Hyper-V Replication Failing - Initial Replication could not be started (cannot find the file specified ID 0x80070002)

Hello,

I have a problem with VM replication. We have two Hyper-V 2012 R2 (fully patched) hosts (let's call them HV1 and HV2) with different VMs on each. There is one VM on HV1 (call it VM1) and two VMs on HV2 (call them VM2 and VM3). Each host is set to replicate VMs to the internal backup drive on the other host. The VMs on HV2 are replicating to HV1 perfectly. VM1 on HV1 is not replicating to HV2 correctly. I traced its errors to a full drive on HV2 - it appears there were two incomplete copies of VM1. Assuming I could just purge the incomplete files I removed the replication configuration from VM1 and simply deleted the contents of the "Hyper-V Replica" folder on HV2. I then recreated replication of VM1 from scratch and pointed it to HV2, but now it immediately fails with the following error:

Initial replication could not be started

Replication was enabled successfully. However, initial replication could not be started. Correct the error and try again. You can also choose an alternative mode for initial replication and try again.

Hyper-V failed to start replication for virtual machine.

Replication operation for virtual machine 'VM1' failed. (Virtual machine ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX)

Hyper-V failed to start replication for virtual machine 'VM1': The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002). Virtual machine ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX)

Replication operation for virtual machine 'VM1' failed: the system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002). (Virtual machine ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX) (Primary server: 'HV1.mydomain.com', Replica server: 'HV2.mydomain.com')

Now I'm assuming there are some expected links to the original replica that were lost when I deleted the original replica folders and their contents. What I'd like to know is, how can I remove all references to these links and 'reset' the VM as though it has never had replication enabled and start from scratch?

Thanks for your time,

Trevor
