I have recovered the contents of the primary drive from a dead 2012 R2 server from its SCSI RAID array to an IDE storage volume on a new 2012 R2 server Hyper-V. As it was the only domain controller, I am looking for way to restore it with Active Directory so I can regain access to other servers in that domain. I am thinking that Hyper-V might be an approach with it's ability to access physical drives.
Using Hyper-V, I created a new VM and attached the storage volume as its primary drive. I can't get past a "Boot Failure. Reboot and select a proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device." message after the Hyper-V logo. If I insert a installation disk in the CD/DVD drive, it will boot from there and from the console I have access to the volume; so it has access.
From the console I have used Bootrec's FixBoot and FixMbr successfully but RebuildBcd fails with a "Requested system device not found" message, for which I haven't found how to determine what device is being sought.
So I have used the Bootsect utility to try and replace the bootsect, which it says is successful for the "C:" drive, but fails for a "\Device\HarddiskVolume1" (which doesn't exist as far as I know) saying it "Couldn't open the volume root directory. The parameter is incorrect." However it does indicate the "Bootcode was successfully update on at least one volume."
Still the VM fails to boot from drive "C:
Finally, if I try an use BcdBoot I get a "BFSVC Error: Failed to get system partition! Last error =0x03bc3 Failure when attempting to copy boot files."
Ideas? Suggestions? Is there a published procedure for this scenario?
TIA, Marc
