Windows 10 Build 10240 Hyper-V Copy Paste from Host to VM and back

I am using Hyper-V for a training class on a Windows 10 Enterprise 10240 build. In one lab, I have a newtwork share setup to copy items from Host to VM and VM to Host since copy an paste doesn't work. BUT... One student was able to copy and paste from host to VM and VM to host without having to use a network share. Another student with the exact same setup was not. why? Although network sharing works, copy and paste would be much better.

  1. Does Hyper-V in Windows 10 Enterprise support copy and paste?
  2. Is there some trick to enable copy and past besides the VM settings - Enhanced Mode?

Hyper-V NIC Teaming Packet Loss

$

We recently built a new server that runs Hyper-V 2012R2 with 2 VMs.  the 2 VMS being a DC and a SQL Server 2014.  The server has two nics so it made sense to use the built in tools for NIC Teaming.  Everything appears to be running great, however clients report connection loss intermittently to the SQL Server (runs a small ERP package), which kicks them off the system.

This was really never an issue on the older server, which has me to believe it's not the core network, but rather the server itself.

The settings for the Team were initially:  Active/Active, Dynamic, Switch Independent (Standard options).  I tried making the Active/Active team to go into Active/Standy... no luck.  I also removed NIC02 from the Team which only left NIC01 in the team... no luck.  I then even disabled NIC02...no luck.

I'm wondering if there is a design flaw in the server build or if this is a know problem for NIC teaming in software?  I'm really at a loss on this one since it's so intermittent, but happens about every 1 or 2 hours for everyone.

Need some assistance.  I have several VMs where the time is ahead 2 hours.  When I go in and manually change the time it will revert back.

I noticed that the Hyper-V Time Synchronization service is stopped,  when I start it I get the message that it started and stopped again, so something is broken.  Ideas?

Hyper-V Manager Fails to'Create VHD's in the New Virtual Machine Wizard

I have an issue with Hyper-V Manager not being able to create the VHD in the New VM Wizard.  When trying to create a new VM the Hyper-V Manager fails to create the VHD or I should say it partially creates the file but returns a message saying that it failed to create it.  In the error message it says the file already exists and that I should delete it.  When I delete the file and start the wizard again it fails once again and repeats the same message.  I was able to create the VM and VHD through PowerShell at the server console and my Hyper-V Manager (running on Windows 8.1 with all servers and clients in a workgroup) could see and manage the VM created by PowerShell.  Does anyone have an idea as to why Hyper-V Manager can't create the VHD itself?  Thanks for your help.

Slow network transfer speeds between Hyper-V hosts in 10G network.

I'm running into a bit of a problem.

I have 5 hypervisors in a separate compute cluster with attached DSAN. I have a VM that has a shared VHDX drive. When I do a speed test to the disk using diskspd, and the VM and shared VHDX are on the same cluster node, I get great transfer speeds of around 1.2 gigabytes a second. I have 10G network on its own switch. Each Hypervisor is running a team of 4 NICS.

When I move the cluster storage owner where the shared VHDX is stored to a different node than the VM,  the speeds drop to 350 megabytes a second.  Any ideas where I can start?

Setup:
SCVMM
SMB Multichannel: disabled
VMQ: enabled

My Virtual Machine has no IP Address!

Ack. A user is suddenly unable to access his virtual machine. I dig around a bit. I cannot access the machine through Remote Desktop or through the Hyper-V console. And then lo and behold I discover that the machine has no IP address!

To determine that, I ran the following command in Powershell:

get-vm -name xxxxxxxx | select -ExpandProperty networkadapters

Name                  IsManagementOs   VMName      SwitchName     MacAddress     Status    IPAddresses

Networkadapter   False                     xxxxxxxxx   Virtual Switch    blahblah         {ok}      {}

(Note the empty brackets under IP address.)

So how do I access this machine so that I can fix whatever's up with its IP address?

Hi there,

tomorrow i have to clone a Virtual Server on the same Hyper-V host.

Can you please tell me what should i be warned about before i make the clone ?

Does Hyper-V change the SID of the cloned virtual server automatically when you use the clone feature ?

Or should i change the server configuration after the clone ?

Thank you.

I have a standalone hyper v server 2012 R2, non domain joined.

I have added a user to hyper-v administrators group which gives the user unrestricted access to hyper V. The user is able to login to the hyper V but user not able to see any VMs after launching hyper V manager. Error is "You do not have the required permission to complete the task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer 'localhost'

There is not SCVMM in our environment. I have tried using mmc authorization to assign user to the administrators group. it does not work too with same error.

Kindly help. Thanks!

File server for 300 users

Hello,
this is propably not hyper-v related question (maybe windows general) but .. maybe it is

We are planning to build Hyper-V based server for approx 300+ users.

We need around 4TB for user data.

Tech specs: 1xCPU / 12core, 64GB RAM
2x 300GB SAS (Raid1)
.. then bunch of disks for data

So, idea is:
Build the server on W2012 hyper-v (on 300GB)
Add few more disks (6x 1TB / Raid5)

Build VM (100GB system add more virtual disks for data (vhdx))

There is a chance that physical server will host few more VMs.  Should i add another CPU, or is it enough?

Would you combine Raid0 and Raid5 as well?

Added node to Cluster with replica running, how to set new node up for Replica.

Hi

I run a clustered Hyper-V setup, with an replica broker setup and is working.

It is setup to use Certificates. We have now added 2 new nodes, and I have created and installed the certificates correct.

When editing settings for the Replication broker, I can select the certificate, but I can't select apply, as the certificate is the same.

I have tried to remove the checkmark, apply, add the checkmark again, but the new nodes still don't show the certificate, and the replication does not work from these nodes.

What have I done wrong?

Regards Lars.

How to start a new Virtual Machine

Hello,

First of all, I am new using Hyper-V and this is only for an internal lab. I have Win10 Pro in my PC and I enabled Hyper-V features. I created a New Virtual Machine and I installed Windows Server 2012 Std. At the installation process I entered all required data, like language, time zone, etc. and the installation process finish. The first time, I assign a password for the Administrator. After sign in, the virtual machine just open a Command Window, but Windows OS never starts.

Am I missing something? what I need to do to start Windows?

Thanks.

It seems in Windows 10 there is type of virtual disk called "VHD Set". What is this? Is this similar to a shared disk feature offered by Virtual Box?

HP DL380p Gen8 Server won't boot after installing Hyper-V Role

Hi Everyone

Has anyone noted out in the field HP DL380p Gen8 Servers not booting after installing the Server 2012 (NOT R2) Hyper-V role?

Here in our test lab, as soon as I installed the Hyper-V role and rebooted, Server 2012  will not start (not even a BSOD) just a blank screen. The PROD Server is Server 2012, so we have to replicate in the test lab for DR purposes.

Product ID: 642120-371 BIOS is P70 07/01/2015

Intel VTPro etc enabled in BIOS. No USB3 in this system. Tried disabling USB and rebooting to no avail as per suggestions from HP.

The DL380p has a HP D2000 Disk Enclosure attached (PN AJ941A) and that initializes the 24 disks without issue.  I can't see anything in:

HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server - Product documentation, DL380p is compatible with Server 2012

Any ideas / resolutions most appreciated!

Hyper-VM Interval internet cutdown

Hello,
I´ve been facing a problem with the internet connection, which is connected to one of the Virtual machines in Hyper-V environment.
########################
I will Explain first the topology:

The VM has 2 Network adapters which are both connected to External Virtuel switches. One of them is used only for this Server which is connected to the Internet directly through a "Modem". The 2nd Adapter is used for our Local Network with a Static IP and without default gateway.
This VM is acting as a Router by using RRAS in order to do the NATing and it is configured as our Default Gateway for the whole Network.
The IP of this VM has been configured in the DHCP Route and DNS Forwarder.
########################
The problem:

There is an interval internet cut down every almost 30 second. Whenever I try to Test the internet speed, the internet speed goes up and start to fall down for a while and then it goes up again.
I have tried everything and I have been trying from more than 2 weeks but nothing has worked so far.  I tested it but with a physical server and it worked perfectly.

I would really really appreciate if someone has already faced and solved this problem or have a clue about it.

Windows Server 2012 r2 HyperV VM Lost Network Connectivity Intermittently

Hi,

One of our Windows 2012 r2 Hyper-V host has 4 2012 r2 VM's & one of them has strange Network issue. Recently this VM have started getting network disconnection with some IP's. There are two issues now with this VM whereas same Host has 3 other VM which are working fine without any issue. Integration services are already on updated version (6.3.9600.16384).

--> Whenever restart Host server, this VM lost complete network connectivity & i have to clear arp on my gateway CISCO router       to ping this VM back

--> Once VM Network restored, this VM is not getting connectivity with same Subnet some IP's whereas same subnet other IP's         are accessible.

Tried to update LAN Driver (Intel(R) I350 Gigabit Network Adapter) but issue remains same. Tried to disable VMQ on VM but still same issue.

Appreciate any help to resolve this issue.

Server 2008 R2 VM Active Directory not working

I'm setting up a sandbox to test something.  I've restored a Windows Image Backup of one of the DCs for our network as a VM in Hyper-V on a Server 2012 host machine which is not connected to the production network where the physical DC lives.

The VM is provisioned with a legacy network card which I set to the static IPv4 address that was the physical DC has (192.168.x.2).  The DNS server on this card is also 192.168.x.2.  There is another, regular network card configured which has a DHCP IPv4 address and DNS info.

Running dcdiag on the VM indicates the following test failures: Advertising, KCCevents, KnowsOfRoleHolders, NCSecDescriptions, Netlogons, Replication, RidManager, SystemLog and almost all the Enterprise tests.

Bottom line, I cannot authenticate users on the VM acting as the sole DC in the sandbox.  That's what I need to be able to do.  I don't care about other dcdiag errors related to replication et al. with the DCs missing in the sandbox.

Any ideas for fixing active directory on the VM so I can authenticate users in the sandbox?  TIA

Hyper-V Snapshot Merge/Deletion

Good Morning!

I would like to delete a snapshot that was created 11/2015 but would like to know if it is possible to merge it with the original vhd. It has been a few months since it's creation so I am worried about loss of data if I make any changes to it. From what I can see, it is eating up space and I have no documentation as to why the snapshot was created in the first place (previous admin was 'let go').

Hyper-V OS: Server 2008 R2; the VM includes 3 vhds (OS, database, db backups).

I appreciate your assistance and thank you in advance!

Mike
