Reboot loop VM Hyper-v!!! urgent help

Hi guys,


I do really need a hand on this one folk. We are a software developer company and we use Virtual machines on Hyper-v manager as templates to build upon. Unfortunately, we got a cloned VM at some point started to come with this issue of a reboot loop. We found a quick fix by using a <g class="gr_ gr_396 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="396" id="396">chkdsk</g> command and starting from the last known good config to be able to run the VM again.

But this has become a <g class="gr_ gr_706 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="706" id="706">chain,</g> since we have copied many VMs from this VM that has the rebooting issue, and consequently all the other now do have, and sometimes the quick fix do not work anymore.

I was wondering what sort of solutions are available out there the solve this issue once for all. Any help would be great.

Windows Server Datacenter as a guest?

Hi,

If the virtualisation host is licensed with a Datacenter license, then it can have an unlimited number of guests running Windows Server, including the Datacenter edition itself.

My question is, is there a benefit in using Windows Server Datacenter as a guest? I'd rather be more conservative and have Standard for guests, but currently there is a mixture of Editions on the estate, and I'd rather streamline to one, whichever it may be, i.e. if Datacenter has its benefits, then let's go for that, otherwise it's Standard.

Hyper-V Host Reachable but some guests are not visible via network

Hey,

we´ve got a Problem with one of our standalone Hyper-V Hosts.
Problem is that the Hyper-V Host is reachable via network but some guests are not.
All Guests are in the same NIC-Team / HV-Switch.

The Issue occurs first at last friday morning. - Strange that the same issue occurs today - also friday.
If i restart the Host - then it´s all working again.

I´ve cannot see any event logs which contain valid information for the reason - just that dns lookups are not working anymore because the Domaincontroller and DNS ist a VM.

Hyper-V Host is Server 2012 R2 with actual patches - VM´s are also all Server 2012 R2 with actual patches.

Any Suggestions?

How to correlate scsi disks between Hyper-V Parent and VMs using virtual fibre channel (vfc)

I have a scenario with 6 Hyper-v VMs (Win2k12R2) and all data disks in VMs are over virtual fibre channel (vfc).

Each VM has 20 disks. 4 paths to each mpio device. (80 scsi devices from parent)

From the parent, I would like to be able decipher which scsi disk goes to which VM

I can run on parent: "devcon.exe find scsi\vmlun"

or

get-ciminstance win32_pnpentity and filter out the hyper-v luns

I get back deviceID or PNPDeviceID, but these do not match what is in the VM. (devcon listclass diskdrive)

I was hoping someone can shed some light on how to get the correlation between the two, so I can see if a scsi device is not making it into the parent.

Hi,

I have server installed in my laptop trying to install os in virtual machine but its giving me error. Please help me out.

I am getting this error

Compatibility Report.

The computer started using windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restsrt the computer so that windows starts normally then insert the installation media and restart the upgrade(Do not select ICustom(Advanced) to perform an upgrade. Icustom (advance) installs a new copy of windows and deletes your programs and settings.

Where to get Windows 2008R2 Standard key as guest VM on 2012 R2 Standard

I purchased a Dell server with Windows 2012 R2 Standard plus add-on license for two extra VMs, so total of four VMs. Three VMs are used & activated with 2012 R2 permanent virtual servers. But now I had to install 2008R2 Standard temporarily as a test platform, and testing took so long that the trial period expired. I guess that means that I need to activate 2008R2 Standard on the VM. That is not a problem from a license standpoint, since we own the extra license; however, how do I get the 2008 R2 Standard key?

Dell provided downgrade keys with the 2012 R2, but only for 2012, Enterprise 2008 R2 (Physical & Virtual)--but no 2008 R2 Standard key for the VM. How/where do I get this, or is there a standard one? I have found posts regarding automatic VM activation; however, these all seem to be related to 2012 R2 DataCenter, not Standard.

virtual machuine cannot ping its Hyper-V host

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster of three nodes, each node is configured with below NICs:

1. Management (remote access only)

2. VMs-Connectivity

2. Heartbeat

3. Live Migration

each VM cannot ping or reach the Hyper-V host in which it is placed while it can ping it or reach it if you live migrate it to another host. VMs connectivity to domain and network is fine. The issue is not related to a certain Hyper-V host or VM, I mean if for instance VM01 is hosted on HV01, it cannot ping it nor reach it but if you move it to HV02 then it can ping HV01 ...How can we troubleshoot this? The option to validate the cluster is not possible as we have 74 VMs running on this cluster and all are production VMs.

Note: We have Vlan tagging configured on the team interface for the management NIC and in each VM vNIC configuration.

Also Windows firewall and network discovery on Hyper-V hosts are off

NIC Order Arrangement

Hello,

I have a lab environment VM running Gen 1 VM running a VyOS Router (Virtual Router). I cannot seem to predict the order the NIC is arranged in my VM.

When the VM was created it only had 1 Virtual NIC, I configured this NIC in VyOS and established connectivity from the other Windows VM that is also attached on the same vSwitch where that NIC is attached.

As I added a new NIC to simulate a secondary LAN, i rebooted the VyOS router. The order in which the NIC was attached on the Virtual Router was moved. I had to delete my last configuration for the NIC and reconfigure the new nic (yes! not the old nic) with the same values i configured on the old NIC.

After the VyOS VM was configured all of its port and confirmed working. I added another Gen 1 VM running VyOS, and this time I added 2 NIC and assigned vSwitch'es to appropriate NIC in the same order they were assigned on the first VyOS Router. I configured the VyOS and now the order in which the NIC was assigned was opposite to the first VyOS I configured.

How is the NIC order in the VM Settings presented to the guest OS in HyperV? or can we force the order of the NIC on how they are presented to the Guest VM. vSphere and VMWare Workstation seems to be able to control how the NIC order can be arranged so there must be a configuration in HyperV for a similar result, i Just cant seem to find it anywhere.

Any ideas?

The Operation Failed with Error 32788

Hello,

I have installed windows server 2012 R2 Stnd Edition & running VM (Windows Server 2012 R2) on Hyper-V.

machine is working fine but i want to attached "Fiber channel Adapter" because i want to attach my EMC SAN AX5 LUNs with VM.

When i add hardware with VM then i am getting error message when switch ON VM  "The Operation Failed with Error 32788 "

I tried a lot but could not get any possitive result. Kindly let me know how to get EMX SAN LUN on Virtual Machine as my VM already working and i want to attach SAN LUNs to VM.

Retrieving VM subnet mask

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to retrieve the subnet mask of a VM running on Hyper-V.

I know there is an easy way to get the IP address (by using Get-VMNetworkAdapter or with KVP), but I found no way to get the mask. Before giving up, I choose to ask if anyone knows a trick to get it.

Unable to remove old checkpoints

I have an old checkpoint on a VM, and when trying to remove it, I receive the following error:

Cannot delete checkpoint: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF).

It looks like the .avhdx file is missing for this as it was from quite a while back.  From my understanding of reading some similar stories and technet articles, I should be able to:

Create a new checkpoint, right click it then select Export.  This would create a new single VHDX file.  Would this eliminate this lingering old checkpoint even though the avhdx file no longer exists?

Hyper V, VMs will not start.

I have 2 Hyper V hosts. Each are in different locations but do take the same GPO. (which no major changes have accored) Both machines have been working just fine for about 2 years. It appears my biggest error codes are 15500 and 15130. Also I have a few VMs still running but if I was to shut them down I cannot get them to start back up.

Event ID or log location for drive events? Adding of and formatting.

Hey guys

I have a tech who's learning to build VMs and he inadvertently closed the console window and started making changes on the VMM server.  All he did was initialize a drive that was sitting on the management server, but I want to find out when the drive was added and the times it has been formatted.  I can't find and event IDs online for disk events, nor can I find anything perusing the most recent entries - spent the most time in System, thought for sure it would be there.

Anyway, it looks like for some reason the drive was just sitting there initialized, but I need to be sure.  If you can point me to where I can find this info either on the server itself, or some report I can generate from vmm that would be awesome.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 VLAN not working as expected.

Hi Guy,

I'm currently installing an Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster with 2 Lenovo x3550M and V3700 storwize.

I'm now on the networking parts.

both server have 4*1Gb NIC Broadcom NetXtrem | 

Two Switch TP-LINK TL-SG1016DE VLAN 802.1q+LAG supported...  

1) I've create a Nic Teaming on the 4*1 Gb Nic Adapter (switch independant) on both server

2) I've create a VM-Switch on this Teaming 

3) I've Create 3 vEthernets :

LiveMigration Vlan 10

Cluster (CSV) Vlan 11

Admin (mgmt) untagged

on both server.

The  physical switch configuration and connection.

on both switch i've first configured the lag (TP-Link called that Trunk, I don't know what exactly type of LAG it is but not LACP) on port 1, 3, 5, 7 and connect this port to the 4 ports of both server. HyperV shows the teaming up. I've also configure this lag with vlanid 1 (PVID), 10,11.

For my test i've also configure the port 15 and 16 of the switch in a lag  in order to configure a "high speed and redundancy" link for the LiveMigration and CSV with pvid1, vlan 10 and vlan11

I've configure ip addresses on vEthernets. try a ping and nothing. no response 

I've read that  Post, but since i'm not a Network Guru i'don't know if it is a misunterstood of how vlan works, an hardware or a software configuration problem

Can you give me an help please ?

NIC interfaces question

Hi,

I recently touched Hyper-V after long non touching...

I have a question about IP addresses of Phisical NICs of the host.

Scenario:

2 active NICs on HOST.

One is with "Allow management OS to share this network Adapter" option checked.

Second with UNCHECKED "Allow management OS to share this network Adapter"

Second is used for VMs only.

The Static IP assigned for the first NIC (with checked Allow...) now "assigned" to vEtherne (Manage).

If I remember correctly the second NIC in my scenario doesn't require static address before assignment of vSwitch Role if

"Allow management OS to share this network Adapter" would be unchecked. Correct?

Missing updates now...

I deployed a HV 2012 R2 server about 6 months ago and it had nearly 200 updates to install (through the whole process). Today I used the same ISO and it installed maybe only 30 - 35 update.

Usually it installs around 30 updates first, then 1 large update followed by around 180 updates. I thought something was wrong, so I did a reinstall, update check, and only 30 or so were installed. Windows Update now says all updates are installed.

Anyone else with a similar issue?

Can't delete some old VHDX files

Howdy,

I had some old VMs that hadn't been used for a while so we wanted to go delete their files to save on space.  The VMs had previously been removed from the cluster and had been powered off for many months.

I went into Hyper-V Manager and deleted the VMs.  I then went to the storage location of the files and tried to delete them but it keeps telling me that the VHDX files are in use by something.

In the past, once I had deleted the actual VM, that freed everything up and I was able to delete the files.  Is there any way to tell why I can't remove these files?
