The virtual machine could not start because the hypervisor is not running

Hi All

I have a server with an Intel Server Board and Xeon processor. The server was running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. I have done an In Place upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 Std and removed the Essentials feature.

I installed Hyper-V and created a virtual machine but when I want to start the machine I keep getting an error saying the hypervisor is not enabled. Prior to installing the Hyper-V roll I had to do a firmware update on the Bios because even with Intel VT enabled and Data Execution prevention enabled Windows kept telling me it could not install the roll because virtualisation was not enabled in the BIOS. After updating the firmware and making sure everything was enabled I went into System Information and checked that the VT was enabled.

Hyper-V - VM Monitor Mode Extensions Yes
Hyper-V - Second Level Address Translation Extensions Yes
Hyper-V - Virtualization Enabled in Firmware Yes
Hyper-V - Data Execution Protection Yes

After making sure they all said yes I installed the Hyper-V role without any issues. After creating the VM I tried to turn it on and then got the error saying that the machine could not start because the Hypervisor is not running.

I have tired

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype Auto

and restarted the server. And still got the error. I restarted the server and went back into the BIOS and made sure everything that needed to be enabled still was. I shut down the server completely and started it up again. I deleted the VM and completely uninstalled the Hyper-V role, restarted the server, installed the role again, restarted the server but still get the same error.

What else can I try?
