Hyper-v license for dev environment

$

Hi,

Could you please advise if we need hyper-v license for new single server that will be used for development environment only (about 10 VMs)? Does it meters if we use for dev or production environment?

Another question, if we can "Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (x64)" from MSDN subscription, does that mean we have license and can install Hyper-v?

Thanks

Hyper V file transfer kills the network

Dear All,

We have 4 Hyper V VM installations on 2 HP DL 380 G8 servers and have they are connected to HP NSA 2040 SAN Storage through 6 Gbps Fibre channel. The physical machines are clustered.

Out of the 4, 2 are Clustered Hyper V's running Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 and we have 2 Clustered Hyper V for Database server running MS SQL 2012 R2.

The issue here is that the APP servers are slow in communicating with the DB server. The Hyper V's have a dedicated 4 * 1Gbps interface cards teamed and the packets are getting timed out. But from any other machine in the subnet the communications are proper.

When ever i try to copy a file from the DB server to the APP server using SMB share it kills my network, the copy will happen but after the copy is completed the network comes backup.

Its strange scenario. APP server 2 APP server smb copy is fine, and from DB to DB smb copy is fine but cannot copy between them.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks,
Sriram A Das

Three NIC's Only One Connected to network

I have a server that has three physical adapters. Where it sits now there is only one link so only one NIC is on the physical network.

My question is with Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. Can I create an internal switch and route it out the physical network adapter, or create an external switch on an unused network adapter and route it out the connected one?

With first generation all works fine and I was able to boot Ubuntu from differencing disk, but with second generation I got: Bool Failed. EFI SCSI Device.

Ubuntu is installed with UEFI (checked with this simple tests) boot and loads normally.

Secure boot in Frimware is turned off

Compare-VM not reporting Incompatibilities

I'm trying to migrate a bunch of guest VMs from 2012 servers to 2012R2.  I'm running Compare-VM to get a Compatibility Report.  The issue that I'm having is that no matter what incompatibilities I have, there only exist one incompatibility.  This is message ID 21024 'Virtual machine migration operation for 'guestVM' failed at migration source 'srcServer'.

I can see on the destination server that there are events in the log for the actual incompatibilities, be they processor incompatibility, incorrect network name, etc.

How can I convince Compare-VM to return the actual incompatibilities?

Thanks

Hyper -V and SOFS on same server

Can HyperV and SOFS co-exist on the same cluster node?  NO Hyper-V will not be used to access the SOFS shares but instead have their own disks not part of SOFS.   SOFS will be accessed by other server outside of the cluster.

Up to this point I have only read that Hyper-V can not be used to access SOFS on the same cluster using loopback.  But in the proposed configuration, loopback is not part of the solution.

Installing Windows server 2003 guest on host Windows server 2008 R2 fails after guest reboot...

Gurus,

I have tried installing a virtual Windows 2003 on a Hyper-V virtual machine and the installation goes through the reboot phase where 2003 starts up and continues with the setup, without any issues till it gets to the Regional and Language Options page. Clicking Next, Customize or Details buttons only causes the Regional window to act as if another dialog box is still open in modal mode somewhere.

I have tried the same on two other 2008 R2 host servers with the same result.

To help understand the failure's look, I took a 22 second video of the screen while I was clicking on the Next, Customize, and Details buttons but the result is the same regardless where I click on the screen. You will notice the Windows 2003 Regional screen's title bar flashing momentarily after each click. I clicked three times on the Next button and once each on the Customize and Details buttons.

The video files that I uploaded are each with different codecs, so please pick the one that best suits your installation.

Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nico

Hi everyone i would like to ask how can i fill a need of mine :

i ve colocated in datacenter a server (proliant dl320 g8) running windows server 2012 r2 + the hyper v service. the colo contract provides me with 2x1gbit upstream links and 2 static ips. the upstream links are teamed (TEAM 1) into a single 2gbit upstream  and i have assigned one of the static ips. I have the need to run a virtual machine (either a windows xp pro 32 or win 8.1 or 10 tech preview as they are the only oses i have licenses for) and bridge it to TEAM 1 , so that i can fully use a 2 gbit  upstream but assign to it the second ip address. how can i achieve this ? best regards !!

I deleted a snapshot tree when the VM was turned off. So... is there a way for me to revert it and do it the correct way?

Thanx

Is it safe to delete a checkpoint made on a VM which is a DC

Hello,

I have made some checkpoints on two domain controllers before discovering tonight that creating checkpoints on DCs is not supported.

I made the checkpoints about a month ago when the VM were running.

Is it safe to delete the checkpoints on the two VMs?

Thanks all!

Does it have any impact changing from iSCSI to FCoE with Hyper-V fail over cluster in a VDI env

Hi Team,

we are planning to make use of iSCSI protocol from EMC SAN storage to the UCS blade loaded with Hyper-v failover cluster based xendesktop VDI with PVS.

may be after 3-4 months later we will switch the protocol from iSCSI to FCoE in VDI environment so, does it have any impact? what i meant is not the downtime but, more related to WS 2012 R2 Hyper-v based system will work with out formatting the initial LUNs created with iSCSI protocol?

unable to connect disk management

hello all,

i have hyper-v failover cluster system with two hosts and 28 VMs...

ı used DPM backup program for backing up VM....

Our Enviroment:

Host OS: Win2012R2 DC
all VM run Cluster Shared Volumes on SAN

VM Os cane win2008R2E or win2012R2S

All VM has one Protection Group for DPM also  which has different Backup Time

For Example:

Saturday night DPM run  and snapped VM backup no problem.

I have interesting issue after backup  VM

after that i want to connect Disk Management Service on Host, this host is VM owner,

i did not connect VM owner but i can connect other node...

Shortly if i run DPM backup available time, backup is ok after that, VM owner disk management can be hang status "connecting to disk management"

have can i solve this issue?

Also i can restart vds service on production system?

Please inform me

Grouping two server together on same Host.

In the Hyper configuration that is setup it has 7 hosts each with several guest servers.

I have two servers that I would like to keep together.  So if HYPERV-SRV01 is placed into maintenance mode I would like to have guest-server01 and guest-server02 move together to another Hyper-v host (HYPERV-SRV02).  All of these host are in the same blade server chasse.

Hyper-V Replica VMs - Multiple IPs

$

Hi all, couple of quick questions about how to set multiple IP addresses on a primary and replica hyper-v VM. Scenario: There's a four node 2012R2 hyper-v failover cluster in datacenter1 and also a four node 2012R2 hyper-v failover cluster in datacenter 2. Replication for a couple of vms are set up through the hyper-v broker from DC1 to DC2. One of the vms has multiple IP addresses on network adapter 1. In the VM settings on the primary and replica vm you can see the Failover TCP/IP settings which allow you to set a single IP address. Ah, the questions now:

Is there a way to set multiple ip addresses on both the primary and replica vms on the network adapter and if yes how would you do that on both?

What if you have multiple network adapters on the primary and replica vm? Can you somehow set up multiple ip addresses on the first adapter and a single IP on the second adapter?

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

Hyper-V Snapshot Issue on Exchange server

Hyper-v 2008 R2

I have a 2TB host in which I am running 2 VM's

Exchange was a 900gb Fixed disk VM

Terminal server 200gb Fixed.

I was working remotely on my iPhone on the Exchange server (I know, don't ask) when I think I accidentally hit the snapshot button inside of Hyperv Manager.

The user called and said the server stopped working and I quickly realized it unexpectedly rebooted and the Address Book service failed to start automatically. I was trying to navigate my way around on my phone and thats when I think I hit the snapshot button.

I didn't realize this until 2 days later when looking inside my VHDS folder that a new AVHD file was created that was 818gb and timestamped exactly when I was working on it remotely.

The original VHD file was dated 2 days earlier and 825gb

The snapshot is NOT showing up in Hyperv Manager at all so I'm not sure what the best next steps are.

I figured I would first take the VM offline and export it to a another location before doing anything to preserve the Exchange server. I am running a Barracuda so I'm not worried about losing any email as that will trap everything.

I noticed in the settings of Hyperv Manager for Exchange that it is using the AVHD file as the primary file.

Questions

1 - If I take it offline, shouldn't the 2 files merge without me doing anything else? I just wasn't sure since the Snapshot does not show up in SCVMM or Hyperv manager.

2 - I should be able to see this process in SCVMM?

3- How long will it take to merge 800gb? I've seen varying results depending on disk speed, etc.

With an exchange server, this obviously needs to be done delicately without data loss. I assume my statement about the original Exporting of the VM will cover my bases for that?

Thoughts on how to proceed?

Thanks!

Jim

How to COPY/MOVE between 2 different W2K12 R2 FAILOVER CLUSTER

$

Hello,

I'll have to perform a migration from different Cluster (From Cluster A to Cluster B)

Both cluster are quite similar and Virtual Machine migration using  SCVMM is working.

But  that migration is done through 2 different datacenters (WAN), and when migration is done we will have to virtual machines IP, etc... (but this is another battle)

The question is that we would like to perform a Virtual Machine "copy" instead of perform a Move, the reason is that we would like to have a quick way to perform a Rollback in case of problems.

Move with Move-SCVirtualMachine it's easy, but there is no 'Copy' function.

I may work using some export/import techniques and recreate the VM resource on the target Cluster, but it requires some time and specific scripting.

Does anybody have any idea suggestion about how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

SCVMM and "Virtual Hard disks" directory

$

Hello,

We have noticed that Virtual Machines created using SCVMM doesn't create "Virtual Hard Disks" directory and puts the VHDX files into the Virtual Machine data root.

But if VM are created using Hyper-V defaults values this directory is created.

How can we set/define SCVMM to use also this directory?

We would like to have the same directory structure when VM are created, and the usage of "Virtual Hard disks" directory is quite clean directory sctructure.

Best Regards.
