i am trying to set up a home Server 2008 R2 lab with Hyper V so I can work my MCTS lab assignments and always run into the same problem. I have to set a static IP for the server hosting the DHCP and DNS services within Active Directory. However,
my router already has DHCP enabled which means I cannot set up DHCP on my lab server and then create VMs to simulate a network and ping connectivity. I've disabled DHCP on my router but that doesn't change the fact that I cant find the right default
gateway/static address/DNS address combination to be able to go forward. In class my instructor simply says to "choose any ip address you want" and I have to fend for myself. I tried going by the book and setting the first server to 192.168.100.1xx
(where xx is supposed to be 1 of up to 50 numbers representing individual students in the class). The books states to use 192.168.100.250 for the default gateway and then has (or whatever your network requires) which needs clarification. Then they
want the preferred DNS server to be 192.168.100.200 which also doesn't work. So yeah, if you are as confused as I am by now I can move on to the next bit. I went to the Network connections page and have 3 items. The hardwired router, the
virtual LAN connection, and my NIC. I am confused as to what to set my VMs to. Do they need to be internal connections or External? What is the default gateway? Is it my router which is 192.168.0.1? Is that what i set my main
server to that the others VMs feed off of? Is that the preferred DNS server setting as well?
