Virtual SAN Manager Configuration

$

I am trying to configure Virtual SAN Manager for the first time and whenever I attempt to start the virtual machine that I have the Fiber Channel Adapter connected to I get an error which I will display later.

The configuration is as follows: I have a host system running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V, attached to that host is a HP MSA 2040 that is connected through a Single Path Fiber Channel connection with an 8GB/s PCI controller card.

Below is the error message I receive when I attempt to start the VM with the Fiber Channel Adapter added to the VM.

Currently I have three servers in Hyper V 2012
which form a cluster of hyper.

one of the nodes genre me a blue screen and generates minidump log attached.

the server generates an alert of hardware RAM, but according to HP indicates that a driver is Microsoft, I could help

File location problem after moving vm's from vmware to hyper-v cluster

I migrated some VM's from VMware esxi to hyper-v 2012r2. When I run the validation report a few of the vm's come up with this warning.

The following virtual machines have referenced paths that do not appear
accessible to all nodes of the cluster. Ensure all storage paths in use by
virtual machines are accessible by all nodes of the cluster.

Virtual MachineStorage PathNodes That Cannot Access the Storage Path

Virtual Machine WebserverC:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-VAll

Due to this issue, live migration fails. I need to get them in the proper location, C:\ClusterStorage\volume1. What is the best way to fix this problem as I don't see anything obvious.

Thanks.

VHD for Hyper-V Guest on Server 2012 R2

Hi there

I have a guest Windows 2008 R2 machine on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V host. It had some problems booting up so I removed the VHD and now trying to add the same VHD again. The VHD sits on a SAN and I've used iSCSI Initiator on the Windows 2012 R2 Server to connect to the target disk. I can connect to the disk and can browse the disk plus also copy all contents to another disk.

But when I try to add the VHD which is located on this iSCSI Target Disk to a Hyper-V guest, I get an error message:

"Error applying Hard Drive changes. XXXX failed to modify device Virtual Hard Disk (Virtual machine ID 81E9D60A-......)

Failed to open attachment "D:\Hyper-V\XXXX.vhdx". Error: The media is wrtie protected.

Any idea why this is happening when I have full Read & Write access to then iSCSI Disk?

Hi Members,

 I have HYPER-V Server on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have One VM on Which I attached one dynamic VHD size : 600 GB

On VM in which this VHD attached shows 399 GB Free Out of 600 GB

ON Hyper-V VHD Inspection it shows 599 GB Drive

Questions:

If data on this gets 200 GB then why it gets full space on cluster although its dynamic VHD

I built a forest with 2012R2 DC datacenter, Exchange 2013, and wanted to join my Hyper Vo server to that DC from the workgroup it started from. Now I cannot RDP to the HyperV server. but can the DC. It appears to be in a hung state. Befor I reboot the Hyper Vi server been researching for what the issue may be. I know you need to restart to join a domain. What if the DC VHD is on the server. Maybe the way our of this is to spin up another DC on a another box>

Hyper-V cluster slow network speeds/ network config issue?

Hi

I'm looking at a setup that's as follows:

2 Cisco SG300-28 switches.

2 HP2920 switches for iSCSI (dedicated switches for only iSCSI)

Standalone Windows Server 2012R2 Hyper-V host: SH1 (hosts DC for Cluster). 1 Quad port Broadcom nic. 2 ports teamed for VM traffic, 2 for Management traffic. All nics are 1 GB.

Cluster host 1 Windows Server 2012R2 Hyper-V host: CL1. 1 Quad port Broadcom nic with 2 ports teamed for management. 2 Quad port intel nics with 2 ports for iSCSI (MPIO), 2 ports teamed for Cluster traffic, 2 ports teamed for Live Migration traffic, 2 ports teamed for VM Traffic. All nics are 1GB.

Cluster host 2 Windows Server 2012R2 Hyper-V host: CL2. 1 Quad port Broadcom nic with 2 ports teamed for management. 2 Quad port intel nics with 2 ports for iSCSI (MPIO), 2 ports teamed for Cluster traffic, 2 ports teamed for Live Migration traffic, 2 ports teamed for VM Traffic. All nics are 1GB.

One team member from each host connects to each switch. So for example, on CL1 one nic from the Management team will connect to a port on the SG300 switch1 and the other will connect to the SG300 switch 2.Simillarly, on CL2, one nic from the Management team will connect to a port on the SG300 switch1 and the other will connect to the SG300 switch 2.

The SG300s have 3 VLANs. VLAN 1 (Management and VM Data - no choice here), VLAN 6 (Live Migration), VLAN 7 (Cluster Traffic).  The SG300s are not connected to each other directly and have one port connected to the HP core switch (10/100 switch that I do not have access to). SG300-1>>HP Core  & SG300-2 >>HP Core.

VLANs 6 and 7 are not trunked across to the HP Core.

Nic teaming on all adaptors is set to Switch independent and Dynamic.

Everything works fine in terms of fail-over, etc. However, Network speeds are pretty bad. For example,

Data transfer (3 GB file):

From SH1 to CL1: 30MB/s av.

From SH1 to CL2: 10MB/s av.

From DC on SH1 to CL1: 30 MB/s av.From DC on SH1 to CL1: 10 MB/s av.

From SH1 to VM on CL1: 30MB/s Av.From SH1 to VM on CL1: 10MB/s Av.

From CL1 to CL2: 800+MB/S but it uses SMB Multipathing as data goes across the cluster and Live Migration Teams as well.

I've changed the teaming mode to Hyper-V port and address hash and still experience poor speeds. In some cases 1 way traffic goes up but the other way, it stays at a maximum of 30MB/s.

If however, I disconnect the SG300(switch1) from the HP core and connect it instead to the SG300 (Switch2) and connect that to the HP Core, My speeds on every transfer go up to 600-900 MB/s. For example: SG300-1>>SG300-2>>HP Core.

The SG300's do not show any packet loss or errors. The cabling is CAT6 and tested. I'm aware of the Boradcom/ VMQ issue and for testing have disabled it on the physical nics on the Standalone host. THis didn't make a difference. I have  broken the teams on the Standalone host (SH1), disabled all nics but one management nic and tested transfers to and from my laptop (plugged into the same switch) with no difference. I've tried with Jumbo frames on and off and with STP (Rapid) enabled and disabled on all interfaces.

Can anyone please offer some insight on the above? Additionally, is the setup correct or do the SG300 switches need to be interlinked in addition to be connected to the HP Core (I would imaging this would cause network loops unless they were stacked)? Would I be correct in assuming that STP should be enabled on all interfaces except for the uplink to the HP Core?

Thanks,

HA

Very Strange Network Issue With Two Guests on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Cluster

$

Hi all.  We're having a odd issue with two guests on our 2012 R2 failover cluster.

In a nutshell, if we shutdown a particular server (I'll call it Server A) another totally different server (Server B) on the same node loses it's network connectivity to the domain. If we start server A back up, network connectivity returns on server B.

At first I thought server A might be running a service that was somehow linked to server B, so I decided to disable server A's NIC.  Interestingly, that had no affect on server B's connectivity.

The next step I tried was pausing server A and again, no adverse affect on server B's connectivity.

Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action didcause server B to lose its network connection.

One other clue is that if I ping server B from either of the Hyper-V hosts in the cluster, I never lose network connection to server B.

So I would suspect this is some network issue on the cluster, but I'm kind of at a loss where to go from here.

Has anyone seen this behavior before or does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions I can try?

Thanks!

does Increasing Number of CPUs take space ?

Good Day,

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V , that includes a Virtual machine its OS is also Win2008 R2.

I want to increase the number of CPUs on the VM from 1 to 4  , will this take additional space on the Host machine ? such as the RAM it creates a file on the Host machine its size is same as the RAM size.

Running MS Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 - Can i install 2VMS?

$

Hello everybody...

I am on the way of installing the Visual SVN server and JIRA on our company server and I have few questions to you guys. I have read an article about Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 running Hyper-V on this webpage:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2013/09/03/understanding-licensing-for-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials-and-the-windows-server-essentials-experience-role.aspx

and I am a bit confused. From my understanding of the licensing of MS Server 2012 Essentials R2 I can run Hyper-V role with two VM instances of Windows Server 2012 Essentials at no cost but with only Hyper-V role enabled on a physical server? My question is if I will install Windows Server 2012 Standard on a separate license just fro JIRA and SVN can I run it on a VM without any problem with licensing of Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2? I know it sounds a bit complicated but I could not find the answer on my question anywhere....

Trouble Connecting 2 VM's

Hi, I hope someone can point me in the right direction. It has been a number of years since I had anything to do with networking and I am obviously way out of practice, also I have never used Server 2012 or Hyper-V so I am getting confused.

I have been asked if I can help set up a network for a very small company who can only stretch to one server, as such I am probably trying to ask a lot from one machine. As you can see from the diagram below, I am trying to implement a secure internal network (e.g. internal.local) and an external connection (e.g. external.com). On the external side I would like a website and DirectAccess, on the internal side I need a subnet (?) that can accommodate file and printer sharing. The maximum number of internal nodes will be 15 – 20; with some of them requiring wireless access.

My biggest problem is that I can’t connect the 2 VM’s to each other, no matter what I try they won’t ping. I have tried setting up the Host server and VM1 as routers (RRAS) and even tried PowerShell but I’m not having any luck.

Hello,

I'm facing a critical issue here, i have windows server 2012 host with hyper-v role and 6 vm's ruining on it, suddenly one of vm's (service manager) stopped working as normal because of the space of many snap shoots that fill up the storage space of host partition. the action we taken, that we delete all snap shoots to reduce the space of that VM. the VM machine after that merged the virtual hard desk to run again, the operating system up but many services being down such as remote desktop it's enabled but cannot connect remotely, also the portal in service manager being down, my log in account being temporary account .. in final, the operating system doesn't work as normal that effect my system center service manager too.

Thanks in advance and my apologize  about my lang :)

Error using Window Server Backup on 2012R2 Hyper-V to network share

Hi

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V server. It runs a Windows 2012 R2 VM (called server-1).

I want to backup the VM to a network location (\\network-1\server-1_backup$). To do this, I installed Windows Server Backup from the command line and configured a backup to look like this:

C:\Users\admin>wbadmin enable backup
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

The scheduled backup settings:

Bare metal recovery : Not Included
System state backup: Not Included
Volumes in backup: (null)
Components in backup: HyperV\server-1
Files excluded: (null)
Advanced settings: VSS Backup Option (FULL)
Location to store backup: \\network-1\server-1_backup$\
Times ofday to run backup: 04:00

But when I run this backup manually, I get the following error:

C:\Users\admin>wbadmin start backup
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Do you want to create a backup using the same configuration that you use forscheduled backups?

The odd thing is that if I set this up from a Windows 2012 Server using the GUI to exactly the same network destination, the backup works no problem. It just doesn't work when using Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V configured through a command line.

Any help appreciated,

2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster two node design with abundance 1Gbps NICs and FC storage

$

Hello All,

First post so please be gentle!

We are currently in the process of building/testing the upgrade of two node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.

  • Two hosts built with Datacentre 2012 R2 which will host approx. 30 VM's.
  • Shared storage will be fault tolerant FC- connection.
  • 10, (yes 10!) 1Gbps NICs are available, Intel i350.

trying to decide on teaming interfaces using native LBFO and the 2008 'style' of using un-converged networking, or teaming up most interfaces and using QoS.  Can find many/numerous examples of using 10Gbps NICs and converged, however 10Gbps networking isn't an option right now.

recommendations appreciated.

thanks

Unable to install Windows 8.1 on Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V

Hi.

We've recently gone from Server 2008 R2 (Data Center) to Windows 2012 R2 (Data Center) and we're now trying to install Windows 8.1 clients on our Hyper-V solution.

When using the virtual machine creation wizard I create two test machines.
One machine is a gen1 and one machine is gen2 both are set to install via network (MDT 2013) and both a given a 40GB disk and 4GB of ram. Both installations fail.

"Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware".

According to everything I've found on the web this could happen if you try and install Windows 7 - something to do with 4K disks I think. This shouldn't happen on Windows 8.x.

I've seen a few posts where they explain the IDE controller being unable to handle 4K disks so that might explain something but in my case I also have a gen2 machine where disk is attached to a SCSI controller.

As I understand it a server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V should be able to have a Windows 8.1 installed on a VHDX file on a SCSI controller.

Can anyone help out here?

Thank you!

Looking for workaround Hyper V replication with Live Migration due to SAN limitations.

My current setup uses Server 2012 R2. I have 5 primary host servers and 3 secondary. I have Dell Equallogix 6110e SANs 34tb on both sides. I am limited to 15tb volumes on my SANs. I would like to replicate all of my VMs. Currently I am only able to replicate my most valuable VMs. I have a total of 24tb worth of VMs. It seems that the only ways i have thought of to do this would require losing the ability to live migrate. Is there any way to replicate from one cluster to 2 volumes on the secondary cluster without losing live migration?
