Re-enabling replication fails

I am testing 2012R2 replication with extended replication to a remote DR facility to see what the process is to restart replication if there are changes to the vhd configuration on the primary server, without having to destroy the replicas and replicate the whole vm again. I've read blogs about removing replication on primary & replica, adding the vhd to both and then re-enabling replication, but I cannot get this to work in my envionment.

Even in the most simpliest scenario re-enabling replication fails:-

Stop replication of a vm in both the primary and replica servers.

Start the replication wizard on the primary and select use an existing vm on the replica server as the initial copy.

Error: The virtual disks for the replica vm are not present on the replica server.
