Hyper-V Guest - RDP Connections cause high latency.

Hi all,

In a test environment we have a HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 server with Windows Server 2012 R2 - Standard installed with the Hyper-V Role and no others.
On the server there is a Switch Independent network team configured with 2 of the 1GB NICs.
There is a virtual Swtich (External) configured on the Host linked to the Team with allow management selected.
The Guest VM has a single NIC (not a legacy setup) connected to the virtual Switch

The issue we are having is that once an RDP session is connected to a Guest OS, for example another 2012 R2 Server, it experiences high latency (which makes the RDP session appear to run in a very jerky way)

Using Hyper-V VMConnect, the server has no issues at all although the window is smaller.

We can verify this is being caused by an RDP session by observing ping times:

This issue does not affect RDP sessions to the Host.

I have seen posts about disabling VMQ on the host/guest servers as there may be an issue with this model - this has had no effect at all, the issue persists after changing VMQ and restarting both the guest and the host OS.

I have seen another fix for a similar issue by running these commands: bcdedit.exe /set USEPLATFORMCLOCK on and this also has not resolved the issue.

I have also set the Guest VM to use 256Mbps minimum (512maximum - also tried with no maximum) bandwidth allocated, but again this does not resolve the issue.

There are no backup jobs or reporting jobs running on these servers (they are in test).

Is this caused by the specific hardware we have chosen or is there further diagnostics that can be performed? Any help would be appreciated.

Set up "Virtual Routing" Windows Server 2012R2

Hi,

I currently have a Windows Server 2012r2 HyperV host, within which I would like to set up multiple networks for the purpose of testing the following subjects for my studies;

-VPN/Routing and Remote Access

-Network Policy Server

-Direct Access

Can somebody please explain how to configure a virtual device for carrying out the routing within a single physical host?

The Host is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 and has two physical NICS

PVLANs External Access

Hi,

I have some VM's configured with different PVLAN's in different modes (I,C,P). Should I be able to talk to the outside world from the VM's?

Does the switch connecting my Host Server to my router need to be configured in way such as VLAN Trunk?

Kind regards

Tom

2012 r2 file backup causes all VMs to go in to "backing up"

I'm using windows server backup on server 20012 r2, just doing a file backup of the hyper v VMs.  When I do this, all of the child VMs go in to a "backing up" state for the entire backup.  I'm still able to connect to each VM but they run so slowly they're unusable.  I have it set to do incremental backups, but sometimes it will still take hours to back up, which causes the child VMs to be basically locked up for hours.  Is there any way to set it to only back up one VM at a time rather than lock them all up throughout the backup process?

Are there any integrated O/S Hyper-V Server 2012 backup routines to backup the Hyper-V Server 2012?

vm-resourcemetering

when I try to get the vm details using GET-VM <vmname>cmdlet I get the attached error. what could be the issue ?

but when I give just >get-vm I get all the vm's running on the host.

I have few queries : where does the collected log files of vm-resourcemetering get stored ? Default window is every 1hour for collecting the data, how to increase it ?

without enabling resource metering can we get the vm usage details with just "measure-vm"  cmdlet  ?

Command : > measure-VM -VMName <vmname>

<vmname> : what should be the name here .. whether it's the computer name or the name displayed on the hyper-v manager ?

Thanks

New Windows server 2003 Hyper-V guest fails to boot

Hello,

I'm currently doing some virtualization experiments on my new server hardware. The host hardware is:

IBM x3650 M4

x2 Xeon E5-2609

32GB RAM

x2 480 GB SSDs

Server OS: Windows server 2012

I'd like to test some legacy app virtualization. I've configured a VM and have installed Windows server 2003. The install is done via DVD. The issue at hand is that after the initial installation, the server fails to boot. The VM goes into a reboot loop and so far the only error logging I'm able to find is in the hosts event log.

If its relevant, the host is not yet activated license wise. I downloaded the demo version so I could test my idea before making a purchase to go ahead with full implementation.

As it stands right now I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. Many searches on google have not turned up any helpful info. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

RAID Array Configuration for Hyper-V Host with SQL Server VM and Remote Destop Session Host VM (Windows Server 2012 R2)

$

I am building a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host that will house (2) Virtual Machines running Windows Server 2012 R2 for a SMB.  The server has a LSI PIKE 2208 RAID Controller and (8) 600GB 15K SAS drives that I plan on placing in a RAID 10 array providing my 2.4TB of storage.  The software vendor has provided me the following specifications to guide my decisions in setting up storage:

SQL Server (15K Drives):

RAID Channel 1 (320GB x 2) - RAID 1 - (C) OS + SQL Server App - (D) SQL Server Log Files
RAID Channel 2 (500GB x 3) - RAID 5 - (E) SQL Server Data Files

RDS Server (10K Drives):

RAID Channel 1 (500GB x 2) - RAID 1 - (C) OS + Application Files

I am considering using the RAID controller to setup a smallish Virtual Drive for the Hyper-V host.  This will allow me to keep the host operating system on a Virtual Drive separate from the VMs VHDXs and configuration files.  However, this can be done using by creating volumes in Windows as well.

I don't know if I should create separate Virtual Drives using the RAID controller for the different VMs, then place the respective VHDXs and configuration files on those drives <OR> create one big Virtual Drive for everything and use Windows volumes to separate things.  Here are the three configurations rolling around in my head:

Configuration 1:

  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 1
  • - 150GB (Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host Operating System)
  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 2 (VM1 - SQL Server)
  • - 320GB (Houses the VHDX and CF for (C) OS + SQL Server App - (D) SQL Server Log Files)
  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 3 (VM1 - SQL Server)
  • - 1TB (Houses the VHDX for (E) SQL Server Data Files)
  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 4 (VM2 - RDS Server)
  • - 500GB (Houses the VHDX and CF for (C) OS + Application Files)

Configuration 2:

  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 1
  • - 150GB (Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host Operating System)
  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 2
  • - 2TB (Houses all of the VHDXs and CF for all of the VMs)

Configuraton 3:

  • RAID Controller Virtual Drive 1
  • - 2.4TB
  • - Use Windows tools to create a partition for the host.
  • - Use Windows tools to create a partition to house all VM VHDXs and CFs.

Is there any benefit to separating the Virtual Drives at the controller level?  Is there another approach that makes more sense?

Thank you all very much for your input.  I sincerely appreciate it!

Hi,

Hyper-V single node with Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter - the VM had its Integrated Services update and rebooted properly. After that, Windows 2008 start and shows BSOD as listed below - safe mode doesn't work. Any tips?

Planed failover stuck on "fail over to replica server"

i have 2 Windows server standard 2012 with hyper-v role installed. Both are domain members.

i have several VM in server2. I configured replication with kerberos authentication on 2 virtual machines to replica server1. the status of replication its ok. Then i want to test the planned failover feature. I shutdown the VM and trigger the "planned failover" but it get stuck on "fail over to replica server" action for about 1 hr until i cancelled it. I try it with the other VM with same results.

Event viewer say nothing about errors on aplication, system and the different hyper-v event logs.

what could be the problem on this situattion ¿?

thanks

All the virtual machine are showing 95% of Memory usage

Hi team,

We are having 2 Virtual machines in Hyper-V, they are allocated memory respectively 20 gb & 4 gb. Both system showing 95% usage in the task manager, but when we individually check the memory used by all process it about 30 - 40%.

When we re-start the VM, immediately it taking 93%. even before all the process or services start running on this system.

Setup private cloud on iSCSI or CSV

Hello! If somebody could help me with a couple of questions in making a best choice for constructing a private cloud?

First of all, let me describe our setup:

I have 2 x node IBM System X 3550 M4 servers

and directly attached via fiber to them IBM V3700 storage (no fiber switch).

The software we have is a bunch of Windows Server 2012 Standard licenses.

Now what i want is to create a proper private cloud from all of this. With the guest cluster of VMs, on which i need to put a workload like SQL server, file server, and some proprietary services. After making a bunch of tests, i encountered a couple of problems so if you could advice on them it would be very nice:

1) As far as i understand, if i do use Server 2012 for VM hosting nodes, i could put only the VMs system drives on CSV volume (for seamless live migration) and for the guest cluster shared storage i'm stuck with iSCSI, am i right? Due to not having fiber switch i can't create virtual fibre adapter, and i can't use CSV for this as that ability appeared only in Server 2012 R2.

So the question is, is there some performance tricks and tips for that scenario? Because in VM's i have sort ofpoor IO perfomance - about 30/40MBps for writing single large file. On the hosting machine, for example, it would be about 150MBps for same scenario.

2) Would it be a good solution to use free Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 as the node hypervisor and use all mine Server 2012 licenses for VMs? As far as i understand then i could use CSV for guest cluster shared storage and the perfomance would be much nicer? What bad consequences could be to this choice?

3) The strange little quirk: when i setup host operation system, be it 2012 Server or 2012 R2 Hyper-v Server, i have avery, very long response frombcdedit. It's like 30 seconds or even more to enum the bcd store - and its a clean new installation. I'm in fear that it's a symptom of some deep configuration problem. How can i troubleshoot this issue? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

data corruption on logical drive and backup error and creating new VHD

$

I got na error on ArcServe 16.5 SP1 + Patches

The backup job had erros: AW0553   e  AE11007

AW0553   07/07/2014 10:24:03    530      3        Unable to create sub-session metadata for the volume E:.

AE11007  07/07/2014 10:24:03    530      3         There is an invalid index allocation header signature.

The CA support suggested an error in drive "E:", data corruption, etc

The VM (with the "E:" drive) chkdsk showed no errors on drive "E:" and no errors were found on system logs, disk errors and the physical machine have no errors too.

I´m trying to "predict" the next step for CA support and i´m thinking about in trying to create a new VHD file and what options do I have.

it will be useful to do a copy/paste and create a duplicated VHD fie? (and maybe "duplicating" the problem in the new VHD file?)

There are disk operations in Hyper-V (powershell or GUI) to create a new "fresh" VHD, to replace the "suspect" VHD?

It will be useful to create a new VHD using the EDIT disk option in the GUI? The idea is to create a new VHD based on a existing VHD, identical, but without the risks in "duplicating" the problem?

Live Migration - Failed to establish a connection because of an unsupported protocol version (protocol version 5.0)

I'm getting a not the disk and everything) back to the host I originally had it on.  Here is my setup:

Host 1 - Microsoft Storage Server 2012 Standard (NAS)

Host 2 - Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 (All connected virtual hard drives use the SMB 3.0 protocol to connect to the NAS - Host 1)

Delegation is setup on both of these hosts to include:

-Trust this computer, Use Kerberos only, Services - cifs, Hyper-V Replication, Microsoft Virtual Console Service, Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service

Live Migration is setup on both of these hosts to include:

-Enable incoming and outgoing live migrations using Kerberos

-Use any available network for live migration

I was able to migrate the VM from host 1 to host 2 with no problems.  But when I try to migrate the VM host 1 that's when I encounter the error.

I saw a KB article similar to the issue I'm having but it only effects Server 2008 R2 (KB2705759)

I've rebooted both hosts but still get the error.  The VM that is on host 2 has it's hard drive on host 1 run's fine so there are no connection issues there.

I've searched the Internet for this issue and keep coming up empty handed.  I even named the virtual switch on both hosts the same to see if that would work.  Please help!  I'd rather not do an export and import of the VM because I'm evaluating this product so I want to make sure it works before I put it into production.

Install OS on VM over Windows Server Core

Hello there.

I'm starting to deploy a virtualization environment based on a server core installation of windows server 2012 R2.

But, I just faced the following doubt: Is there some way to install an OS on a VM at that environment without use the Remote Hyper-V Manager?

It's important to say that I've already installed the Hyper-V role and created the VM on the quoted server.

I thanks in advance.

Lucas Gustavo.

Trouble to remote access Hyper-V

Hi there.

I have a Windows Server Core 2012 R2 running the Hyper-V role, on which I have some VMs.

I connect to the server by the Hyper-V Manager from my desktop with success.

But, it has a little time that I've lost the connection, and the Hyper-V Manager only says to me: "The operation on the computer HOST01 failed", where HOST01 is the name of my server. Depite this situation, I'm still being able to accomplish others remote operations on the server.

Can anyone help to solve this trouble?

I thank so much in advance.

Lucas Gustavo.

ParentAdapter      : Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.VMNetworkAdapter

Direction          : Inbound

Action             : Deny

LocalIPAddress     : ANY

RemoteIPAddress    : ANY

LocalPort          : 3389

RemotePort         : ANY

Hyper-V Host 3 NICs Teamed for VMs - VMs No Internet Access

Hello, I have a Hyper-V host that has 4 physical NICs, 1 NIC is dedicated to the host and I teamed 3 NICs with the Windows 2012 R2 Teaming option. I connected the 3 NICs to my PowerConnect 2848 (No VLAN or Any other configurations) and booted up my VM and can access the firewall GUI.  If I disconnect 2 of the cables from the server (teamed NICs) I get internet access.  I have not change any of the settings in the Hyper-V manager for the network connection or for the network adapter in the VM. What am I missing and why is it not working when all 3 network cables are connected.  Thanks Ryan.
