Remotefx problems with league of legends (directx 9.0c)

I'm trying to get remotefx with hyper-v to work so I can occasionally play from work and so that I can let a bunch of us (me and some friends) play league together when they're at my place without them always needing to bring over their computers

Right now I can't seem to get remotefx to run league of legends at all, I've successfully loaded remotefx onto a windows 8 enterprise guest and installed league of legends and direct x on it, but as soon as the game loads it doesn't even go passed 1 fps.

On the same windows 8 enterprise guest with remotefx I am getting a lot of 80 fps in 3dmark11 tests, so this seems really weird.

The host is using windows server 2012 r2 with gtx 780 and latest video driver installed, guest is windows 8.1 enterprise with remotefx enabled

I've read someone playing league of legends using remotefx in a windows 2008 server from their work, I've tried contacting him but he hasn't responded since I guess he's no longer active on that community where I asked

HDD size keep increasing

Dear All,

I have one Hyper V server that is running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise. This Hyper V is used for AD and CAS and mailbox of exchange server. I have built 3 VMs inside. For instance, VM1, VM2, and VM3. each of the VM has been given 100GB HDD size and all is fixed disk VHD. The HDD partition size that is used to store the VHD is 700GB size. Currently, each of the VM HDD utilization is less than 50%.

Now, this is the problem. currently, I have been monitoring the HDD size from the hyper v server. I found that though each of the VM is not really fully utilized, the partition that hold the VHD for the 3VMs is keep increasing. Currently it has taken over 600GB, though the total of the 3 VMs VHD size is just about 300GB. it is very strange. when I check on the properties to check the total size of the VHD folders inside the partition, It is shown that only 300 over GB being used.

Kindly advise me on what happen to the partition, which cause the size is keep growing.

thanks for your attention.

Henry

Failed to resolve the Replica Server- Hyper V 2012

Hi,

In my environment I have 2 Hyper V Hosts, with 2 VM's on Hyper V1, we have configured replication to Hyp V2 Server. Currently both Servers from V1 are replicated to V2 with replication health showing as normal.
We have checked and tested the failover and confirmed as successful. The planned failover is working fine for the Server. But when I try to perform the  'reverse replication direction after failover' its getting failed at the step 'reverse replication direction'.

As a troubleshooting method we performed the below:
-The replication and planned failover is working fine
-Changed the SPN in AD under machine attributes, so as to communicate with Hyper V hosts
-Confirmed proper communications/ping as available
-Confirmed the port 80 as opened on both Hyper V hosts
-Port 443 currently closed (do we need to open?)
-Modified the hosts file and added the information of both Hyper V hosts on both Servers

-We have also turned off the Firewall on both Hyper V host Servers and tried the same but still the issue persists

Our previous scenario was like the below:

Initially both Hyper V Host Servers were in workgroup and we faced similar issue while configuring replication.
Hence we have added the same to our domain that is domain.local. Also checked and confirmed that "Primary DNS suffix of this computer" check box as checked.

A quick response is much appreciated, Thank you !!!!!!

Re-use Hyper V VM built in Windows Server 2008 R2 host in a new Windows Server 2012 host

Hi Forum members,

I was assigned a Windows Server 2008 R2 host machine with Hyper-V which I used to build many VM's for testing.  This host machine now is going to be replaced with a new Windows Server 2012 host machine.  Is it possible for me to continue to use those VM's without any migration (e.g. is it possible to import or simply move the *.vhd + *.avhd files from the 2008 Server to 2012 Server and use them)?

Thanks and Regards,

Hien

Hyper-V only able to ping remote (laptop) using IPV4, fails with IPV6

I have a desktop setup to remotely manage Hyper-V and it is working fine.

I am trying to setup remote management from my laptop.

The server is failing to ping the laptop using IPV6.

The desktop can ping both the server an the laptop using names and IPV6 option -6

The laptop can ping the desktop and the Hyper-V server using name and IPV6 option -6

Hyper-V server can ping the desktop, but not the laptop using IPV6 option -6

Everything works fine with IPV4 .

I have checked and rechecked the Hyper-V server Host table and it has what appears to be correct issues for both the desktop and the laptop.

Any other thoughts on what to check?

Thanks!

I have a Server with Windows Server 2008 (NOT R2) running with the Hyper-V role installed and 8 VMs.

I want to move them to our new server running Hyper-V 2012 R2.

I tried to copy the original files to the 2012 Server and Import them as described in a similar article on this site (not allowed to post a link) but I get following error message (translated from German):

Error while importing.

The VM-Version of the virtual Maschine xxx could not be updated: unknown error 0x80004005

The VM-Version 1.0 of the virtual Maschine is not supported.

Any suggestons / ideas on how to fix this Problem?

Hyper-V 2012R2 FO Cluster with synthetic Fibre Channel guests - Quick Migrate ok, Live mostly not

Hi,

Mentioned post were of no heklp though. In this setup I have 2 2012R2 Hyper-V boxes in a Failover Cluster and a HP MSA2040 SAN. Within this cluster I have 2 2012R2 guests that are also clustered. They have 2 Synthetic Fibre Channel Adapters, each one connected to another physical port on the host. Quick Migration works any time, Live Migration only once in a while. I get messages like:

'<GuestOS>' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to finish reserving resources with Error 'Unspecified error' (0x80004005). (Virtual machine ID 8AABB243-7333-4729-A060-120EF8E993A7)

Facts:

  • Basic stuff like NPIV support is ofcourse enabled and all HBA's and switches support this;
  • MPIO is setup accordingly to HP recommendations;
  • The hosts have 2 fibre ports each connected to a seperate fibre switch;
  • Guest VM's have 2 Fibre Adapters, each connected to a seperate Virtual SAN;
  • Initially I had all WWPN's defined in one host on the SAN, as per a recemondation in one of the mentioned threads I split that up and made a seperate host on the switch for each WWPN set. As the switch only cares about WWPN / WWNN's rather than the aliases they are 'bound' to this did not help;
  • Virtual SAN's are equally setup on the hosts, and each matching Virtual SAN is connected to the same Fibre Switch so physical pathing should be ok;
  • Zoning is correct; all 4 wwpn's are added to zoning and can access the luns (if not it would not work 'sometimes');
  • When I start the live migration, the 'not-active-WWPN-set' is immediately presented at the switches and the switches see the respective WWPN's as active. At that point all 4 WWPN's of the guest are active according to my switches. The switches also recognize these WWPN's as 'NPIV' WWPN's;
  • When I stop the guest, and manually switch the addresses of set A and B over and start again, I see all my storage. This again to make sure zoning is ok and all storage is available on all 4 WWPN's;

Now the point of interest: The MSA2040 seems to be rather slow to recognize or 'discover' as HP calls it presented WWPN's. This is the same for physical hosts as well as virtual hosts. Sometimes it takes up to a minute or two before a host is actually discovered by the SAN. Then it presents the configured LUNs to it and that step again takes a while. I think this is the base issue here. When I do a live migration all 4 WWPN's are available but the storage only discovered 2 of them. At the sporadic times Live Migration DOES work, the SAN (ofcourse) discovered the WWPN's and as soon as the LUN's are presented to them, the migration immediately continues as expected.

The same happens when starting a guest with Synthetic Fibre Channel Adapters: Starting such VM immediately presents the WWPN's at switchlevel, then 'stalls' at 10% for about a minute and then continues booting. Sometimes the SAN discovers the WWPN's faster, and as soon as the LUN's are presented the booting continues and everything is ok. However most of the times the SAN is 'too slow' and after a timeout of a minute or so the VM continues booting. This results in the storage not being available in this guest until the SAN discovered the WWPN's.

The same happens with Quick Migration. With Quick Migration there is no requirement for the LUN's to be active and therefore it works. And again when the SAN is quick enough the storage is there immediately when the migration is done, when it's too slow the storage is not available after migration, until the SAN discovered the WWPN's again.

With Live Migration ofcourse there is a requirement that the LUNs are available to all 4 ports at time of migration. Unlike a quick-migration, Live Mgration will not continue when LUN's aren't available.

So I have 2 options here that I think would fix my issue:

  • Have the SAN to pickup new presented hosts faster;
  • Have Hyper-V to wait longer before a live migration times out.

The first is not an option, HP does not have any settings for this in the MSA2040 (and neither in the P2000 G3 which we have as backup as well in this setup).

So maybe we can increase the Hyper-V live-migration-wait-for-lun-timeout?

The concrete question:

Is there a regkey or something for increasing the 'waiting for storage' timeout on live-migration?

Ofcourse any other 'magical' solution to this issue is welcome :)

Slow down the network

Hi Everyone,

It's been 2 days since remote users are unable to work remotely on the server as they used to. In fact, my compagny has 4 differents location in town. Each location has a physical server with Hyper-V Manager installed on it, and the servers are running Win Server 2008 r2.

On the location that the Remote Desktop Server is based I realized that when various win 7 clients are connected remotely, it is almost impossible for anybody to work.

As I tried to troubleshoot the problem, I noticed that when I shutdown the virtual Server that is holding AD, DNS and DHCP everything come back to normally and when I restart it the network goes down once again.

Please I really need help, I am very desprate. Thanks in advance for all your support.

Best Regards

VLANs to a VSWITCH

Hi

the link here Hyper-v Config seems to indicate the creation of 1 virtual switch but has multiple virtual LANs attached to it.

firstly, is this correct how I am understanding it?

secondly, I take it there is no way to do this in the GUI since I can't find it, is command line the only way to do this (not that I mind that at all)?

thanks

Steve

hello guys

now we have win2k8 r2 with installed hyper-v role.

we had a network adapter with 4 ports and these 4 NICs was installed before adding hyper-v role so we select the these 4 NICs when installing the hyper-v role as usual.

after that, we add other new network adapter with 4 NICs.

the problem that we can't see the new 4 NICs in hyper-v manager to create external connection.

any suggestions ??

Expanding Unbuntu Linux Disk Space

Hello,

I was expanding a Linux guest operating system today from 30GB to 50GB. After expanding the disk I started the guest operating system and noticed  a lot of data missing. Can someone explain why I may have lost this data and if I could recover it...

A few things to note that I did have a previous snapshot when I did expand the disk

Also

I now see two files a .vhd at 50GB and another with the file type of .avhd at 30GB

I have suspect that the .avhd may have my missing data as some simple searching states this is a snapshot ...is there a way to revert back to this or get the data within .avhd to be within the 50GB .vhd file??? Apologies if this sounds confusing.

Cisco Unified Communication Manager (CUCM)

I have found only a single document describing a successful install (hacked) of CUCM (v 8 or 9) on Windows Hyper-V.

We are all installing VMware or running an ESXI server.

There are no issues installing Red Hat on Hyper-V, right?

I don't get it.

CME is installed directly on a router. CUCM is standalone. I cannot find an answer from Cisco. Everyone says it cannot be done, except in that one article. Ultimately, it does not matter, but why the extra step installing VMware?

Networking considerations for new Hyper-V host

$

Helllo all.

We have recently upgraded one of our IBM Bladecenters to use 10g switch modules in the bladecenter connected to a Juniper 4550 10g switch on our LAN.

I am trying to build a new Hyper-V 2012 R2 host server utilizing the extra bandwidth, but im not sure exactly which way I should proceed. This host will ultimately be part of a cluster with several other hosts. I have 2 scenarios:

scenario 1:

I end up having a total of 8 "physical" NIC's in the OS thanks to the IBM virtual fabric

2x 5gb nics (used with MPIO for ISCSI to SAN for CSV)

4x 2.5 gb nics

2x 1gb nics (one is for a DMZ network connection, the other can possibly be used for Hyper-V management network)

Ideally I want to have the 2.5 gb nics teamed so I have redundancy, however, im not sure exactly what Hyper-V traffic I would route over each network team. Currently in our other hosts that are running 1g nics/teams we have big problems with ISCSI, VM traffic and Live migrations (guests time out during a live migration) bottlenecks so im trying to remedy that with the additional bandwidth and dedicating networks.

Scenario 2: 5 Nic's

2x 5g nic (iscsi for CSV)

1x 10g nic

2x 1g nic (management and DMZ)

In this scenario I guess I could use the 1 10g nic and carve it up in Hyper-v using VLAN's and QoS to achieve the same goal. I'm curious if there would be any benefits to doing it this way other then being able to carve it up using the vnics etc. We have never implemented Hyper-V in this fashion so I haven't seen it in a real world setting.

I know there is a million other factors to take into consideration, but im trying to get a picture on a high level of what others might do in a similar situation. I can find recommendations from MS and TechNet etc on the networks and what should have its own dedicated network etc, but another question I have that could help me is out of the Hyper-V networks (Vm, livemig, management, csv, heartbeat etc.) which networks would you dedicate the most bandwidth to? which would you absolutely have as its own network and which do you feel are safe to combine?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

VMQ Connection Policy in on Cisco UCS Enviornment

$

Hello,

I have built a Windows 2012R2 Hyper-V cluster on Cisco  B200M3's 2.21d firmware VIC 1240. I was unable to get the OS to enable VMQ on the NIC's that I presented to Hyper-V for VM networking. I finally found that I needed to create a  VMQ Connection policy and assign that policy to the NIC's at the hardware level that I wanted to use VMQ on. In this policy there are two settings required 1) Number of VMQ's and 2) Number of Interrupts. This is where my question comes in, how do I figure out what values to use here?

So I opened a support ticket and was given the following:

  • The number of interrupts value is calculated by - the total number of CPU threads that the server has
  • The number is VMQ’s is calculated by  The Number of VMQs = Number of Synthetic NICs (VM NICs) + 1) - this was clarified again later as the number of NIC's on the VM's that are present on the host. So if I have 25 vm's 1 NIC each my value should be 25.

The Interrupts makes sense however the VMQ's does not. I have a cluster and VM's are migrated back and forth between nodes for obvious reasons and we also add and remove VM's on a regular basis. I can obviously change the number of VMQ's to match when changes are made but seems very unreasonable to me.

So that all said, does anyone else have feedback on these settings?

Windows 2012 Hyper-V Replica and DCs - Two-Way replication - Vice-Versa replica

I have 2 Hosts, Dell PowerEdge Servers, each one running a Windows 2012 R2 standard OS

Each Host have a single VM, running Windows 2012 Rs standard OS, each one with: DC/AD+DHCP Failover+WINS+DNS+WSUS+ArcServe Agent for Backup

AND IF...

Can I create a hyper-V replica, using the following architecture:

Physical Host1 with 1 VM, replicating the single AD/DC VM to the Physical Host2

and vice versa:

Physical Host2 with 1 VM, replicating the single AD/DC VM to the Physical Host1

It will be a bad idea do a "cross-replica"?

How can i avoid at 100%, the chances in running the same DC instance, twice, in planned and unplanned faiolvers?

The WIn2012R2 have all protection mecanisms to avoid this? And if happend, what do i do?
