix" this I manually merged the AVHD file into the parent.  I then re-ran the backup and the same thing happened again.  So I merged the files again.

Now I have checkpoint that I can NOT delete in the Hyper-V Manager.  I started researching and tried some commands in Powershell but nothing seems to work.

Please help....

Hyper-V migration not working

$

Hello,

I have two server installations. One is a Windows Server 2012 R2, one a 2016. Both are running Hyper-V.

They are part of a cluster that was created with the 2012 server. Two VMs are running on the 2016er.

I'm now trying to migrate the VMs to the 2012er. Allow live migration is activated on both servers. The VMs are stored on the cluster shared volume, which can be accessed by both servers. I try to migrate only the computer, not the files, as I only want to switch which server is running the VMs.

What I select
Action: "migrate"
Migration type: "migrate virtual computer"
Migrating options: "only migrate virtual computer" (does not change the location for all the elements)

When I try to start the migration, the following error pops up:

"Error while migration procedure on "TEST-VM
The procedure is not supported."

I googled, but I did not find anything. What could be the problem?

Re-calculate memory demand on a vm in Hyper-V

$

Good morning TechNet community

What I'm trying to understand is the Memory Demand calculation when using Dynamic memory in Hyper-V

Found this well detail page - https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/chrisavis/2013/03/06/monitoring-dynamic-memory-in-windows-server-hyper-v-2012/

That said

Memory Demand – Derived from performance counters, this is the amount of memory required at this time to fulfill the requirements of what is going on in the running VM.

My issue is that these performance counters can't be reset or re-calculated to get current status. Just shows a point in time the VM require memory over the allocated Maximum RAM. Right now its only using 50% of allocated memory.

I found that it was rogue task which has been dealt with but the Memory Demand still shows higher than the assigned memory. SCOM monitor picks this up using the MP 'Hyper-v 2012 R2 VM Monitoring' and im looking for a way to reset the Memory Demand counter so that it clears this monitor. The only "fix" I have found is increasing the max memory (which is a waste) or setting the memory to Static.

Any idea's?

Hyper-v live mitration fail when hyper-v replica is enabled in virtual machines

Hi.

INTRODUCTION

We have a cluster (version 2016) in production with the following characteristics.

  • 4 HP Proliant 380 G6 servers with 96 GB RAM each. (With its latest drivers and windows server 2016 datacenter updates).
  • 4 network cards; 2 for iscsi, 1 for livemigration + cluster, and 1 for the production + management network.
  • 5 512GB iscsi disks shared from a QNAP TS-879U-RP (with the latest firnware version).
  • 80 small virtual machines with windows and linux.

By testing, we have verified that Live Migrations work perfectly when virtual machines do not have the Hyper-V Replica option active. Through a powershell script we have been for hours migrating every minute machines from one server to another without any problem.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

We want to have all virtual machines replicated on a server, so we have activated the hyper-v replica option on all virtual machines. Randomly live migrations fail. The virtual machine hangs in stopping state, totally inaccessible. There is no way to recover it except restarting the server, which takes several hours, as some service is blocked, so the server does not restart until after several hours. We tried to unlock the virtual machine by stopping the process linked to the virtual machine, stopping the hyper-v services or the cluster service, without success. As I say, the only way to recover is to restart the server and the cluster automatically move the machine on another host.

As a note of interest, comment that the cluster is upgraded to the 2016 version from a 2012 version. Before updating to Windows Server 2016 we never had these problems before. Live migrations failed sometimes, but never left the physical host "hung".

Greetings and thanks.

Hyper-V not working after installing Remote Server Admin Tools for Windows 10

$

Hi Guys,

After installing the Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) for Windows 10 my Hyper V machine will not start. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue?

In the event viewer the errors are Hyper-V-Worker:

'xxx_machine' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID XX6B9DCA-C50F-43EE-87CE-0EDAF56DAA5C)

And the Hyper-V-VMMS admin log:

'xxx_machine' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID XX6B9DCA-C50F-43EE-87CE-0EDAF56DAA5C)

Uninstalling the RSAT allows it to work again. The version I installed it the 64 bit one:

WSB for VM with pass thru disk

I have a VM exchange 2013 under Failover cluster with pass thru disk . I scheduled a daily backup of this Virtual server by attaching an additional pass thru disk as dedicated backup drive for dail full backup. Before adding this dedciated backup drive to the VM , I have presented it to the failover cluster and then added it to the VM as pass thru disk. However, now I am getting an error in VMM as "unsupported cluster configuration" for this Exchange VM. Though the server is wrkng fine , I believe that ,  when the dedicated pass thru  disk is being used , it will be removed  from the vm  windows explorer hence the cluster settings got screwed up.

Conlcusion:  pls suggest me the best way to use WSB for VM with pass thru disk under failover cluster

iSCI vSwitch setup for Hyper-V VMs

$

Hi All,

We have 3 Hyper-V servers 2 of which are part of a cluster, 2 physical adaptors have been dedicated to iSCSI and LUNs are presented to the hosts for shared storage. Disk failover is controlled by the iSCSI MPIO.

We have a requirement for VM's to have direct iSCSI connection(s) to access the data on the disks, i think this is called a RAW connection (correct me if i'm wrong). To configure this my thoughts were to create two vSwitches and have each vSwitch connect to the physical iSCSI interface (all iSCSI vSwitchs will have the same name across all hosts).

With this is mind it raises questions:

  1. Is the correct way to do this?
  2. How do the VMs deal with disk failover events if the host is controlling the disk pathing via MPIO? My thoughts were to enable the 'NIC Teaming' option by ticking 'Enable this network adaptor to be part of a team in the guest operating system' within 'Advanced Features'. Would this allow the VMs to continue to work gracefully in the event of a  failover when the hosts utilises MPIO for redundancy/load balancing?

I look forward for all of you professional guidance.
