Access VPN from virtual machine

I have a small domain with a DC/DNS server and a couple of connected clients. The DC is a virtual machine on a server running 2012 r2 hyper-v. The hyper-v server has 4 NIC. So far I have only used 2. NIC 1 has a fixed IP and NIC 2 has a dynamic IP.

In addition I have a couple of virtual machines that aren't part of the domain. I have two virtual switches one for each NIC.

On the one virtual machine I connect to a VPN, but it appears that I never fully connect even though the VPN client suggest that I am connected. When I run a ping command against one of the machines on the remote network, the hostname resolves to an external IP. However, when I do the same thing from a physical machine not on the domain the hostname resolves to an internal IP.

I don't understand what happens when trying to connect from my virtual machine, am I hitting a domain firewall on the way out since the NIC is on the 2012 virtual server that is part of my domain?

Thanks,

Chris
