Host and VMs network configuration

$

Hi,

We have additional Network cards on the Host hyper-v server. Does it make sense to configure Host and VM network in this way?

Host network configuration for Hyper-v virtual network switch:

1NIC  ---
2NIC  --- host_team_1

3NIC ---
4NIC --- host_team_2

VM network configuration:

host_team_1 ---
host_team_2 --- VM_team_1

Would we benefit from this configuration?

Thanks

MPIO Dual Controller ALUA BSOD in Cluster

Hello,

I'm having issues with iSCSI MPIO on ALUA-enabled dual controller SAN (Promise VessR2600tiD).
The device is 2012 R2 certified (http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/item.aspx?idItem=752f327a-05c8-ec2a-95c5-671460e6b7a9&bCatID=1282) with current firmware. We are running VM workloads on 2 LUN's atm over dedicated 10G iSCSI connections (Intel X540-T1/T2 NIC's) in a 2-node Hyper-V cluster.

The NIC's have stripped down protocol support (ipv4 only with jumbo frames) and dedicated subnet.
Everything works fine until mpio kicks in. When I try to failover a controller on the SAN (change preferred one), I get strange BSOD's msdsm.sys.

What's stranger is that I basically tried this recently:
2x Hyper-V servers in a cluster, no MPIO, on LUN1, LUN2 on CTRL 1
1x STANDALONE server WITH MPIO on LUN3 (Lun masking turned on) on CTRL2

If I change ALUA preference on LUN3 -> CTRL1, Hyper-V cluster servers get BSOD, not the standalone server. Also,
on the standalone server, the Path State stays Active/Optimized, although TPG State changes to standby and the second portal becomes active.

The vendor wasn't able to help me and I'm kinda at wit's end here. It seems that no matter what server I try to setup MPIO on, the cluster servers get BSOD, even if the server with MPIO is not a part of the cluster nor it shares LUN with the cluster. There's nothing in the server nor SAN logs.

Hyper V 2012 , error cant access the virtual machine settings

Hello Guys,

we have 2 Hosts installed with Windows Server 2012 Standard. These 2 Hosts are configured as an Failover-Cluster. Also we have an IBM Storwhize connected directly via SCSI to both hosts. Its configured as a shared volume in Failover Cluster Manager.

we have the following problem:

From time to time, when i want to open hyper-v settings on host002 , i cant access this, i get this error:

cant access hyper-v settings, running out of memory or disk

But my disk space and RAM is OK. the strange thing is that the virtual machines are accesable via RDP.

To solve this issue temporarily i have to reboot HOST002. If i reboot host002 then it works, but host001 has the same problem.. I think its an issue with the Failover Configuring, because all that started when we have shutted down both servers, then i think failover cluster wanted to move these virtual machines (high availability) and then get in errors.

it would be very glad if anyone can help me (remote or whatever)

All virtual machines are running perfectly, but i cant access the settings and our backup tool VEEAM cant backup the virtual machines..

Thanks Edmond

Recommendations for Sizing Hyper-V

Hi there,

I've two servers http://www8.hp.com/emea_middle_east/en/products/proliant-servers/product-detail.html?oid=5195898 with 128GB Memory and 4 Gigabit Ethernet.

I want to run multiple AD instances, File Server, SQL, Exchange & Sharepoint on it. Data will be on a SAN. We've around 100 users. Other than Exchange, rest of the roles have minimal load. e.g., SQL is only for supporting management and monitoring systems. is it OK if I run each VM on RAID 0 disk? My theory is that if a disk fails, the service will resume from the other server. It's difficult to assess the current load of servers as there are many under different domains and stand alone systems as well. My plan is to consolidate them all. Running Hyper-V from USB is a recommended practice or is it supported only development systems? It would help me use one more disk for VM if I can run Hyper-V from USB in production. I understand that AD 2012 R2 is fully supported on VMs now. The old recommendation of having the primary DC on a physical server still valid? Our is a small setup.

I'm sure many of you have gone through these scenarios. Please share your experiences. Also if there are easy to follow books or articles on these subject, please point that out too.

Thanking you,

Shereef

Hi, all

I have a problem in the management of the machines in Hyper-V, when I try to open the VM console I get the following error:

an error occurred while attempting to launch the Virtual Machine
Connection application for the selected virtualmachine

however when I click on the settings I get this other:

Cannot access the settings for the selected virtual machine. the
computer "localhost" failed to perform the requested operation

I tried to add my user account in InitialStore.xml with AzMan,

with icacls “<virtualmachinefolder>” /grant “NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\<virtualmachineguid>”:F /T

but did not solve my problem.

Any idea?

tnx for now

Hyper-V Replication - Intitial Replication Option Using Existing Virtual Machine

Hi Members,

I want to enable Hyper-V Replication from Hyper-V Cluster (Primary Site) to Hyper-V Standalone (DR Site) all required settings successfully configured like Hyper-V Replica Broker ,AD Object and others.

I Tested Replication works fine When I Start With “INITIAL REPLICATION” method using Network.

I have very limited bandwidth between Primary Site and DR Site and VM which I want to replicate are very large (for initial Replication Method)

So I want to use third method of replication “Use Existing ….”

For this I copy whole folder named as Windows 8.1 which contains VM configuration Files,VHD’s

When I start replication wizard it automatically creates folder named as “HYPER-V Replica”

Under this folder I Pasted My VHD on Virtual Disk Folder and same for Virtual Machine folder.

But Still Got Error Screen Shot Attached

I Also Tried From Replica Server (To Import But it was unable to locate required folder)

Screen Shots Attached.

Best practices on Hyper-V VMs migration/management

Hello,

Currently, we have Hyper-V running on our old server(Windows Server 2008) with all the VMs stored locally.

We are planning to get a new Windows Server 2012 R2.

I was advised on the opportunity to move the VMs off the server to the dedicated workstation machine(Windows 8.1).

My question is it a good idea to keep the VMs on the workstation, while managing them from Windows Server 2012?

I need your advice on this.

All ideas welcome.

Thanks

Two Dell R720 with 8 Nics each (4 x Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_165F & 4 x Intel(R) Ethernet Server Adapter I340-T2 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1516)

All drivers/firmware is upto date (BCMis 16.6.0.4, Intel is 12.6.47.1)

Teaming LACP/Hyper-V Port

3 Vlans set: Management, Live Migration, Cluster

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName “Live Migration” -Access -VlanId 201

Live migration jumps from 3% to 52%, then struggles one by one from 52% to 81% then it finishes almost instantly

Checked & re-checked everything, can not figure what is causing it

Help appreciated

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'

I have been searching for a fix for this issue for sometime.

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'

and

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

this error have been posting on the host server 2008 R2, with a hyper-V running server 2012 R2, which is the eval version vhd from Microsoft.

I have tried the patch on the server 2008 R2 host and the nic delete and rescan option with varied reboots and such between each step of the process just to try every possible combination.

The error persists. Are there any other suggested solutions for fixing this problem. Also the drivers have all been updated along with the system firmware.

thanks,

Hyper-V Integration Services Stopped

Hi,

I have looked thru the forums and seem to be hitting a dead end or my search skills are failing. Anyhow, I have 2 Windows 2012 R2 DataCentre hosts running. They are running Hyper-v exclusively. I just noticed the other day that all the services for Hyper-V are stopped except for Virtual Machine Management. If I click on any of the stopped services, it will start up then promptly stop. It will give an error of:The Hyper-V x service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. I have reviewed my Windows Event logs and there are no warning or errors.

Some other background, there is SCCM 2012 R2 (5.0.7958.1401) in the environment, but no SCCM agent is installed at the moment. There is also VMM 2012 (3.2.7672.0) and the agent for this is installed on both hosts. Both of the hosts have been re-imaged in the last 2 months, so I don't think it's some weird age related weirdness. I also removed the hyper-v role from one of the hosts, rebooted and then re-added it. This made no difference. I also tried to add about of services to the restrictedservices in the registry as I had come across this in the wild of the internet, but this made no difference.

Any thoughts, idea's?

Adding a Node to Hyper-V Cluster

Hello All.............I am running Private Cloud (Infrastructure as a Service) in my environment with Hyper-V Failover Cluster and Windows Azure Pack.  There is Remote Desktop Gateway in place as well.

I want to add a node to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.   What are the things that I need to consider before adding a node to the Cluster?

VMM Agent?

RDG Certificate?

I would appreciate if someone could guide me through it as to what I need to keep in mind before adding a node and how I should plan it and do it.  Thanks.

Is there a work around for this issue which will let us fix VMs with the issue in situ?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2979256

Also - if i understand the problem correctly, we are not meant to upgrade the Integration Components of 2012 R2 VMs via offline servicing at all? What if there is an upgraded needed? What are the best practice methods?

Cheers.

Manager Hyper-V Server from Another Subnet

I have a bunch of Hyper-V servers sitting on a separate vlan and they have their own special subnet.

I used to be able to install Hyper-V Manager on my desktops and simply specify the Hyper-V servers and manage them remotely however, recently they do not allow me to communicate with them if I am sitting within a different vlan / subnet.

They Hyper-V servers firewalls are disabled, the VLAN firewall rules allow for full connectivity between my management PCs to the Hyper-V servers so I know it's not anything to do with firewall policies.

Something on the Hyper-V server is not allowing me to administer it. I have added an additional NIC to my management PC which I stuck a leg into the other VLAN by adding an IP without a gateway to it and it allows me to administer it remotely. So I now know for fact that it has something to do with the different subnet.

I really need some help here as adding NICs to administer the servers is simply not an option.

Thank You!

Hi

I have a Server 2012 with Hyper-V on it.

I need to shutdown all machines but an ORDERLY shutdown, not just turnoff.

the host is not a member of the domain but of a workgroup, all VM are Domain members...

Does anyone have an example script to give me?

Thank you!

Hi ,

we have configure windows teaming on the hyper-v host 2012 R2 , and creating virtual swich on the teaming interface

when i assign a  Virtual machine to  that switch , i get latency for browsing the websites inside the VM and  time out error

if i assign the virtual switch to non team adapter  , there is no error and no latency

Do you know why the window teaming do latency ?

Virtual Network Adapter Not Working

Hi

I have added an external virtual switch that points to my WIFI card on the host, I have tried checking/unchecking 'allow managment operating system to share this adapter' and I have added the network adapter in the virtual machine settings.

However no network adapters come up in my VM for some reason.

Networking works in the host OS fine. I am trying to use my hosts wifi configuration for the virtual machine.

I'm unsure what else to try, the guest is Windows XP pro and the host is windows 10

Hyper-V 2012 removing replication on virtual machine

Hi all

If you remove replication from a virtual machine how long does this take to update the replication partner? Is there a best practice for removing?

I have a three node and two node cluster running on Windows 2012. I removed replication from a VM and the partner still shows replication enabled.

Thanks in advance.

Need help with Hyper-V broker

$

I have seen many articles stating that a Hyper-V broker is necessary for failover replicas. Just little on how to do this. I have a 5 node cluster on the Primary side and a 3 node cluster on the DR side both with EqualLogic Sans.  I have created the role for the Hyper-V Broker on both sides. ProdBroker and DRBroker are their respective names and have added them to my servers in AD. They are both on the VM public subnet to use my teamed NICs. Configuring the broker is where I get lost. My questions is this: The "Specify the primary server" in the Add Authorization Entry of the primary side window should either be one of the primary host servers or the cluster, correct? The next section "Specify the default location to store replica files" should be set to the DR cluster, I believe. Or should it be the cluster share or the individual mounted volumes in the share. Also, what do I set the DRBroker to? I don't want to replicate that direction. All articles, forums and blogs have been very vague so specifics are appreciated. Any help? Thanks

Rouge Checkpoints / Differencing disks

$

A couple of days ago some of our VMs started creating avhdx files when our backups ran (DPM 2012 r2)

We know that DPM uses checkppoints, but until now these checkpoints have behaved as expected, being removed and merged when the backup is complete. This also happens on the affected servers, with the exception that the avhdx files stay (and are used by the server). No check points are visible, and using Get-VMSnapshot shows no checkpoints/snapshots - so basically the backup process just creates new avhdx files every time we back up the servers...

The strange thing here is that ONLY disks attached a virtual SCSI controller seem to have the problem...

As an added bonus the VMs settings window claims the VM has Checkpoints, but nothing in the Hyperv manager (and the /Snapshots folder is empty)

Any idea how to fix this problem?
