Hyper-V hosted clients can't authenticate to network

$

I am running Hyper-V on Server 2012R2.  My server has three network connections. One for the Host OS, and two that Hyper-V manages with its virtual switch. All three connections are connected to  an 802.1x protected network. The Host Server OS is configured correctly and is getting IP OK, but none of the client OSes can get an IP address and are unable to authenticate despite being correctly configured in the OS. It seems like the Hyper-V virtual switch is maybe not passing the authentication requests back to the client OS, or the client OSes replies are not being sent to the network through the Hyper_V virtual switch??? At any rate, the virtual clients cannot get IP addresses and we can see the authentication failures along with the virtual MAC addresses in the 802.1x management console.

Does Hyper-V running on Server 2012R2 not support 802.1x?

If Hyper-V doesn't, can someone recommend a competing product that does?  I'm not married to Hyper-V if it is not capable of working in a standard enterprise environment.

What am I missing when migrating to new server?

I have a VM running on a 2008 R2 server.

I shut it down, copy to 2012 Standard and import into Hyper-V. After that, I exported to 2012 R2.

I can then launch the VM and it powers up successfully in 2012 R2.

Hyper-v tells me to upgrade the integration services, and I do.

After the reboot, the server then runs very slow even with 8GB of RAM. CPU usage is pegged at 12% - 15%.

It is a terminal server, and the clients take up to 10 minutes to connect to it and launch the applications.

I cannot figure out why it runs so slow on a faster server with even more RAM and a new server OS.

Is it a compatibility issue between processors?

Any other suggestions?

edit: It appears that TrustedInstaller.exe and svchost.exe are using up most of the CPU usage.

Unexpected shutdown of VMs after Hyper-V host is rebooted

Hi,

we are running Hyper-V 2012 and 2012R2s host with Windows Server 2012 VMs.

VMs are configured to go into saved state.

But after Windows updates (SCCM) and after some scheduled reboots we are experiencing bad issues
within the OS of the VMs one can see "unexpected shutdown" events which causes trouble  with DFS-R for example

So my questions:
1. If we schedule reboots with the  "shutdown" command could it be that some VMs are not completely put into saved state and the hosts reboots anyway?

2. If there is the "/force" Parameter is this a difference?
So does the host behave differently then regarding the VMs?

3. Do DFS-R configurations get into trouble when using "saved state"? So would it be recommended to use "shutdown" instead?

Thanks in advance!!

Kind regards

When you are creating a VM in Powershell and you direct it to install your vhd in a folder, do you have to create that folder first or does it create the folder as part of the process?

FCM Live Migration slow one way

Two node 2012 R2 cluster, running on two identical Dell PE R720.

Live migration from Server B --> Server A happens in a flash 3% --> 52% --> 60% --> done

Live migration from Server A --> Server B takes rather long 3% --> 52% --> than it trickles down by 1% for minutes

Any idea what to try to do with it, so the direction of the Live Migration behaves in same quick way (as it can obviously)

Live migration fails, quick migration succeeds

Hello,

I have a problem with my newly built Hyper-V cluster.
Live Migration fails one way.
I can live migrate from HYPERV1 to HYPERV2, but not the other way.
Quick migration works both ways.

Both servers are up to date Windows 2012R2 Datacenter editions.
I have disabled both the firewalls, error remains.
I get this error when I try to migrate:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine TEST' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'TEST' failed at migration destination 'HyperV2'. (Virtual machine ID A6BDB54B-84AD-4BA7-8927-3E87D5057C43)

User 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' failed to create external configuration store at 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Configuration': The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.. (0x800706FD)

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Can't install hyper-v tools or powershell

I have an issue with a production server running Server 2012 r2 core and the Hyper-V feature with live VMs on it. The Hyper-V GUI mgmt tools and PowerShell modules are not installed and I cannot get them to install. It always fails with error 0x800F0906 suggesting I specify a source even when I use the /source: switch with or without the/LimitAccess switch.

I have tried running the install via DISM or the standard PowerShell Install-WindowsFeature commands.

I have even tried installing the whole GUI of the server but that fails too. Even when I specify a source.Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra,Server-Gui-Shell

I have made sure the server has internet access.

I read that if you are installing from installation media that is the original disk then installed updates it can mean the media is effectively out of date so I have even injected all the applicable updates into a WIM and used that as a source but it still fails.

I looked through the CBS log and found a line saying “Exec: Not able to pre-stage package: package_4854_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14” but I can’t really see why

Could it be due to a corrupt/unreadable package so it fails the install?

2012 R2 - disk performance within VMs

$

Hi.  I'm seeing some weird disk performance issues in a bunch of VMs hosted in a cluster.  Didn't notice this until troubleshooting some general "it's slow" comments from users.

Setup:
2*2012 R2 hosts in a cluster
Each host has dual 10gig NICs used only for iSCSI traffic
iSCSI LUNs live on a 3Par 7200
MPIO
Jumbo frames and flow control on iSCSI network
Cluster comms over teamed 1gbit adapters
Hyper-V and host connectivity via other 1 gbit adapters
VHDX files for the VMs live in separate LUNS, all in CSV
VMs are all 2012 R2 as well

Testing by copying a ~15GB file...

File copies from the hosts' disks to the CSV folders are fast.
E.g. c:\path\file --> c:\clustersharedvolume\someLUN\path\file

File copies from host to VMs' disks are fast
E.g. on vm, \\host\c$\path\file --> c:\path\file

File copies between the CSV folders, done on the hosts, are fast.
E.g. c:\clustersharedvolume\LUN1\path\file --> c:\clustersharedvolume\LUN2\path\file

File copies in the VMs between disks... not so good.
E.g. c:\path\file --> e:\path\file, which would be LUN1\vhdx1 --> LUN2\vhdx2

The in-vm file copies start out fast, run fast for maybe the first quarter of the file, and then speed drops and starts varying wildly.  Once the variability kicks in, the best I'm seeing is up to around 190MByte/sec, with dips as low as 8MByte/sec, or even momentary pauses.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get the VMs to play nicer?

Gen 2 VM status shows locked when first starting

$

Hi, I have a Gen 2 VM on a clustered host that when starting shows a status ofStarting (Locked) for a short time before starting normally.  In the Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering/Diagnostic log there is a 2051 error, but this error is not generated in the event log every time the VM starts with this status.

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering/Diagnostic
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Date:          19/02/2016 7:10:29 AM
Event ID:      2051
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      BRHYPERV04.brn.com.au
Description:
[RCM] rcm::RcmApi::OnlineResource: (5960)' because of 'Resource or one of its providers has been marked as in Locked Mode.'

This error occurs with another Gen 2 VM on a different host in a separate cluster.  It appears to occur whether I configure the VM to boot from the efi file or from the HDD.

I haven't seen this with any of my Gen 1 VM's.  Does anyone know if this is normal behaviour for Gen 2 VM's or if there is some settings I haven't configured correctly?

Hyper-V Settings: VM-Bus Network Adapter versus Network Adapter

$

Hi Everyone,

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with SP1

There is a Hyper-V Virtual Machine running CITRIX netscaler (Linux) that was setup by Citrix external contractors.

I note in the settings for the VM:

1 x VM-Bus network Adapter

1 x Network Adapter

I can only add a "Network Adapter" to a new VM

Where is the setting to add a VM-Bus Network Adapter? Is it any difference to a "Network Adapter"??

We are having performance issues with the Citrix implementation.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V replication fails for VMs on one host in a cluster

$

Hi, We have two sites with hyper-v clusters four nodes in each cluster. Replication has been configured from Site A to Site B. Replica broker is in use. Replication worked for some time, now all VMs on one host in Site A are not replicating. When these VMs migrated to other hosts in the cluster replication is resumed. Migrating already replicating VM from other hosts to this host goes to critical state.

It does not allow to enable any new VM replications as well, fails with kerberos authentication issues. Error 0x00002EFD

One of the host at Site B has the following errors.

Event ID 29212

Hyper-V failed to authenticate the primary server using Kerberos authentication. Error: The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. (0x800703E3)

I have done the tests from below URL NLTEST, setspn, kilst and checked local policy accessing computer over network permissions. All seems to be fine.

Configure server isolation with hyper-v

I have 3 hyper-v servers running on a 2012 R2 host.  Lets call the servers A, B, and C.

I would like A and C to be able to talk to one another and B and C able to talk to one another; but I do not want A and B to be able to talk to one another.

All three virtual servers will only have access to one physical NIC on the host.

What is the best way to achieve this?

cannot connect to multicast NLB from same subnet

$

I've setup lots NLB instances in lab environment. all NLB nodes are VMs which running on WIN2012R2 STD, the HOSTs are running on WIN2012R2 DC. each NLB node has two NICs, they are connected to same VLAN.

NLB mode is multicast, static ARP entry was added on L3 core switch. those NLBs have been working for a long time without any issue.

but Since Jan 2016, these NLB instances has problems almost at the same time. The NLB VIP can be reached from other subnet, but cannot be accessed within same subnet. based on the network capture on NLB node, I can't found response of ARP broadcast.

I try to enable MAC address spoofing, the NLB VIP would get available for client which from same VLAN.

my question is

1. how to resolve this issue without enable MAC spoofing?

2. what's the root Cause?

I hadn't made any changes on switch devices. except monthly windows update on server side.

Unable to open network and sharing center on virtual machine hosted on 2012 r2

Hi guys.

Panic mode...

Two Hyperv 2012 R2 servers.

We did live migrations between those servers and experienced duplicated MAC's.
Now we wanted to solved it by removing nic on every virtual machine, re-adding it and putting static ips on those nic.

We got stucked with the last server where exchange 2013 is hosted.
we have removed the nic, and readded, but now server (virtual machine with exchange2013) does not allows to open network and sharing center.

even if we run this server without NIC attached as a hardware, after the system starts, network and sharing center is not opening.

Creating V-Switch kills Network Connection

$

Dear all,

I hope someone here can help me with this one.

I have an HP c7000 enclosure with BL680c G5 servers onboard.
The BL680c G5 have 4 embedded NICs and an addition NC326m dual port NIC (6 x 1GB in total)
The Enclosure Switches are HP 1/10gb VC-Enet Modules
Opperating system is 2012R2 Hyper-V edition
For the purpose of testing, I’ve disabled the firewall.

When I configure the network part of my serverI use the following script (Which works as expected):

----------------------------------------------
$ipaddr="10.1.9.11"
$SMBNetwork="10.1.100.11"
$gateway="10.1.9.1"
$dns1="10.1.9.5"
$dns2="195.186.1.111"
$teamName1="ManagementTeam"
$teamName2="StorageTeam"
$quadnic=$false
#### team1 ####
$nic1="Ethernet 1"
$nic2="Ethernet 2"
#---- only if quad nic ----
$nic5="Ethernet 5"
$nic6="Ethernet 6"

#### team2 ####
$nic3="Ethernet 3"
$nic4="Ethernet 4"

##### DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING FROM HERE #####
Import-module nettcpip

IF ($quadnic) {New-NetLbfoTeam –Name $teamName1 –TeamMembers $nic1,$nic2,$nic5,$nic6 -TeamingMode SwitchIndependent -confirm:$false}
else {New-NetLbfoTeam –Name $teamName1 –TeamMembers $nic1,$nic2 -TeamingMode SwitchIndependent -confirm:$false}
New-NetLbfoTeam –Name $teamName2 –TeamMembers $nic3,$nic4 -TeamingMode SwitchIndependent -LoadBalancingAlgorithm HyperVPort -confirm:$false

$netadapter = get-netadapter -Name $teamName1
$netadapter | Set-NetIPInterface -DHCP Disabled
$netadapter | New-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv4 -IPAddress $ipaddr -PrefixLength 24 -Type Unicast -DefaultGateway $gateway
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias $teamName1 -ServerAddresses ($dns1,$dns2)

$netadapter = get-netadapter -Name $teamName2
$netadapter | Set-NetIPInterface -DHCP Disabled
$netadapter | New-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv4 -IPAddress $SMBNetwork -PrefixLength 24 -Type Unicast
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias $teamName2 -ResetServerAddress

get-vmnetworkadapter –managementos
----------------------------------------------

After having used this script I have exactly the expected result:

2 teams… 1 composed of 4 NICs and one composed of 2 NICS.
First team has IP 10.1.9.11 while second team has IP 10.1.100.11
Both IPs respond to ping without problem and all administration tasks work well.

BUT… When I try to configure a V-Switch it kills the connection.
Nothing works anymore. No outgoing or incomming pings anymore

The command used to create the V-Switch is:

----------------------------------------------
New-VMSwitch "VMSW01" -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdapterName "ManagementTeam" –AllowManagement 1
----------------------------------------------

I just can’t figure out what’s wrong here… Any help would be appreciated. I’m already fighting with this for 2 weeks now :(

trouble with Windows 2012 R2

I have a Windows 10 host with Hyper-V role installed and 2 vm, one Ubuntu and one Windows 2012 R2.

Ubuntu works very well but Windows 2012 drives me crazy. If I reboot the VM after updates I cannot connect via Hyper-V manager because "ctrl+alt+del" or "crtl+alt+end" doesn't work! Also the RDP refuse to connect me to the vm. Windows 2012 vm is young, with basic installation and updates.

It's really annoying!!!!

Server 2012 VM will not boot

I have a Server 2012 VM that will not boot, it will finally get to the spinning circle and sit there forever.

I can mount the vhdx files, view the files just fine.  I don't now what else it can be.  I've tried disconnecting all other drives (we have another drive connected for user files/shares) and it still does the same thing.  I've removed network controller, tried to boot, same.

I can't help but think it's the main HD.

any help / pointers to repair or resolve is greatly appreciated.  i'm open to any suggestions

Thanks!

Hyper-V vlanid not working in a lbfo

Hello,

I'm working with on a Hyper-V server that has 2x 10 gig nics. I'm trying to set a VMNetworkadapter across a LBFO team. Normally I use VMM to do this and have never had issues. This setupDoes work when I only use a single NIC not teamed.

Here is what I did:

1) Create LBFO called Team. Added NIC1 and NIC2 (Interface Set to Default - No tagging)

2) Created a new vswitch in the Hyper-V console called "vswitch" > External > Mapped to MS multiplexor Driver > Do not allow MGMT to share adapter

3) create adapter in PS: Add-VMNetworkAdapter - name "Management" -ManasgementOS -Switchname vswitch

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "Management" -Access -VlanID 80

4) Add Ip and GW to adapter

-Does Not pass traffic. This setting does work in a single NIC not Teamed Config so I has to be something with the Team?

Any thoughts
