Export/Import of virtual DC's

Hi All

I hope someone can provide some advice and their opinions on the scenario below. I apologize that this is a long post and I realize that my requirement is far from perfect but I need to try and accomplish this with the minimum of problems.

  • I currently have a 2 host (Hyper-V 2016), non clustered environment, with 3 VM's running on each host (inc 1 virtual DC on each host). All VM's are Server 2016. Each host is domain joined.
  • In order to allow for some integration with a partner, I need to make the domain available at the partners premises. (different country) My plan is to export the 2 DC's and import them onto a temporary host server (Hyper-V 2016) they are providing. The integration is really just joining some of their servers to our domain.
  • The plan would then be to export the DC's from the partners hardware and re-import back into my environment. Obviously I would ensure that the original DC's are powered off before the import (and subsequently deleted) and no changes would be made on the DC's from which the original exports were taken while the integration takes place.

I guess my main questions on this are:

  1. Will exporting/importing the DC's from/to different host servers(which will be different hardware) and back again cause problems? I appreciate if the temporary host is joined to the domain then a computer account for this will exist in AD which I can tidy up.
  2. Would this have any effect on the other 4 member servers that continued to use the DC's from which the original exports were taken?

I understand that this has the potential to cause some headaches along the way, however I would be grateful of any particular issues anyone could point out where I might pay particular attention, or even a better alternative method.

Thanks in advance.

Mathew
